Many wild animals live in somehow protected environments, such as caves or forests, while others live under the soil. My guess is that many of them just wait for the winds to pass over. Farming animals would have some troubles, though.Interestingly enough, the eye of the hurricane is like a giant cage for birds caught in the storm. They will stay in the center of the storm where its calmer, and depending on how far the storm travels will determine how displaced they are.Fish are pretty delicate. After Hurricane Andrew, the government estimated AT LEAST 9 million fish died in Louisiana alone (other estimates claim about 182 million in the Florida Everglades basin) that would live in in-land lakes, streams, etc. The saltwater from the ocean mixing with the fresh/brackish water in-land is devastating to fish that cannot handle that.Other aquatic creatures like turtles, crabs, etc. can lose their breeding grounds or habitat due to flooding flushing sediments and sands out of an area.Mammals, unfortunately, suffer heavy casualties too. Baby squirrels and chipmunks that are nesting in a tree can easily suffer death, either from being thrown around, separated from the parents resulting in the inability to be raised or just conveniently plopped down right in the range of a predator that managed to ride out the storm. Animals on the ground suffer the risk of drowning from flooding.One of the things that were most shocking after the hurricane was how bare the trees were. Besides lots of trees getting blown over or broken, the ones that survived were almost naked looking. I didn't expect that for some reason. So today as I was on my way home from buying some last minute supplies I couldn't help but notice all the birds, ducks, squirrels, and lizards and wonder how and where they would take shelter.

Traffic stop.I open carry a standard-looking 1911 style semiautomatic pistol. Nothing exceptionally remarkable. A couple months ago, I was pulled over because I didn't have a license plate on the rear of my truck. I had just gotten out of the Navy, moved to Louisiana for my new job, and still had my truck registered in my home state of Missouri. In Missouri, a truck licensed over 12k pounds is only issued a single plate to be placed on the front. All other vehicles receive two, but trucks this large are expected to be towing frequently, so they only get the one. After being around the nation, I think Missouri is the only state that does this.Anyway, Lousiana State Police see that I don't have a standard rear plate and pulls me over. This is the ninth time I've been pulled over for a license plate issue in my life, so I'm laughing and sighing in frustration simultaneously. Being armed, I know the best way to handle it is to wait with my hands on the wheel until I receive directions from the officer to do otherwise. As I'm waiting for him to approach my window, I glance in my mirror and see him motioning me back to him. I've never done this before, so I wait until he gives a second obvious motion to exit the vehicle.After the second motion, I open my door and step out. Since my gun is still on my hip (completely legal), I slowly start walking back with my hands held out about a foot and a half from my body in a loose surrender posture. I don't want to startle the guy.As I'm approaching my rear wheel, he notices I'm armed and before making any further commands, unholsters his sidearm. He has me get my hands on my tailgate and proceeds to give orders and takes action to the nature of removing my holstered weapon, with which he has problems because my holster employs both active and passive retention mechanisms. I protested being disarmed; however, I was engaged in 100% lawful activity, so I preferred to go home rather than argue the point.Once that fiasco was handled, the remainder of the stop was mundane and professional. I showed all required documents and explained Missouri licensing. He basically shrugged, and we went out separate ways.In short, I was drawn on for no other reason than I was armed.
