PDF Editor FAQ

Should there be a public map of gun owners in the US available online?

I don’t think there should be a public map of anyone except sex offenders.I have a question and a comment regarding this subject.Question:I fail to understand the purpose of this, is it just to make anti-gun people feel more safe? I don’t think it would help ANYONE feel safe honestly. I don’t want my business put on the internet for strangers to see, that’s why any internet profiles I have are set to private. When I carry a firearm, it’s always concealed. I do this because people who openly see a firearm are much more nervous, even I don’t like seeing people open carry for a many reasons. How would this keep gun owners safe from people looking to break into a house and find a firearm? How would an anti-gun owner feel more safe knowing that the neighbor next to him has a handgun? It would just create more stress and anxiety.Out of sight, out of mind. You live every day walking in public in the US with people carrying firearms and you’re never injured. Worrying about it when you see a map of people isn’t going to stop crime or do anything but annoy people. If the point of this would be to make people safer by allowing the government to know who owns a firearm, this is still a ridiculous idea. In almost every state, the government requires that you fill out an ATF background check to obtain a firearm. There is a database of everyone who has filled out this form. If the government needed to know if someone was a legal firearm owner, it wouldn’t be all that difficult for them. Illegally owned firearms, however, have no database or way of tracing.Comment:This would be nearly impossible for multiple reasons. First and foremost, it’s a violation of privacy.Secondly, most states don’t actually require a registration for firearms. I live in Ohio. The only “registry” is the original bill of sale when I purchase from a gun store, and even then, it’s just a receipt, not a registration.Thirdly, no gun owner would willingly let someone put out an online map of gun owners. They did this in New York once, and there was extreme outrage. Needless to say, the newspaper that posted it took it down. Would all knife owners, bat owners, or alcohol consumers be happy to know that they’re on an online map just so people are aware of their presence? I’d doubt it.

If a cell of terrorists got heavily armed through legal gun show purchases and then committed a record-breaking mass shooting, would that be enough to finally close the gun show loophole for background checks?

The ‘gun show loophole’ may be exaggerated to some degree. I can’t speak for all the states or know the laws concerning gun sales, but in Ohio, to buy a firearm at a gun show, if it’s a licensed dealer selling it a background check MUST be done. In Ohio, private sales between individuals do not require a background check. So that may be the loophole here in Ohio that a background check may not be required in a private sale. If I was to sell a firearm to an individual, I would require them to sign a bill of sale and record their information from a drivers license or a state ID.
