PDF Editor FAQ

Can I edit my payslip and then share it with the HR who is recruiting me, to get a better hike? What kind of background verification takes place in Indian companies?

This is still a kind of outdated practice followed by many companies when it is not necessary at all. Some companies do look at all the ways to underpay or reduce the salary of a new candidate. If the backgroud check fails, when they check with the company, it may lead of bigger problem. I do feel this practice of getting payslips is not professional. There some of the companies never care about your previous salary, they just ask your expections and check if that falls within their budget, if so they will be more than happy to offer your expectations.Your current salary shouldn’t even matter to your future employer.

How can "I" become an airline pilot in India? (This is a question specific to myself. More details regarding my bio have been added in the 'question comments' section. Kindly go through it before answering.)

Hi! I know of quite a few people who have switched careers especially from Merchant Navy to Civil Aviation but most of them left their previous employments to pursue flying. Since you do not want to jump the ship (sorry, couldn’t help) right at this moment, I suggest that you start looking for clubs or schools which will let you fly on a pro rata basis. (None of them are functional in or around Kolkata anymore, closest ones I am aware of are GATI, Bhubaneswar and Bihar Flying Club, Patna)Hailing from West Bengal, the biggest hurdles were obtaining the Police and Educational Verification for me. All other states have online portals but our state is still following the prehistoric manual verification procedure. Due to reasons unknown, in addition to the State Police, the CID conducts a separate background check as well. This alone took five months for most of us. By the time you complete two voyages, you may chance upon your security clearance.Next comes the DGCA computer number application procedure.(Without this, you can not appear for any of the examinations and you need to have the Educational verification for this). This can be done on your own but the process is a bit tedious. My colleagues from Delhi did it themselves since it was easier for them to access the DGCA office in Jor Bagh. There are agencies in Delhi which manage the entire procedure, albeit at a hefty price. DGCA is in the middle of launching an integrated platform named Pariksha for all licensed crew but is currently a mess, as is in most of the cases. (All candidate registration will be on Pariksha henceforth, apparently Udaan, the older platform, is no longer accepting any new application. There is a detailed guide for application of computer number which is attached here. http://dgca.nic.in/admit/Guidelines_to_candidates_applying_for_Pilots_License_Examination.pdf )Theoretical Examinations: A lot has been said about these and there is a myth in Dwarka Sector 7 (if you throw a stone here, you will either hit a dog or a pilot) that these can not be done without any guidance. Till date, I have not attended any class other than the ground classes in my flying institute and I am pretty confidant that DGCA examinations can be cleared with the right books. Just 70% is required to clear the tests which can be comfortably achieved with the help of the books. The Radio Telephony test might be a little challenging but for someone who has practical operational experience, it shouldn’t pose much of a problem. (Apart from the frequencies, which I believe are MF/HF for vessels, the phraseology is almost the same. Practical flying experience will help in developing this skill.)Bear in mind that these examinations are conducted every two months. Hence, you have to plan well beforehand so that you are ashore. DGCA intimates you of