El Paso is a community of very kind hearted people- we are special. El Paso is cleft in two by the majestic Franklin Mountains. This geographical feature creates the “Westside” and the “Northeast.” The Rio Grande nourishes the Upper Valley farmlands to the west and the Lower Valley in the South East. Every area has its delights and issues. We are a very mellow people and one of the safest cities in the USA. If you have children, you may want to check out the schools online. Our districts are: Ysleta Independent School District, El Paso ISD, Clint ISD and Socorro ISD. Horizon City to the east is a growing new community- beautiful new homes and neighborhoods- not in El Paso, but in El Paso County. On a high mesa overlooking the farmlands of the Lower Valley. Just as you are reading this message about Garland, please read that of Chris Stevens as his answers are very informative. I will not cover the same information, just add more. Up until a year ago, I was a City Councilman for District 1, in the Northern most, and newest part of Garland. My tenure on the Council allowed me to learn many key things about Garland. Here is a list of attributes for this great cityGarland is about 100 years old, and developed largely as an industrial area. It is a “1st tier” city within the Dallas-Ft Worth Metroplex, being immediately adjacent to Dallas. Although the DFW airport is 30 miles away (49 km), you can reach it by car in 30 minutes. Dallas Love Field is 20 minutes away, and downtown Dallas is only about 25 minutes away in low traffic times or on the Dart Rail.Today there are over 400 manufacturers in Garland, who make many things you will instantly recognize: Sherwin Williams and Valspar Paints; Kraft and US Foods; Plastipak which makes bottles and packages for products like TIDE detergent; General Dynamics (make things like magnesium forgings for aircraft landing gear); Atlas Coptco (drilling rigs); Garrett Metal Detectors (seen at airports world wide) and many other things.Unemployment is typically in the 3–4% range (very low), and usually there is a job in town for everybody that wants one.The Very Large Array (VLA) of 27 radio telescopes in Socorro, NM, was designed and built in Garland for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and it has been a world class astronomy instrument since the 1970’s. Other radio telescopes and satellite antennas were also developed here. People in my neighborhood and most others can safely go for walks any time of the day or night. Our police force is nationally recognized as one of the best, and with its Neighborhood Patrol Officers throughout the city who get to know and support the various neighborhood groups. Strife and turmoil are almost non-existent.It is in the top 10 BEST RUN cities in America with AAA Bond ratings, and it balances its budget every year.Garland’s city owned power company is far more reliable than any other in the State of Texas, but its rates are in the bottom 3rd. It is also becoming heavy into Green Energy, having purchased the entire outputs of several West Texas wind and solar farms.Garland has a superior emergency response team and fire department, which was proven after an F4 tornado hit the city on December 26, 2015. The city was immediately on the scene so quickly that many lives were saved. The response time of the fire and Police departments averages just a little over 5 minutes.The Emergency Management Department is widely recognized in the area, so much so that Garland is called upon to officially manage emergency issues in 12 surrounding North Texas counties.The newest neighborhoods are in the north end of town, where there remains a little open land to develop. They are really beautiful. There are a number of very beautiful neighborhoods in the older parts of town as well. A real estate agent will be able to tell you all about them. However, with Toyota moving to the DFW area along with many of their suppliers, and State Farm having opened a huge facility. Homes to buy are in short supply, but there is a lot of construction going on to house newcomers.The schools were built within the various neighborhoods, but the Garland Independent School District (GISD) allows you to pick the school you want to send your children to, so long as there is room in that school. This includes some specialty schools like Montessori, STEM, fine arts, and other subjects. New facilities are being built for things like culinary arts, IT, and a dozen or so other fields that students might want. Richardson ISD also has two schools within the city limits and they are highly rated.One of the newest and most modern shopping areas in the DFW area is Firewheel Town Center. It is beautifully built like an older style town, so you can park on the streets next to the store or restaurant you want to visit. There are many choices of excellent places to shop and eat. Many citywide events are held there, like the 4th of July Fireworks display.I hope this gives you a good overview of Garland It is a great place to live and work.
