PDF Editor FAQ

When you were a college student, what were some ways that you made quick cash, and how did you save money?

Making money--I used to sign up to be a guinea-pig for psychology studies. My alma mater, Illinois, had/has a very large Psychology program, and it seems like some professor or grad student was always recruiting undergrads. The Department had a big emphasis on studying learning/memory/cognition, and most of the studies were one-shot deals where you would look at a picture for 5 minutes, then answer questions about details within the picture. It usually took about a 1/2 hour and paid $5 in early 80s money, which would be about $12.50 today. Two of my roommates used to get up at 5:00 am on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings and go collect cans in the Campustown area adjacent to the University of Illinois campus.Saving money: My roommates and I agreed not to run the heat in our apartment during the first semester. Champaign, Illinois can get pretty cold in December. I spent a lot of time studying at the Main Library, and at the student union (open 24 hours--and heated). There was an IHOP that was two blocks from my apartment (on Green Street near the intersection with 4th Street, for any Illini reading this. Long since torn down). They had a special on Tuesday and Thursday each week--all-you-can eat pancakes for $1.00. An unlimited pot of coffee was $1.00. And, by agreement, each of us had to tip the waitress $1.00, because one of my roommates was trying to work up the nerve to ask her out (he never did). My roommates and I ate there about once a week.Cheap food could also be had in the cafeteria in the Home Economics Building, and at the Student Union (which then had a proprietary cafeteria, rather than the generic food court that is there now(.
