PDF Editor FAQ
Do you think cutting food stamps will be a big mistake?
Do you think cutting food stamps will be a big mistake?Let’s start with a simple change of terminology that will make this a bit clearer. The USDA no longer issues Food Stamps. The program was phased out in 2004 in favor of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Currently, people who receive benefits (averaging about $125/month per person) are given their food money in the form of EBTs (Electronic Benefit Transfers) where funds are deposited automatically into accounts they can draw on with credit card. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income people living in the United States. It is a federal aid program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), though benefits are distributed by each U.S. state's Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services.Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - WikipediaWhy does this make a difference? It gets the government out of the printing and delivery business. Food stamps used to be printed by the same people who print our money, the US Bureau of Printing and Engraving. This was done to prevent counterfeiting and fraud. Then, the stamps were delivered to each household by the US Post Office. Again, government workers doing the delivery, which cost more money. Now, private contractors set up systems to transfer the money directly into participant’s accounts. This is efficient, involves less government bureaucracy (which you’d think Republicans would approve of), and allows people to receive their benefits promptly. It has the added benefit of allowing people who need assistance to buy food in grocery stores without automatically revealing to everyone that they’re on government assistance. A small thing, but it preserves people’s dignity.Do we need to preserve the dignity of poor people, some might ask? Think about who receives SNAP benefits. There are currently somewhere around 41 million Americans on SNAP. Many of them (57%) are working at full or part time jobs, but simply can’t earn enough to feed their families due to the low wages they are paid. Many of them are children, who need to eat well in order to thrive, to do well in school and be healthy. Many of them are military families, who have a member serving in the armed forces and still don’t get paid enough to put food on the table. Many of them are elderly or disabled and cannot work. Does this mean they have no pride? Of course not. Many people who receive SNAP are homeless. Where will their boxes be delivered? What will they do with them?MYTH: You are required to work in order to apply for SNAP benefits.FACT: SNAP requires people to register for work, participate in employment or workfare programs (if referred by the State), not reject a suitable job offer, and not voluntarily quit a job. Work requirements typically do not apply to people with children 6 years old or younger; people with disabilities; senior citizens; and in certain areas in some States. Your SNAP worker will tell you which work requirements apply to you.https://www.usich.gov/resources/uploads/asset_library/myths-homeless.pdfThe proposal in President Trump’s budget is inefficient and wasteful. It will force SNAP beneficiaries who receive more than $90 a month (stop for a minute and think about how you would shop on $22.50/week.) to take half of their benefits in the form of USDA Food Boxes. What does this entail? In the first place, lots of carbohydrates.“The packages recipients would be given would not include fresh fruits or vegetables. Instead, according to NPR, the packages would consist of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables."Trump proposes restricting choices for food stamp recipientsIn the second place, it would necessitate the creation of a new bureaucracy to manage the shipping, warehousing, packaging and delivery of these food boxes. It would require a fleet of trucks and drivers, most likely with a GPS tracking system, because that’s how things are done these days. It would require the rental of warehouses, maintenance on the fleet of trucks, salaries for drivers, warehouse workers, managers, data entry people and a host of other new expenses, which would have to come out of the money budgeted for the program, leaving less to actually help people who are hungry and need to eat.Who’s going to administer this? Not the Federal government. SNAP programs are managed on a state by state basis, through federal block grants. this means the creation of 50 individual systems, some of which will work better than others, all of which will represent a drain on already strained state budgets. I mentioned above that the management of EBT accounts is contracted out to private companies. Does anyone else see the possibilities for an enormous boondoggle of underbidding, favoritism and massive pork barrel projects? How is that going to help feed hungry Americans?Do I think changing the way the program currently operates will be a big mistake? No. I think it is a very deliberate attempt to cut benefits to needy Americans, funnel money to private corporations that just received a massive tax cut, and shore up Republican support that is being eroded daily by the man in the white House. The White House’s proposal would reduce government spending on SNAP by $129 billion over the next 10 years. Combined with other proposed changes to the program, the changes would shrink SNAP’s budget by $213 billion over the same amount of time, a 30 percent reduction.Trump proposes restricting choices for food stamp recipientsDo I think it’s a terrible idea. Yes. I do.
Why don't rich people in India build apartments and rent them out as a way to invest money?
Rich people don't necessarily need the rental income, even if they are interested in deriving rental income they would rather build a warehouse and rent that out to corporates instead of sharing their living space with strangers and take the hassles of collecting rent from individuals. This would work out a cheaper investment per square feet and ROI would be much higher comparatively.I know a few people who are already doing this and the business model is pretty lucrative. However your proposal makes sense too but I believe that you will not be able to have complete occupancy for the flats you want to rent out at any given time due to a lot of factors. My recommendation, when buying a property for yourself, think only about the purpose you bought it for and don't try to fit business ideas in it.It's your home where you will come back to after a hard days work and will want to relax in. Same goes for your family, give them the peace and sanctity of a private space.
