PDF Editor FAQ

Is it possible for you to earn so much scholarship money that the school ends up giving you the money?

In the US, one may receive scholarships from all sources up to a maximum of the Cost of Attendance of the institution. Keep in mind that after your direct charges on one's student account are satisfied, the remainder is to be refunded to the student conditionally to satisfying certain requirements. Generally the direct charges are tuition and fees; residence hall and meal plan( if either or both are applicable). Some universities may permit a student to use part of an anticipated refund for a book voucher, but there are several very real expenses that the refund is designed to address. With presentation to the Office of Financial Aid the scholarships may have their enrollment verification satisfied while counting towards payment of student account charges instead of a reimbursement after one has paid the entire bill and been validated for the semester. This permits the acceptance and Master Promissory Note to cover these funds and permit automatic disbursement against the current semester charges.Enrolled as a full time student, before one starts to figure out how to spend a sizable windfall, one must carefully peruse the aid policies of the institution. Essentially when an aid package is offered by any university it will be packaged to meet the Cost of Attendance, but will probably be loan intensive. The Estimated Family Contribution(EFC) determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) is the benchmark that the school attempts to meet; in reality after Federal loans, Pell Grant and Work Study are applied, the remainder may be loan intensive or contain an institutional award. Extensive external to the University scholarships may reduce or remove institutional scholarships from one's aid package. One generally has a stronger case to retain scholarship funds that are under renewable contract, but read carefully and always keep a copy for your records. In conclusion, any aid applied to one's account in excess of student account charges is subject to refund based on the conditions of the award. Scholarships for specific items are not converted to a dollar amount if previously satisfied (i.e. a tuition scholarship from the University and a tuition scholarship from a private donor will not both posted to one's account if the private donor scholarship specifies tuition only instead of enrollment expenses generally). The last hurdle in the US is that income received in excess of tuition and fees or items required and mandated by one's institution is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This income WILL affect the following year's tax return and FAFSA, possibly raising the EFC. I have personally seen needy students lose their Pell Grant amd matching institutional award by watching the EFC rise from $0 to $20. I hope this helps and that you are safe and healthy. Good luck!

Have there been any cases where people would go to university to cash in scholarships/grant refunds and then choose to drop out and keep the money?

I’m sure it was possible in the past, which is why they now have academic and attendance verification rules. In the 1970s, my brother got a scholarship check sent directly to him in grad school. He used it to buy a boat. It wasn’t federal money, though.Back then, you didn’t get an end of year tax document reflecting scholarships because scholarship money wasn’t taxable as income. I don’t think the IRS ever got wind that students received scholarship money. So back in the day scholarship money was better than gambling winnings.