the examination dates at their whim and fancy. If on the upside of luck, two or three weeks prior. Another point to note is that you can not appear for more than one Technical Specific Paper in a single attempt. (For the particular type of Single Engine or Multi-Engine aircraft you will fly during your training. People usually need two endorsements for CPL with Multi-Engine IR) . Hence, you have to wait for another two months for the next attempt.Flying is the easier part in comparison. Following are the mandates by DGCA, in the preceding six months to license submission. (Assuming that you intend to acquire a CPL with Multi-Engine Instrument Rating)15 hours of Pilot-in-command(PIC)10 Take-offs and Ldgs by night (PIC)5 hours of night flying (PIC)250 NM X-Cty check by day and 120 NM X-Cty check by night (These are counted as PIC and adds up to about 4 to 5 hours of the first condition)General Flying Tests by Day and Night (PIC)(both SE & ME)Instrument Rating Test (PIC)You have to plan your training in two tranches. From 0 to 100 hours in the first salvo which will cover the chunk of X-cty (50 hours mandatory). The second part will be more critical since this is time-sensitive and needs to be completed as quickly as possible provided all the theoretical papers are clear. (You can not take a general flying test on an a/c unless you have the particular specific paper clear as these are considered as PIC flying.)If you want to do this in piecemeal, a reasonable estimate says it will take about two years subject to weather conditions. The ideal time to appear for the theoretical papers is in the winters so that by the time you return, weather will be above minima for training. It takes around 15–16 hours (about two weeks) to go solo, worst case scenario 20. Fly for two months at feverish pace, rake up around 80-100 hours. This will be slower because this includes dual (with instructor) flying. Complete about 40 hours of X-cty. (Appear for the Multi-engine Tech Specific in this attempt so that you can take the skill tests in the next round)Next tranche, finish the X-cty part (50 hours mandatory for CPL IR) as this gives you some leeway for the PIC requirement. You have to fly some dual sorties for Instrument Time which are a bit time-consuming. We have something known as timer for the last six months. It starts either with 250 NM X-Cty check or the first night solo whichever happens first. It is so calculated that you will fulfill the DGCA flying requirements if you finish the rest of your flying syllabus within the next time six months or ten weeks in your case. So once you are absolutely certain that you will be able to complete the course within the time frame (and all papers clear), go for it.I have chalked out a game plan assuming that finances are not an issue because hourly flying rates keep fluctuating owing to fuel prices and availability of aircraft and instructors. The first six months will go by waiting for the requisite clearances and the computer number. Then you will get an opportunity to appear for the theoretical papers (Educational verification doesn’t take as long as the police verification. Apply for the theoretical papers as soon as you get the Computer number. Police verification is required for the flying part only.) . If you can fly and appear for the tests simultaneously, nothing like it. This will greatly shorten the duration and is honestly the utopia. A lot of our people tried this and horribly failed. (I do not mean to discourage you but in my humble opinion, it is sensible to nibble away than to take the bull by the horns.)Hope that I have been able to shed some light and didn’t manage to erode your enthusiasm and motivation. I will be happy to address your queries if there be any. Been a little busy lately, kindly excuse the delay in response. Best of luck!

