This story has some graphic details that are hard to take.Drugs and life just evaporated who he was. Not a day goes by where I don’t wonder if I could have done more to save him. The timing was bad and life sometimes gets in the way of your best intentions. My other friends and I made a lot of efforts to “rescue him” but he didn’t want our help and now it’s too late.It started off slowly, partying in the 80’s. Pot and coke were pretty much everywhere at the time particularly because so many of my friends were making really good money. Drugs are a dangerous game, they can get their hooks into you and turn a recreational partier into an addict almost without any warning at all.A lot of my friends and associates smoked pot and/or snorted cocaine in the mid to late 80’s. I lived with a bunch of stock brokers in a high-end apartment building with roof decks right on Boston harbor when I was 25. There were drugs at every party. Most of my friends eventually gave up that lifestyle, many have become uber successful, hedge fund manager, CFO, CEO, CTO, VP, investment banker, entrepreneur are the titles that most of them hold now.Sadly not everyone was able to walk away from the partying and for one friend, probably my best friend ever, it devoured his life. While I was away serving in the military in the 90’s what seemed like a little bit of a problem turned into a monster and his life spun so far out of control it became unrecognizable. I don’t think anyone really knew how bad it had become (he lost many jobs, his career went down in flames, he was sometimes on the verge of being homeless or living in terrible places) but as you grow into your thirties and beyond it’s hard to take care of your buddies or monitor what they are doing while you’re raising a family and running your own business. I had the additional issue of distance.I blame myself to some degree. My friends and I enabled him on some level. We have a lot of exceedingly successful friends in our inner circle and many of us have been friends since grade school. Two of the guys I grew up with have net worths in the high 8 or low 9 figure range. Because a lot of us had surplus discretionary money my friend was able to get bailed out repeatedly. It’s really no ones fault because no one really had the full picture until it’s too late.How did we enable him? The list is pretty long. If you have eight to ten people with money in your life you can ask for a lot of favors before people start to put it together that you’re in so much trouble or such a bad place.Phone is turned off, wire him money.Going to be evicted, pay off his back rent.No place to live go stay at a friends house for a month and when he leaves realize your antique rolex left with him.Out of work, give him a job.The list goes on and on. His brothers and parents were also helping him. Not all of us live near where he was living anymore and guys being guys we didn’t always stay in contact or share the fact that we’ve given him money. If you can get help 4-5 times a year for a decade you might still only be hitting each person 3-4 times in a ten year span. The help I gave him personally was nothing in the grand scheme of life, maybe 5k total.How bad did it get? So bad it makes me want to cry. A decade ago things were coming to a head. One of my other best friends called me one day and said we needed to have an intervention for “C”. I was living 2300 miles from that intervention so I didn’t go but we had a conference call with all the guys we knew who were keeping him afloat and laid out some ground work. The two wealthiest guys in our circle of friends had already arranged a spot at a very expensive rehab facility. I think it was around 10k a week 10 years ago. They held the intervention in the conference room of one of the businesses they own and 6 of our friends and one of his brothers were there.They had a contract for him to sign and a pledge from all of us that there would be no more support until he got some help or agreed to let us help him. We even agreed that we would stop taking his calls if he refused, in order to put pressure on him to go to rehab and also show solidarity.We wanted him to agree to never go back to where he had been staying. This guy was close to being a model, his girlfriends typically looked like they fell off the cover of playboy and he was shacked up with this hideous 200 lb crack addict in a place that had rats. I suggested we all chip in and get him an apartment after he got out of rehab so at least he would have a safe place to stay in a better environment. Nothing worked out as planned.He flipped out and started cursing at everyone at the intervention, then he simply left. He called me as he was driving away. I told him I was fully on board with the rest of the guys and I wouldn’t be helping him or taking any more calls. He was fuming at two of the guys in the intervention