PDF Editor FAQ

Have you ever seen a rude or entitled customer get put in their place?

I’ve seen several rude and/or entitled customers get put in their place and I’ve done it a couple of times myself. I’ll share a couple of the stories. It was the holiday season and I was a cashier, all of the registers were open and we still had long lines, which were actually moving quickly. The register I was on was at the very end and wasn’t usually used in part because it was right up against shelving had very little room to move. I wasn’t in a good mood because I was nearing the end of working a double shift and had already dealt with a number of rude customers, had a box of merchandise knocked off of that adjacent upper shelf onto my head by someone who couldn’t wait for 2 minutes for someone to help them and bruises on my elbow from banging it.I heard her before I saw her, complaining loudly to anyone and everyone about the long lines, that more registers should be opened and the store needed to hire competent people to run the registers. She was a regular and always rude, but that day I’d had enough. She reached the front of the line and she put her items on the belt she continued, but now directed her tirade at me.When she finally paused I greeted her as she preferred, Mrs. <Whatever it was, I forget now> and asked which additional registers we should open, since there weren’t any more, and if she was concerned about competent cashiers, the store was currently hiring; she should put in an application as she knew our job so well. She responded with, “I wouldn’t work here if they paid me a million bucks!” and I countered with, “Then why do you shop in this store and why are you so rude to those of us who do work here?” She went silent. The next several times I saw her in the store she purposely came through my line and, although she didn’t actually apologize, she was civil and almost friendly. I was promoted shortly after and I hope she didn’t revert to her former behavior when I was no longer on the registers. The 2nd I’ll share was a man that was put in his place by another customer. He was a recent immigrant from a middle eastern country and always complained that he shouldn’t have to stand in line, it was beneath his status. Most of the time he was ignored and as a cashier I really couldn’t do anything except apologize for the wait. One day the line was a bit longer than usual (3 people in front of him instead of 1 or 2) and he, as expected, started his complaints. The ensuing conversation went something like this: “I am important, I should be allowed to go the the front of the line!” The man in front of him in line asked him what made him so much better than anyone else, and he said, “You are all commoners. In MY country I am royalty; I should not be subject to the same constraints as commoners.” “In THIS country we don’t have royalty; if you want to be treated as royalty you’ll have to go back to your own country.” “But I can’t go back; my family was deposed and if I return I will be executed.” “So, which is it, patiently waiting your turn like the rest of us commoners or dying as royalty?” “Oh, yes, I see how that could be a problem. Your point is valid; I’ll wait.”Thanks for the opportunity to answer.

What are your biggest pet peeves while waiting in line?

If I’m in line at a store and the cashier is an idiot, I can’t stand that. I’d rather wait in a different line for a competent cashier.

Can you order a Big Mac with quarter pounder patties at McDonald’s?

It used to be the Super Big Mac, back when they had the supersize menu. But You can order it. A competent cashier will see that you get it at a reasonable price. A manager may need to be called in. But it will happen. As an aside, I have frequently ordered a Big Mac with Filet o fish patties during lunch lunch. Delicious. The Big Mac sauce is fantastic with fish.
