Who could possibly have guessed that a man who’s only successful talent had been Con-Artistry, a jerk whose entire business model was based on cheating his contractors, a guy who couldn’t tell the truth to save his children’s lives, etc. would cheat his followers. Oh, wait:As I explained back then, Trump’s donation forms first included a pre-checked box, in very fine, very wordy print, that opted donors in for multiple payments. These started as campaign fundraisers in March of 2020, asking in fairly plain text to make the donation monthly. It didn’t take long for the campaign to figure out that adding a second pre-checked box was far more effective at bringing in the unexpected payments. Early on, supporters might have missed the extra donation for Trump’s birthday in June.As the Trump Campaign got more desperate for money, the wording in the pre-checked boxes got longer and longer, obviously efforts to TLDR the prospective donor. And they became harder to find on the page, moved to a narrow column on the side of the web page that required scrolling to see. The money-bombs grew more nuts: the monthly checkbox changed to a weekly payment, thus securing a big chunk of money before the unwitting donor would even see a credit card statement. At various times, additional money-bombs opted donors in for an extra $100. Trump Campaign donations surged — followed by a massive surge in refund requests about a month later.The Campaign, under the direction of “Digital Director” Gary Coby, tried a variety of experiments to grab those dollars. They added a countdown timer, suggesting that a donation must be sent immediately to cash in on some big advantage — but of course, the actual reason was to hurry the donor past the check-boxes. This was apparently a very effective tactic, as it was still in place post-election when I started looking into Trump’s post-election fundraising. People on Trump’s list could expect to receive as many as 15 emails a day, each potentially directing donors to a different donation page using different strategies, as Coby’s team honed their tactics, figuring out what worked and what didn’t.After the election, it was obvious that Trump was trying to cheat his followers based on the “Big Lie” that he won the election and would spend that money on fighting in court. Every campaign these days supports a legal fund for court challenges, and Trump started funding that in October, then doubled down on once he lost the election. But within two weeks of the election, after all of his serious, white shoe law firms quit. But money was still coming in.Post-election didn’t slow down. See that “1000% Match” being offered? That’s you making the match if you don’t uncheck the 1000% box — you make ten matching payments to “Fight [for] Democracy” or “Fight Back” or something like that. But once the lawyers were gone, most of the money went to Trump’s “Leadership PAC,” an established legal slush fund used by many politicians to allow their donors to pay for vacations, toys, etc. They tossed a few coins to the RNC, as well, to keep them from saying the wrong things and ending this money train. Then they added a separate second monthly payment in early December. In December, the “monthly” part was gone, they were back to the monthly thing: if you didn’t opt out, you would be paying Fat Donnie your selected amount effectively forever. And of course, there was no obvious way to end these payments.So it’s no surprise that thousands of people have complained to credit card companies and banks about this, asking for these payments to be stopped, asking for their money back, amid bank account overdrafts and blown-out credit limits. In fact, the current total that Trump’s various “funds” are currently required to refund has topped $122 million, and that’s primarily based on a slew of complaints that started coming in immediately after the election: over 530,000 refunds prior to the election.And it hasn’t stopped. In fact, in 2021, he turned up the heat and changed it around again. Once Joe Biden was Inaugurated President, Trump couldn’t sell the Big Lie anyone. So went directly for all the money he could see still on the table: he told all of his followers to donate to his PACs, not the “RINOs” at the RNC.Much of this money was brought in by the WinRed corporation. WinRed was built as an answer to the Democrats’ ActBlue, but of course, being a Republican entity, they’re a for-profit company, not a non-profit like ActBlue. WinRed takes 30 cents and 3.8% of each donation. They pocketed about $120 million in the 2020 election. WinRed was pretty closely tied to the Trump Campaign — Trump even supposedly came up with their name. Oh… and WinRed keeps their fees even on refunded donations. While the Trump Campaign is over and Trump may not run for office again, the tactics built between the Trump Campaign and WinRed are likely to become a standard operating procedure going forward in Republican Politics.
