PDF Editor FAQ

How do the undergraduate programs at Columbia and NYU compare?

It depends whether you seek a traditional college experience (Columbia), or a unique one (NYU).Some pros about NYU that have been missed:Jobs/Internships — In the summer, people from everywhere will come to NYC for internships. But during the schools year, NYU students have the ability to do part-time internships. Stern doesn't have classes on Fridays, and many people block their classes to 3 days, so you can get in 2 full days of work.Study abroad — NYU has its own campuses in London, Florence, Prague, Paris, Madrid, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Ghana, and the new Abu Dhabi branch of NYU. Stern, Tisch, and pre-meds can actually study abroad due to the huge course offerings! 50% of students study abroad. Note that these campuses have 100-200 NYU students, so you won't get the total "immersion". Stern students have IBEX, which is an exchange program so you can get total immersion in the country you want. Also, some students do multiple studies abroad (like me)Housing & Lifestyle — NYU dorms are actually apartments or converted hotels. This means you get a full kitchen and bathroom, so you can cook, party, or do whatever you want. You aren't required to down disgusting cafeteria food like a traditional college.Special events — In the past, NYU has gotten special events like free iPads from LinkedIn, early screenings of movies, etc. Stern has leading businesses (finance, marketing, etc.) and startups that come in talk at different club meetings weekly.Minimal Greek life — Depending on your preferences. I consider this a pro.You can live like an individual. — If you aren't into the traditional college experience, you'll enjoy NYU. It feels like you are on your own in NYC and just happen to take classes instead of (or in addition to) going to work. Some cons about NYU:The only schools worth going to are Tisch and Stern. People in both of these schools look down on anyone from another school and tend to interact only with people in their school.Stern is filled with some of the most selfish douchebags I've ever met. (Despite the fact that they are, for the most part, Wharton rejects). But considering how the business world works, they will be undoubtably successful.People don't think you are as smart as an Ivy Leaguer. Everyone and their mother knows NYU is a safety school for most people. (Of course, NYU was the first choice for some people.)NYC is an expensive city to live in.Very little common space. Once you've formed your clique of friends, it's much more difficult to bump into new people on the streets of NYC filled with strangers compared to a closed campus filled with students.Professors are a hit or miss like any other school, but I think NYU has slightly more misses. But NYU has much more diverse course offerings.Overall, unless you want to totally immerse yourself in the NYC lifestyle, I would recommend Columbia over NYU—if not just to write it on your resume.