and tried to make excuses and say it wasn’t that bad. I told him he needed to step back and consider all the things we had been through together and did he really think any of us would do anything that didn’t have his best interest at heart. He didn’t want to hear it.The reality is it was far worse than he or anyone else knew. This happened on a Wednesday. On Thursday night according to all the information ever gathered he either tried to rip off a drug dealer, got caught cheating at cards in a place frequented by organized crime figures or else his gambling debts caught up with him. No one knows for sure but we’ve heard he was possibly involved in all three things so who can be sure. Does it even matter? He was living a very dangerous lifestyle and something was bound to catch up to him eventually.I got the call on Friday.“C is in the hospital, we don’t think he’s going to live.”“What? I just talked to him on Wednesday, what happened?”“Someone cracked his face open with pipe or bat, doused him in acetone, set him on fire and then he either jumped or was pushed him off a bridge onto the Amtrak train rails.” Picture any one of those things happening to someone you know and love. My heart kind of imploded in that moment. It felt like being stabbed. So close to rehab and this happens.They left him for dead. I assume no one would have thought he was likely to survive particularly passing out on train tracks.His cheek and skull were fractured, his eyeball was dangling out of his head, he had 3rd degree burns on virtually everywhere his shirt was covering plus his neck, side of his face and his upper thighs.He didn’t die physically that night, but the guy I knew since the 4th grade definitely died. He evaporated in that fire. I’ve never had a conversation with him since here he was even really lucid. He calls me at 3 am typically, I sometimes can’t answer because the conversations leave me shaken and close to physically ill. Sometimes he tells me the FBI or CIA is following him, sometimes he’s just been released from jail after being picked up as a vagrant or some disturbing the peace charge. Sometimes he unloads some weird theory about one minority or another, weird racist propaganda type stuff. Every conversation is heartbreaking. I always wonder what I could have done to prevent this from being his path.It’s an awful feeling, I have to compartmentalize it at times or it would probably make me fall into depression. The shell of the person I would have risked my life to save is out in the world and the world is abusing him at every turn. He’s been arrested dozens of times so how do you suspect the police treat him when they run his name through the computer? He’s frequently staying in places where he’s a target because he’s basically mentally disabled and people can victimize him in a lot of different ways. His face never fully healed despite dozens of surgeries he went from being a guy that women swoon over to a distorted frankenstein’esque character that probably scares children when they look at him too closely. His left eye is lower than his right and he has a significant amount of scarring on his hands, arms, neck and face.He’s in and out of institutions and halfway houses. He doesn’t always take the medication he’s on and when he doesn’t he has some potential for violence. He’s called me hours after he was mugged and his sneakers were stolen because he’s likely wandering into areas where drugs are available. He spent 3 hours telling me how his mom used to rape him as a child once. I’ve known him a long time and know his mom well. This doesn’t seem possible and I feel like I would know or at least his two brothers would know but it’s horrible to hear all the same. I owned a town home with this guy at one time, we’ve pulled each other out of bar fights and driven cross country to see each other. If he had murdered someone I think he would have told me. He was like my brother.I’m a fighter, I’ve faced down guns and knives in my life and I lay awake at night sometimes wondering how it would have been different if I was with him on that bridge. It haunts me when I fixate on it for too long and even writing this post makes my eyes well up.There’s even a guy I knew 35 years ago who apparently knows something about what happened to him. He said something cryptic that implied C had it coming when he saw one of my other friends in a restaurant a few months after the bridge. I’ve frequently mulled over the idea of going back home and taking that guy out by the reservoir for a long talk. I’m older and wiser than I was in my 20’s and my kids or wife would not understand if I went to jail to try and fix something that can’t be fixed. Nothing I do can bring back the guy I knew, it’s too late and I’ll never know if I could have done something or said something different to change the outcome. I guess that’s how life is sometimes.