What 'get rich quick schemes' always seem appealing but always end in failure?
For most people, these:Drop-shipping. You attempt to sell goods you don’t have, and when someone buys your product, you tell the warehouse to send it for you. Products offered by drop-shippers are almost always of low quality and more expensive than merchandise held in stock.Multi-level marketing. Amway, Herbalife, and similar, in which you recruit others to become distributors. This creates a long chain of sellers and resellers, before anything is actually sold to a consumer.Gambling and lotto systems. These sell you methods to beat the house in cards, roulette, craps, or determining winning lotto numbers. Nope, sorry; the house always wins.Medical transcription, coding and billing “from home.” Pay for a course to learn how to transcribe doctor’s notes or issue billings to clients and insurance companies. This actually once was a valid way to make a few bucks, but no more. Transcription, coding and billing are now handled by the “health systems” which either have resources of their own, or otherwise farm it out to off-shore companies.Ecommerce “stores” which equip you to set up your own web site and sell goods. Unless you deal with a niche market and have established customers, this won’t work. No one will see your store.Affiliate marketing. Place a link on your web site to another site which sells something; when someone “clicks through” your link and a sale is made, you get a commission. The problem is that no one sees your site, anyway, so what’s the point?Patenting your “invention.” You pay a firm a lot of money to secure a patent on your device or process. That’s great, you are now “protected.” But no one cares about your invention, so nothing happens.“Flipping” real estate. Buy and fix up an old house, sell it for big bucks. Leave this to the professionals who know the ropes. Your crappy little bungalow in some miserable neighborhood won’t sell for the price you imagine, and will become a rental whose tenants will rip the place to shreds.Mystery Shopping. The gig involves making a small purchase in a store and reporting on the appearance of the store, service level of staff, etc. Although this is an actual industry, the amounts you are paid for the work are usually less than the cost of doing the work. The appeal is psychological, the “mystery shopper” (that would be YOU) gets a nice feeling from being a “spy.” But you’ll lose money.On-Line surveys: There are some companies which are totally legit and in some cases you may see checks of $10 for answering questions about various products and services. But in the long term, you’re talking about “pocket money.” And some of the operators are really trying to SELL you the product or service which is the subject of the survey. That said, I will agree that for certain people, this might be a fun activity with an occasional financial reward. But you’ll never make a living from it.Utility bill auditing. You will be trained to review electric bills, phone bills, etc., to find over-charges or other defects in the bill which result in a refund to the consumer. Your fee is a percentage of the refund or the savings, moving forward. The problem? Finding the customers! In this age of suspicion about disclosure of account information to strangers, that’s a tough deal.Home Inspector. The idea is that home buyers will want a “professional” to inspect a property before agreeing to the sale. And YOU are the pro who will do all the inspecting for hidden or latent defects, etc. You will be given a binder which is tabbed to indicate such things as “Structure,” “Electrical,” “Plumbing,” “Mechanical Systems,” etc. Under each tab will be a lengthy boiler-plate description of what was inspected, most of which is a disclaimer which relieves you, as “inspector,” and the company you represent, from any liability if you “got it wrong.” And you will be encouraged to contact local real estate agents to get referrals. The horrible truth is that most established real estate agents already have “inspectors” on whom they rely. Breaking into this market is nearly impossible.Knock-off franchises. The classic example is machines, near the entrance of stores, which vend a CD movie title upon payment for same. The problem is that this market is already dominated by “Red Box” whose machines are nearly everywhere. There is nothing left for anyone else. Or nothing good, anyway.Otherwise, such things as gyms, pottery throwing, trampoline parks and numerous others sell you a “system” which will make you rich with very little work. No. Just, no.Oddly enough, these business propositions often appear in magazines such as “Entrepreneur.” This is odd because of the promise of great rewards by just “following a system.” That’s not very entrepreneurial, is it?Alternative Medicine, herbal medicine, palm reading, astrology, and similar. The proposal is that you will be educated as to any of these things, so that you may open shop as a “licensed” practitioner of the same, and a member in good standing of the Society of Astrologers (or whatever). Maybe so, but you’ll still need to pony up more bucks to set up a store front, advertise, and do all such other things as it takes to make a buck by fleecing people. If you really believe in astrology, skip the expense and just hang out your shingle.Become a minister or priest. It may be as simple as sending your tuition to some “seminary” which sends you a diploma in return. Now you can marry and bury people, and start a church for big bucks! But guess what? You can do all that stuff on your own.Learn how to code. Sure, go to a “boot camp” and come away as an expert on Ruby on Rails, or whatever. Do you really think so? There are, in fact, legitimate seminars and courses which uplift IT professionals to work with competence using various languages and technologies. However, if you are NOT already an IT pro, be suspicious of anyone who proposes to make you a senior level tech, starting from nothing. That’s all, for now.And that’s enough, don’t you think?
