US News & World Reports ranks graduate ed schools in "Curriculum and Instruction."These folks ("TheBestSchools...") rank all kinds of programs, supposedly objectively, though the methodology is unclear: The 25 Best Online Master in Educational Technology Degree Programs.Western Governors has an interesting competency-based model: Master of Education. A friend of a friend says it's a very good experience.Of course, you don't need a degree to do professional work in the area. I would recommend a few good courses in instructional design, the science of learning, perhaps program evaluation, plus some strong work experience.

The only really dark fact about Khan academy that I know of is actually a dark fact about all educational programs. The is no absolute way to evaluate them fairly. And this is because there is not a exact outcome in education.If I want to teach a person to add two numbers, that seems pretty easy to evaluate right? Can they get the proper result every time. But it is not that simple. People make mistakes, so maybe we set a criteria like they have to be correct in 9 out of 10 addition problems. But not all addition problems are the same. Adding 3+5 is not the same problem as adding 50089.4598 + 647.0000098, nor is adding 5/7 to 2/3. Do you have to be able to do all three problems to have mastered addition? What is the reasonable standard? And is the reasonable standard the same for all people? Also, I can look at the final problem and say to myself 5/7 is pretty close to 2/3 so the answer will be close to 4/3 and that is good enough. Other people will have to convert it to 15/21 and 14/21 to get an answer of 1 and 8/21 and have no real idea of what that means. So, is my answer which is close and concrete correct, or the other answer which is more exact, yet less concrete more correct? Do I need both answers, one of the two, or should we exclude problems like that?It gets even more difficult in other subjects where the correctness may be more subjective. Just as the correctness of answers are somewhat subjective, so are the results of educational programs somewhat subjective. Our best solution is to have several programs available and if a student seems to be making reasonable progress keep them in it, and if they don’t seem to be making reasonable progress try a different program. With the understanding that reasonable progress may differ for different people.
