How does double elimination tournaments work?

You can have any number of entries in a double elimination tournament. The only limitation is the length of time it takes to play your tournament.I assume you are seeing pre-made brackets in the sizes mentioned. The reason for the jump is that is the most economical way of making those brackets without being redundant. If you want to have a 20 team tournament use the 2r team bracket and assuming it has “seeds” then team's 21-24 are byes and whomever is supposed to play that team is awarded a win without actually playing a game. If you have 31 then use the 32 team bracket and have 1 bye, if it is 36 use the 48 team bracket with 12 byes.

Do you think Iceland can win Euro 2016?

I WISH, I WISH!!!I am a supporter of Germany, but it would be OK for me if Iceland beat Germany. They’ve been my favorite team in this tournament. It will break my heart, if they lose. Cristiano Ronaldo (I’m a fan of him, too) can say whatever he wants, but Iceland is better than Portugal. They know how to defend (Portugal almost conceded 4 goals against Hungary); they know when to counterattack and how to do it (This can be useful when they play against England); and most of all, they have nothing to lose. They had an option to get a draw vs. Austria and be in the easier half of the bracket. What did they do? They chose to be in the tougher section (England -> France -> Germany/Spain/Italy). They are fearless! Any team playing against them is the one on pressure. They will play their best in every match. However, realistically, it’s hard to see them winning the tournament. Out of 24 teams that started in Euro 2016, they were one of the 3 least favorites to win in many betting sites. The other two were Albania and Northern Ireland. Those people who put the numbers are professional at predicting the result. However, all of 3 teams have performed very well.I’d say Iceland have a shot against England. They can frustrate the English by playing very solid defense. If they can repeat what they did against Portugal in the second half, they can trouble big teams like France or Germany (have been struggling offensively). I really wish to see they win the tournament. It’s been a Cinderella story for them, and I hope it will continue.Watch this Icelandic commentator! How are standings determined in most worldwide professional soccer/football leagues, including the World Cup?

Two completely different models are in play here - Leagues and Tournaments. I'll explain both.LeaguesLeagues are what you think of when you think if the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, etc. The format of these are almost always the same - every team plays every other team twice, once home, and once away. In leagues like the Premier League, that means 20 teams, which means 19 home games, and 19 away games, so 38 games total. The Bundesliga has 18 (34 games total), while lower level leagues can have 22 or even 24 teams (the FL Championship, the 2nd tier of English football has 24 teams).Scoring is pretty simple:Win a match, you get 3 points.Tie a match, you get 1 point.Lose a match, you get 0 points. That's it. Positions are simply based on number of points, and ties can be broken many different ways (England uses goal difference first, Spain uses head to head first, etc.)The idea behind this is that every team has had the exact same opponents, and is the fairest way of determining a winner.TournamentsTournaments comprise of International Tournaments (World Cup, European Championships), as well as Regional Club Tournaments (Champions League), and domestic tournaments (League Cups, etc.).In these, the point is to get to a champion quickly - by directly beating each other. You can't have the "more perfect" balanced schedule that a League allows. Usually, tournaments come in two phases:Group Stage. You see this in the World Cup, Euros and Champions League, where 4 teams are put together to play 3 games (World Cup, Euros), or 6 games (Champions League), where the top 2 (or sometimes top 3) move on.Knockout Round. This is where teams get into a traditional bracket and play until there's a winner. Sometimes the knockout is one game (World Cup, Euros), or home-and-away (Champions League, except the final).And... that's it! Hopefully this explains a lot.