The ANC introduced the Outcomes Based Education (OBE) a simple, logical outcome base approach used by people every day. Knowing what you want to achieve, the outcome is visualized in the mind and steps are taken to accomplish the result. Perhaps it’s a system to hide the stupid with the clever in groups and score all the same. The system worked, the standard of education dropped. Students became lazier and depended on the intelligent ones to work extra hard thereby ensuring that nobody in the group failed.As the education standard worsened under the ANC, the pass rates dropped to keep the deception alive. Subjects were introduced into the grade one curriculum, teaching small children, life orientation, all about HIV, sex and shifting away from the importance of reading, writing and simple arithmetic.Maths was a problem, and the ANC introduced maths literacy, which practically labels math a substandard subject. A subject that answered the question, and not stimulating the young mind to think. Even so, the pass rate was still underachieved.The changes were a conspiracy to hide the disaster taking place in South African schools and implement liberation before education. Burning down of schools, rioting and non-delivery of textbooks proved how dangerous the ANC government was. The general education quality was ranked at number 146 out of 148 countries. It also trained paramedics and nurses.Since 1970 the budget for black education was raised by about 30% per year every year. More than any other government department.In the period 1955 -1984 the amount of black school students increased 31 times from 35,000 to 1,096 000.65% of black South African children were at school compared to Egypt 64%, Nigeria 57%, Ghana52%, Tanzania50% and Ethiopia 29%.Amongst the adults of South Africa, 71% could read and write (80% between the ages 12 and 22). Compare this to Kenya 47%, Egypt 38%, Nigeria 34% and Mozambique at 26%.In South Africa, the whites built 15 new classrooms for blacks every working day, every year. At 40 children per class it meant space for an additional 600 black students every day!!!In 1985 there were 42,000 Blacks at 5 universities in South Africa, about the same amount at the universities of the homelands.In an article called Die Afrikaner 11 Feb 1987, the quarterly magazine called Vox Africana Nr 29 4/87 stated that,South Africa had 4,8 million whites and 18,2 million blacks in 1987. In 1965 the economic growth of South Africa was the second highest in the world at 7,9%. The rate of inflation was a mere 2% per annum and the prime interest rate only 3% per annum. Domestic savings were so great that South Africa needed no foreign loans for normal economic expansion.Even Lord Deedes admitted, White South Africa grew to become the economic giant of the continent, the other members of the Commonwealth virtually sank into poverty.At the hight of Apartheid in 1978 Soweto had 115 football fields, 3 Rugby fields, 4 athletic tracks, 11 Cricket fields, 2 Golf courses, 47 Tennis courts, 7 swimming pools built to Olympic standards, 5 Bowling alleys, 81 Netball fields, 39 children play parks, and countless civic halls, movie houses and clubhouses.In addition to this, Soweto had 300 churches, 365 schools, 2 Technical Colleges, 8 clinics, 63 child day care centres, 11 Post Offices, and its own fruit and vegetable market.There were 2300 registered companies that belonged to black businessmen, about 1000 private taxi companies. 3% of the 50,000 vehicle owners in 1978 were Mercedes Benz owners. Soweto alone had more cars, taxis, schools, churches and sport facilities than most independent countries in Africa. The Blacks of South Africa had more private vehicles than the entire white population of the USSR at the time.Today Soweto has modern shopping malls like, Dobsonville Shopping Centre. In 2005 the Protea Gardens Mall opened. This was followed by the Baramall Shopping Centre and the Jabulani Shopping complex and the Maponya Mall. Experts say that Soweto has as much as 25% oversupply of retail space.The Canadian Medical Doctor, Dr Kenneth Walker wrote about Soweto, (I freely translate from Verrat an Sdafrika, Klaus Vaque, 1987,pg 41)In Soweto I saw many homes that costs about $100,000 (1978) and that had a BMW in the driveway. All houses are single storey. Many are recently painted. Many had flowerpots in the windows and lawn in the front. Only 2% were shacks. If I had the choice to live in Soweto or in the apartment dwellings or Projects of New York, Chicago, or Detroit where there is so much crime, then I would not hesitate for one moment and choose Soweto.The biggest hospital in the world, Baragwanath with 3200 beds and at its peak almost 8000 staff had 23 operation theatres fitted out with the most modern medical equipment that existed in the world. Blacks were treated here, operated on...at full state costs to the white-taxpayers for unlimited periods. The budget of this hospital was and is higher than the yearly budget of most small member states of the United Nations.Next door to Baragwanath is the St. Johns Eye Clinic. The clinic is world famous for the treatment of Glaucoma, Cataracts, traumatic eye injuries and rare tropical diseases. All built and maintained by white taxpayers money for blacks.Baragwanath in 1978 employed 450 medical doctors in full-time service. It treated 112 000 in-patients and 1.62 million out-patients per year. The children and infant death rate with 34.8 per 1000 was lower than Harlem in New York.In 1982 alone, this hospital performed 898 heart operations of world quality.Ironically...90% of the blood donors for this hospital were whites, who donated blood free of charge, totally voluntarily...to save black lives. Today blacks are destroying all the infrastructure that we paid for and built. Then still has the audacity to tell whites they should leave.What I want to know is who are going to compensate whites for all the schools, hospitals, dams, airports, harbours, railroads, etc that they have built? It is high time for blacks to start paying whites. Nothing is for free.Bishop Tutu and De Vos can start by selling their mansions and BMWs and give it to the poor white fund of Solidarity Helpende Hand.
