But if you are talking about Marine people vs enemy people you best remember something different about United States Marines.They will hunt you down, hurt you until you are dead, and then they will blow up or burn all your stuff. Sometimes they won’t destroy it…….but that’s because they are going to STEAL YOUR STUFF and divvy it up among their own men.Weather, temperature, terrain or Marines being the group in lesser numbers in manpower - none of those will not stop Marines. If they are grossly outnumbered they smile……… because there’s more bad guys they can shoot without having to walk too far to get a lot more notches. And, when surrounded, they have the knowledge that they can shoot in any direction that they want. That is a “target-rich” situation with plenty of targets for even the hungriest shooters among them.Marines WILL find the bad guys, and then they will kill the bad guys. That’s the reason they stayed up late and got up very early.The U.S. Marines don’t have time to play cat & mouse with their enemy. While the enemy always reverts to the ideology of “snoop & poop” aka monkey’s in the jungle or guerrilla's in the mist, since they seem to always fail at frontal assault. One of the favorites of Marines is to play “kill the moving bushes”. The Marines play target practice excelling in Fire-team Rushes and full frontal assaults. No, not human waves as the Japanese and Chinese tactics of WW2 and Korea, (what we call fire team rushes) just advance, advance, advance……repeat as necessary…… until the Marines are standing on corpses and looking for those that “beat feet” away from where they were. That enemy maneuver was “the big Di-Di” or “Zippa-Di-Di-Do-Da”. This is when Marines smile, fart, and simply change direction as they continue their advance to close on those who temporarily jumped out of one (or more) Marines sight picture.Marines will always charge toward the sound of battle and in the enemies direction - - until those Marines see, smell or feel the enemy presence. Yup, it’s TRUE - - even Marine Pilots must serve mandatory 1 year infantry tours every set cycle of their career. That’s every 5th year and that includes every Marine Pilot (fixed wing or chopper).Do not call the Navy’s ships “boats”. That makes them pissed. But when our armed forces become engaged in combat with an armed enemy of the United States - we all respect each other for the jobs they each do and the skill sets each branch contributes. Later, in down time, we can mess with each other with put downs, sarcasm, grabassing and probing to see who’s gonna get pissed off and want to fight before the beer is ALL gone.Chipped teeth, black eyes, cuts ’n bruises - that’s all part of playtime for Marines and Army warriors.And you better believe Sailors jump into the fray with abandon as easily as they jump into the sack with the local skivvy queen of whatever port or ville they find themselves in. Later - - Everything is all made good again when the beer truck shows up to resupply. Everyone becomes just another happy Twinkledick all over again.Marines are trained to fight,….but SPECIFICALLY - to locate, close and kill enemy troops and to capture and destroy enemy combatant’s equipment, supplies and shelter. The Navy transports Marines where they need to be. Navy Pilots participate with Marine Pilots in providing close-air-support while ships guns provide artillery support. The Air Force provides long range air support. The Army provides large scale, long term ground infantry and supporting elements. The Coast Guard protects our shores back home and for backup we have the National Guard. Best shot I ever made: I had reported to my last duty station, the USS Nitro AE23 and I had 10 months left on my 4-year active duty contract. I had made E4(GMG3)(I’m not in either of these. I used them so you’d get an idea of what it’s like. Both are at least 20 years later than my time in service 1977–1981 ship service ended January 1981. The MG in the top pic is an M240, possibly the “B” or "M240 Bravo" variant. Both pix are post-9-11)8 months before i got to the boat so life for me was not too terrible. We were told that there was to be an “unrep” (underway replenishment) with several ships in a carrier group. this is in the North Atlantic. We’re doing about 5–7 knots and the ship we’re going to send munitions to pulls up alongside us and matches speed and heading. I hear my name called over the 1MC and they tell me to “lay to the armory” as I was to shoot the line throwing gun to the ship. I had always qualified expert with small arms so I was not too worried. I go to the armory and Posmotto gives me an M14, a line throwing attachment, a 20 round magazine, and 5 blank cartridges. Tells me Grif has the shot line and is waiting for me aft of the Hotel area Starboard side. I get there and the ship I’m going to shoot to is about 100 meters away. Both ships are rolling side to side and fore-aft, and winds were about 25 knots (15 knots if we were not heading into it.) I had never done this before. I ask Grif what is protocol and he gives me the skinny. Then he asked if I’d ever shot a line gun or grenade gun. Nope to both. He tells me: “You see the guy just forward of the Hotel area? Well, that’s the guy that you need to get the rubber projectile to.” I said OK. Then he says: “I’ll bet you 20 dollars you can't hit him.” I asked to see the cash, he pulls it out. I get the all clear and I fired that bad boy and literally put it into the baseball glove he was wearing! It was a thing of beauty, I tell ya. Grif pays up and after that day they always made me shoot the line whenever we sent to a vessel. Later on bets, I hit 3 other guys with the line gun. One was a Marine sleeping on a forklift on the helo deck of a “gator carrier.” I was supposed to put the projectile into the hangar bay, but the sleeping jarhead, directly above where the projectile was to go, was just too good to pass up. I knocked him off the forklift. Not because of the force, but the surprise. Soon as I hit him I heard them call me on the 1MC and they want me on the bridge. O.O.D. (officer of the deck) was pissed like you would not believe. He tells me that if I hit one more person deliberately he’s going to nail my ass to the mast and bust me down to E1.
