Mythological religious belief.Every religion is founded on a lot of mythological stories with different levels of significance. This is just one of those stories, and there is no evidence that it happened.But many Muslims refuse to stop at treating it as an article of faith and want to claim scientific evidence to prove that Islam is the true religion.The most hilarious attempt at hijacking scientific validity came after NASA images showing some rifts on the lunar surface came out[1]OMG evidence that the moon has been split in two!Not.This is just Rima Ariadaeus,[2] one of the many Rimae[3] (channel-like long depressions) on the lunar surface. It is only 300km long and is in no way evidence of the moon being split in two. To top it all, these features are billions of years old![4] Not going to claim that it formed from a 1400-year old miracle now, are you?But many Muslim websites kept promoting the claim and I have even had the misfortune of being at the receiving end of such a share. NASA scientist Brad Bailey had a good to-the-point response to such claims:[5]My recommendation is to not believe everything you read on the internet. Peer-reviewed papers are the only scientifically valid sources of information out there. No current scientific evidence reports that the Moon was split into two (or more) parts and then reassembled at any point in the past.Wikipedia also talks about it in the context of the religious belief.[6]There is also a lot of local folklore about people who supposedly saw the event (and converted to Islam), developed long after their lives. For example, in Kerala where I come from, the folklore is that the first Muslim convert was a king who saw the miracle.[7] But there is no historical evidence for such claims, and the many civilizations around the world who were advanced in observational astronomy made no record of such a monumental event either. Everything puts this in the realm of religious mythology.I hope that religious people everywhere would learn to keep science separate from religion. You can keep your religious beliefs and harmless practices, but please stop using pseudoscience to justify them. I used to ask the same question myself. Was amazed that some academics could publish 10 or more papers in a year, and that some professors manage to do that and in some of the toughest-to-get-in, high-impact, top-tier journals.I soon realised that my aim of getting at least one journal paper published annually, was just not going to cut it in this age and era. Talking to a few well published professors, looking at how they worked and analysing their papers, I learnt a lot.Yes, you do have to work hard. We are constantly reading, reviewing, discussing and thinking of research ideas. And you keep on writing and writing and submitting. Last year, I submitted more than 20 papers to various journals. Many were desk rejected by the editors, others were rejected by the reviewers, a few went through to the next review rounds. Now this year, I am seeing the fruits of my hard work as I have had several papers published and others accepted for publication.However, besides working hard, you have to work smart as well. I soon realised that a lot of papers by the top professors are with their students, also a number are in association with other academics. You simply cannot do it alone and highlights the importance of having good students researching under you and networking. The idea of the lonely professor working alone in his room does not work anymore.I also joined the editorial teams of a few journals and am reviewer to several top ranking journals. Reading and reviewing papers of other academics have actually helped me to improve my own submissions and I can see that my success rates are improving over time.Of course there are several criticisms - that we have become paper churning machines, that we are neglecting teaching and learning, and long-term research are often rejected for less impact short-term research. A lot of academics are suffering from stress and depression because of the requirement to constantly publish not just any paper but papers in “high ranking journals”. Tenureships, increments, promotions all depend on the number of good publications. In fact, in academia, it is our currency. This is an active area of research. I’ve looked into some of it, and all I can say is that it’s a very complicated issue. People who have psychiatric disorders — including schizophrenia and depression — often have altered brain rhythms such as alpha, beta and gamma waves, but studies are somewhat inconsistent about the direction of the effects. I would recommend looking for review papers on PubMed or Google Scholar.
