The resulting high voltage can kill you. Ironically it’s OK to short a CT. **** SAFETY **** SAFETY **** SAFETY ****Folks who work on the power lines will go to great length to make sure the lines are de-energized. But this is not enough. They also install short circuits between each line and to the ground. This is no kidding scary stuff. For example, this grounding rod is designed to short circuit the power line to ground. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near it!In electronics you will occasionally encounter safety interlocks. Especially in high voltage equipment. These mechanical interlocks will short out the high voltage section(s) of the equipment to protect the technicians.Finally, may I introduce the crowbar circuit:In this circuit the over voltage section monitors the output of the power supply. If the voltage is excessive, it will fire the Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR). This short circuits the power supply protecting the sensitive load. If all goes as planned, the fuse will open.FUN FACT: SCRs and GTOs are the largest semiconductor devices on the planet.Regards,APDahlenP.S. one more application. Many small electronics devices are physically “programmed” by short circuiting certain pins on an integrated circuit. For example, from the factory, a radio may only operate on certain frequencies.