Can someone share his/her NMIMS interview experience?

NMAT'17 score: 256 in first attempt, but scored 60 marks in Language Skills, 60 marks was the sectional cutoff set for NMIMS Mumbai, so got away with that!Overall cutoff was 210 marks by the way.Work ex: 2 years in LPG bottling plant10th/12th/Grad: 89.85/88.62/74.30GEMTook a drop since Aug, not that it mattered in my NM interview.Venue: NMIMS Mumbai campusInterview date: 06–02–2018That day, I had an interview for MBA Core in morning slot and for MBA HR in afternoon slot. I do not remember the questions distinctly, but I am sharing the experience of the morning interview here, regarding HR interview I can only say that I was not prepared, hungry and somewhat tired after completing the MBA Core process, so just scrapped my way through the HR process. Before beginning the selection process, we were assembled in 2 lecture halls wrt the group numbers assigned to each candidate, there the staff members asked for original ID proof and NMAT scorecard/call letter. No other verification done. Document verification is done once candidate gets selected for admission and he/she goes to the college to pay the fees and secure the admission. One professor arrived and explained us the selection process. He also mentioned the weightage of each of the evaluation parameters, NMAT score weightage was 70%.Interestingly, he asked us to make sure that we do not carry NMAT scorecard while going for the PI, and told us specifically to not disclose our score even if the interview panel asks us. He said that this is to be followed to ensure that the NMAT score does not become a factor to evaluate a candidate during his/her PI.Personally, I was glad with this system, not only because the PI evaluation becomes more objective, but also because now the panel may not ask me regarding other calls or priority and unnecessarily grill me on those questions! Anyways, after this announcement, we were directed for case discussion to different rooms wrt the assigned group number.Case discussion (CD): Topic- A farmer couldn’t pay the bank the loan back and the bank chose to publicly shame him. He committed suicide because of this. Was it fair on the bank’s part to do this?Only 15 minutes for discussion among a group of 12 members, candidates were cutting each other's sentences sometimes, but overall everyone got a chance to speak and the group performance was okay. I pitched in 4 times.I was 8th among the panel of 12 candidates, so there was a gap of around 2 hours between CD and PI. We were sent back to the previous lecture hall and asked us to wait there till our chance came for PI. Now, this was my first B-School interview, and I have heard the instances that sometimes, even candidates with NMAT score of 240, 245, etc. were getting rejected. I was reasonably sure that I will get selected eventually for MBA Core program, because of my good NMAT score and the tendency of NMIMS Mumbai to select the candidates with work experience over freshers. But still, I was quite nervous. Every candidate till 5th number were giving the similar feedback. “Chill hai!” I felt little more positive due to such feedbacks. I was called to wait outside the PI room when 6th candidate's PI was going on. The feedback of 6th candidate threw me back to nervous state, when he came out shocked and disappointed and told that his was a stress interview. I feared that the PI panel may try to finish off the remaining 6 interviews in this fashion as they have got tired, restless and hungry, as it was already past 12 PM. But the 6th candidate's experience was one-off. The candidate before me had a friendly interview. So, with little tentativeness but high hopes, I went inside the room when called.3 panel members: P1,P2,P3 (left to right)P1: middle aged ladyP2: around 50 years old gentlemanP3: middle aged gentlemanM: MeDon't know if any of them was alumni.Upon my entering, I first greeted the Madam and then the Sirs, they greeted me with a smile and offered me to sit.P2: So Viraj, you're from Gujarat right? Why not take admission in a college of Gujarat? Why do you want to come to Mumbai?M: Explained about the benefits of Mumbai as a commercial hub of India, advantages of NM brand and its ability to attract eminent industry leaders to deliver guest lectures, etc.P3: Tell me about your work experience.M: Explained the business that my company was involved in India. Elaborated on my role and responsibilities as a plant engineer.P3: Oh, so you must be working in unsafe conditions. Used the technical term BLEVE, it's an acronym for a kind of explosion that is associated with LPG.M(somewhat surprised and impressed due to usage of this term): No Sir, while LPG is a hazardous chemical, the plant I was working in was not unsafe, we employed safety features and safe practices to prevent the accidents.P3: What were the safety features employed in your plant?M(happy): Spoke about various safety features for around 2–3 minutes.P2: What is your choice of branch in MBA?M: Operations. Elaborated a little bit.P2(with a wry smile): What if we do not offer you Operations?M(tentatively): Sir, I went through the course structure online and saw that 1st year courses are common. It's only in 2nd year that electives are chosen and the branch specialisation get decided according to our choice of electives. Could you please elaborate on the system for allotment of electives?P2(still smiling wryly): We cannot reveal that to you at this point of time.P1(jumping in for the 1st time): So Viraj, you mentioned Saudi Aramco in your answer. It has been in the news in recent times. Can you tell us why?M: Told them about their announcement to launch 2 trillion dollar IPO, and how countries like USA,UK are trying to list the IPO on the respective stock markets.P1: Which are the stock exchanges in India?M: BSE and NSEP1: How are BSE and NSE index points calculated?M: Told her that they are calculated on the basis of the stock prices of the leading companies on that day.P1: What are the number of companies whose price are considered to calculate the indices?M: 50 for NSE, may be 30 for BSE, I am not sure.P1: What are the various indices within BSE and NSE?M: Sorry Madam, I do not know. All three interviewers looked towards each other, nodded and asked me to leave.M: Thank you Madam. Thank you Sirs.Overall, I felt that I did okay. The panel was courteous and the interview lasted for 10–15 minutes.Result: ConvertedCore: Merit no. 39HR: Merit no. 326I fared well, but the point to keep in mind is in spite of 70% weightage, NMAT score is not the only factor to crack the process. I know a person who did not get selected in spite of good score of 232 and 30 months of work experience in a good company. I know some freshers who did not get selected or have merit number over 600 in spite of score of over 240.Having a good grip over current affairs and your field of work ex and graduation is necessary, but to exhibit confidence through positive body language is even more important to secure admission in a top notch college. All the best to the future aspirants!
