PDF Editor FAQ

My mom is going to buy me a Husky dog, but I'm a new owner and many people said to me that they are not suitable for new owners. What do I do?

My mom is going to buy me a Husky dog, but I'm a new owner and many people said to me that they are not suitable for new owners. What do I do?What you do is thank your mom for being kind and generous, but explain to her that Huskies are extremely demanding and suitable only for people with extensive experience with high maintenance dogs from the working group.Huskies are DEFINITELY not for the inexperienced dog owner, nor for anyone who cannot spend 90% of their time with the dog. Huskies are extremely family oriented, easily bored and exceptionally smart. They need a lot of work and play time. If they don’t have a job to do, they’re not really happy. - MarkKwMy service dog Zinoviya

Do infantry soldiers use hearing protection? Is there a high degree of hearing loss? I only see hearing protection at gun ranges.

I was against it for a long time, personally. Even though I was trained in basic audiology and had to ensure the men in my infantry company all had theirs on their uniforms, I still didn’t use them personally. Then one day we were in a firefight and unexpectedly I ended up next to a .50 machine gun. That taught me a valuable lesson in hearing. I lost 30% in my right ear permanently from that one event. I had fired a couple thousand rounds of 5.56 ammunition without it and no ill-effect.After my hard learned lesson I began wearing it every time I left the wire. I would pop one ear out when clearing houses, spending time on the net(radio) or when talking to a local. I trained myself to automatically put them in, like any other military task. A soldier needs their hearing to do their job effectively and good ear-pro(hearing protection) will protect and still allow you to hear pretty well.We used the fairly cheap triple flange rubber style that looks a bit like an arrow. They fit well and work ok. Most importantly, they stay in while running, diving and even while chewing gum.The new style for the cool guys and gals is being provided by the 3M corporation. Meet the PELTOR TEP-100 Tactical Earbud system. It’s an electronic amplification and protection earpiece. Like a hearing aid that cuts out high decibel sounds but makes quiet sounds easier to hear. I have tried them and love them. IF you can find a pair, they run $275–350. Your ears are worth protecting as your ears, eyes and taste senses all degrade with age. Don’t advance the clock needlessly.

What is it like to be a combat medic, and how do I go about becoming one?

My answer is out of date by a few years. I left the Army in 2009. I was a combat medic and deployed to two war zones. What is it like? It's hard. Harder than most other jobs in the Army. You will go through tougher training, must attain higher proficiency and do multiple jobs at the same time. IF you are allowed to be a true combat medic you will be assigned to a combat arms unit. There you will be expected to be a proficient rifleman(riflewoman?) AND an excellent medic. All medics get the same initial training where they will tell you that you are a combat medic. You aren't really. Most will then go on to be assigned to hospitals or field hospitals or surgical units, etc. If you excel and fight for it, you might get assigned to a unit where you can continue to be a combat medic. This includes units like MedEvac, Infantry battalions, Cav, etc. In these units you might earn a spot at advanced training like ACLS, Live tissue lab, and more. As far as I am concerned, you are a combat medic at this point. When you are given the tools and opportunity to succeed and are expected to provide firepower and life saving in the same few minutes…then you know what being a combat medic means.Being a medic in a hospital or aid station or surgical unit is a hard and rewarding job. It also has a bright future attached to it. It is just nothing like being a combat medic in war.I still haven't explained what its like. You will see horrible things. (Bodies torn open, people crying out in agony, open head wounds, horrible burns) Everyone will expect you to act calm and know what to do without hesitation.Relating to the first point, you aren't just a healer and a fighter- you are a source of confidence. A force multiplier. You don't get to rest when everyone else does. Just finished a 26 mile ruck March? While everyone sits down to catch a break you have to go and treat the blisters, bleeding and infected feet, sprained ankles, knees and backs. You will give countless I.V.s- mostly to those who fail to prepare properly, repeatedly. You aren't just a practitioner. You are a teacher and a leader. You must train your combat lifesavers(CLS). You need to earn the respect of the platoon and company soldiers you serve with. Then you have to teach them in simple terms how to treat the most common life threatening injuries. You must train them to be your hands, eyes and ears in case of a mass casualty event with many wounded. You never get to rest. When all of this is done you are expected to continue practicing, learning and seeking more medical knowledge. You can never know enough in this job and its so easy to forget such precise data.If you are confident you are dangerous. Seem confident to give others faith but always remember you only get one chance to help someone in a critical momentYou will see more death and destruction than you peers. You will have to cope with that for the rest of your life. The Army doesn't prepare you for this and the VA is just starting to work on this stuff. If you get emotional easily, skip combat medic. It broke the strongest of men I have ever known. Still I don't regret a moment of it. I miss it every day
