PDF Editor FAQ
What must I know about the city, Buffalo (NY), before coming here to study at University at Buffalo?
I moved to Buffalo from California (my home state) when I was 23, something that is virtually unheard of. I was in Buffalo for 2 years and didn't meet a single other Californian the whole time I was there. But because I am an outsider, I have a pretty objective opinion on Buffalo when compared to other US regions, if I might say so myself.First I might say that a lot of people interested in this answer will be looking to move to Buffalo from India/Asia/Africa as exchange students at UB (University At Buffalo). UB is a very international school and will welcome you. However, Buffalo and "the Rust Belt" will surprise you by being very gritty. There is a middle class but a large lower class and the areas of the city will be very split between "black and white", in a stark way, and this is true of many cities in the USA, from Cleveland, to DC, to Chicago, to San Francisco/Oakland. Even though Buffalo is practically on the Eastern seaboard, it has a more "midwestern" feel because of the demographics. However, it is also near two large bodies of water, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Buffalo is really not that cold because of the heat capacity of water, but there is “lake effect” snow: Lake-effect snow - WikipediaAnyway, Buffalo is a really decent blue-collar city in Western New York. The cost of living is very low compared to major cities. Off hand, I'd say the rent there is about 1/3 - 1/5 the cost of NYC, SF, Chicago or DC. Buffalo has a solid arts scene and a low cost of living. Buffalo is still recovering from the long term effects of the Rust Belt decline (think of Detroit, but about half as bad). Those that love ruin porn and decrepit buildings will like Buffalo. It has a single metro line running north south between downtown and North Buffalo, with the last stop near the South Campus of UB (SUNY Buffalo). You can take the bus from South Campus to North Campus, which is what I did for two years. The subway in Buffalo plays non-stop classical music. It's weird. It's eerie. It's like a bizarre scene from the distant past or Orwellian future. Although there is heavy snowfall in general in the winter, the temperatures are actually fairly mild and the summers are very pleasant with temperatures rarely above 90 degrees. It is cold enough however, to require wearing gloves to drive a car, somethign I wouldn't have every imagined having to do coming from California. People in Buffalo, including young people returning from college, are enthusiastic about their city and are invested in rehabbing it. A lot of that rehabilitation comes in the form of marketing to get more people and businesses to move to Buffalo. Buffalo is also a fairly bikable city. I used to bike from South Campus to Delaware Park, Elmwood or downtown frequently. Also, I love Delaware Park, which is a wonderful multipurpose park in the center of Buffalo with golf, tennis, basketball courts and is a great place to run laps, or even cross country ski in the winter!!A nice day on Elmwood Ave, near Allentown:Allentown:The problem with UB, is that it is a suburban, "commuter" campus:So if you go to UB, you will probably want to live near South Campus, not North Campus (!)And let's not forget about Buffalo State College, which is happily better situated near Allentown:And Canisius:And all the other universities in Buffalo:Colleges and UniversitiesIn short, there are several saving graces about Buffalo, despite the fact that it is still a gritty, decrepit city:1) Elmwood and Allentown - arts districts just outside of downtown2) SUNY Buffalo, the gem of gems in the SUNY crown3) Good barscene, there are bars everywhere in Buffalo, in different neighborhoods.4) Cheap housing.5) Wegman's grocery stores- people truly cream their pants over Wegmans, I don't really get it, but it is more than decent6) Buffalo State college is near downtown, and is a good option if you want something in a more urban setting than UB.7) People are genuine, nice and fairly loc'ed out- you will have a hard time finding transient people.8) Fairly liberal and the good kind of progressive politics.9) Gridiron and hockey are big - it's fun to be a Buffalo Bills fan or Sabres fan for awhile.10) Delaware Park11) Buffalo is not far from the city of Niagara and Niagara Falls and the Canadian border with Ontario. Buffalo is 2 hours from Toronto.12) Fairly bikable city if you can ride through slush half the year. (Get Mountain Bike tires).13) Single subway line that runs from North Buffalo to downtown Buffalo, I used it about once per month, but probably would have used it more if I didn't bike so much.14) Did I mention Delaware Park ?!?15) Did I mention Lexington Coop food market?I can honestly say, I kinda miss Buffalo. This is another good article on the subject:Page on mainstreethost.com
If I visit your country/state/city, what is the dish I should not miss?
In upstate New York, USA, you should eat a beef on weck sandwich. It's slow-roasted, thin-sliced beef on a sandwich roll that has caraway seeds and salt baked on top of it.It's usually served with horseradish sauce. The top cut surface of the roll is dipped in beef juices. A pickle is always on the plate, and usually some fries or german potato salad. A beer on the side, and you're good to go. If you're driving or abstain from alcohol, then have some "pop" instead. (as soda is referred to around here.)Buffalo wings are also traditional to this area, as are garbage plates (don't ask; too disturbing to look at, let alone contemplate eating), but beef on weck has more history and is the most delicious in my opinion.Thank you for the A2A!
What is one thing you want to say to Quora?
We’ve all seen them. Those dreaded, annoying questions. What does it mean when my vomit is green? What does it mean when my vomit is purple? What does it mean when my vomit is orange? What does it mean when my vomit is blue? What does it mean when my vomit is iridescent? One after the other, the same question over and over, with only one small difference. One day, I opened up Quora and found my feed spammed with a dozen of these questions. Ten minutes later, when I refreshed my feed, another dozen of the same questions with only one different criteria popped into my feed.I went to the author’s profile and clicked on their questions link. The person had literally pages upon pages, numbering in the hundreds, of the same question. And every time I refreshed the person’s question page, another few new ones were created. So I muted the person. And since then, I’ve muted every single person who has spammed my feed in the same way.I don’t need to tell Quora how their partner program creates spam. Everyone knows it and Quora gives us tools to be able to deal with it.Muting annoying question writers has been very effective for me.However, recently, I found this question on my feed:What are the best restaurants near Bentley University's campus?I clicked the Pass button.Later, when I refreshed my feed, it was replaced with:What are the best restaurants near University at Buffalo’s campus? Then with:What are the best restaurants near Buffalo State College’s campus? And:What are the best restaurants near Temple University’s campus? After half a dozen of these, I decided to mute the author.I pulled up the log and clicked on the author. And… um…The author of the questions is Quora University Question Author. The description for the account is:Official account that adds questions about universitiesThis is the official Quora account that asks questions on universities.Since this was an official Quora account as opposed to a real user, there was no option to Mute the author. What kind of fresh hell is this? After another dozen or so of the “What are the best restaurants near XYZ’s campus?” question, I finally caved and unfollowed the Restaurant topic.Problem solved.Until today. I opened up my feed to find this:What is the best food to try when visiting Oman?Guess who wrote this question? Quora Country Question Author. So my message to Quora management is this:I can put up with trolls because I can block them.I can put up with abusive people because I can report them.I can put up with spammers because I can mute them. But please don’t start spamming our feeds with questions that we have no way to hide or mute.I realize that the site wouldn’t exist if you couldn’t make revenue from it. But forcing things down people’s throats on a content site is not the right way to generate revenue. If Quora is going to be creating official accounts that generate spammy questions, please introduce a feature that will allow us to silence those questions without having to remove or unfollow topics from our account.
