Absolutely not.Upon arrival, they are put in temporary lodgings, because leaving them outdoors would mean that they died. It’s cold here. They get a very modest allowance; if board is included in the lodgings, a single adult gets SEK 24 per day. In practical terms, if they smoke, they have to cut it down to half a pack per day; if they don’t smoke, they can afford to eat out at McD twice per week, if they are content to keep wearing the clothes they arrived in. I don’t call that “a lot”. (If board is not included, they get SEK 71 per day. A loaf of bread is SEK 25. I say that’s at least as far from “a lot” as the 24 SEK.) They are at first politely asked to go home, then not so politely asked, and finally thrown out of the country. They basically only have access to emergency medical services. (This assumes that their country of origin will take them, which isn’t always the case, but that’s a different issue. Some people also go underground the moment they are ‘politely asked’ as per above, but this means there’s no money thrown at them, either.)Migrants in the more strict definition are people who don’t actually apply for asylum, but just show up at the border. They don’t get to enter Sweden at all. EU citizens, of course, are free to leave and enter at will, so they don’t really fall under “migrants”.

I completely agree with Raghu on reasons for doing a fellowship abroad. If you are going through this for living in a developed country and later boasting about being a “foreign returned” doctor, please don't. It can be difficult to uproot yourself from your social circle (most of us form lasting relationships before we are 30), and work hard in a foreign land. My joke with my wife is that I miss my housemaid and my dhobi more than her! After fellowship, you will discover that you can't stay over in that country and that many things you learnt abroad may not apply in India!Another thing is that most Indian fellowships undoubtedly offer more surgical volume than any international centre.Saying that, training abroad does broaden your horizon and enriches you as a human being. I'm a much more sincere and ethical ophthalmologist after training abroad. The process of applying itself teaches you a lot - how to write a good CV, how to build a base in the subspecialty (as Raghu said) and even basic things like what is proper English!To add to Raghu's list of suggestions, I'm doing a paid fellowship in the UK with the same salary and time table as a UK fellow. There's hands on training and I have been given full registration with the GMC (General Medical Council) without going through exams. Before coming here, I have spent 4 years applying for various fellowships at USA, Singapore and with the ICO. The problem with all of them is the medical license in that country (that may convert it into observership) and funding. Singapore is very competitive as it's a developed city surrounded by developing countries. I have no experience with Australia or Canada but they do look open to paying international fellows unlike USA which will extract payment one way or another.In this regard, UK is a very kind country (search YouTube for which country does the “most good”, Ireland is 1st and UK is 7th on the list). You will often find that residents and post graduate trainees are paid better than fellows.To differ with Raghu, a short term observership is a good idea after doing a fellowship in India.
