Why did China only take a month to bring COVID-19 under control while our states suffer so much for so long?I am a Dutchman living in China. I was here throughout the entire outbreak and still am. I have witnessed the rise and the fall of covid19 in China.There are many who question the numbers of the CCP. If the same people don't question the numbers of their own government's they are either affected by their own propaganda, naive, or both. No government has a special looking glass to tell the exact numbers.What I CAN tell you is that CCP took some extreme (by western standards) steps all along the way to ensure the country would get through the ordeal. These steps include strict quarantine, social health codes, mandatory masks and others. The country went into lockdown and slowly started reopening after about 6 weeks.None of these step have been taken by western government to the same degree as they have here for various feeble reasons: “masks don't work,” “social distancing is fake new,” “we have rights…” China has taken these steps and they work. Get that through your head!I have been travelling through China for the past 2 months without issues. Events have started to take place again and life is back to normal.When a risk is spotted, like a surge in cases, the CCP swiftly takes action to quash it. The CCP puts the benefits of the many over the sacrifice of the few. That's their way and it works. Mind you, a surge in USA is considered to be 50k new infections in a day. In China, a surge is considered more than 2 new infections in a day.Hope governments around the world start waking up soon to smell the coffee, because this global pandemic is making a mockery of you!Update July 27: Just want to add some things I have read in the comments which I particularly connected with.Like Carl and Francois stated, the lock down process was very peaceful. No military or police involvement, but the rules were clear and followed by everyone (well…. lets says 99.9% of everyone). Procedures were clear, for example, you couldn't leave your house but you still have to eat, so we make sure you can order groceries straight to your doorstep.Some people have argued that there was no sacrifice, as its a necessity. Although I understand the underlying feeling. There are always multiple approaches to resolving a problem. Although the Chinese approach has been the most effective until now, it has come with side effects such as citizens from certain regions being deemed second rate citizens and great restrictions of freedom. Furthermore families have been split apart for months with members being spread across the world, or even just in another province.

How did it suddenly disappear?I understand lots of Americans doubt the number because it sounds too good too soon to be true but I don't think any person in China watching it will doubt it.Here is my answer for my friends:I think the number is relatively TRUSTWORTHY. They’ve tried everything they can to find out cases, and they’ve reported everything they know at this moment. It’s much closer to truth than countries without sufficient testing capacity.CCP is trying their best to make the whole thing transparent, they’ve been investigating the local government about potential misfeasance. And they’ve reassigned a few local officials. Their act over the outbreak won people’s trust of the nation.They have adenovirus vaccines under experiments. But not yet under mass manufacturing or on the market.It didn't disappeared SUDDENLY. Everyone in China has been strictly staying at home for two months. That’s how it’s contained. We watched the number of new cases increased day by day, then at some point it finally started to drop, little by little it became zero.How did they contained the virus?For patients:(TEST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE) They developed enough test kits in a short time. So basically everyone with potential exposure is tested. (not just severe case, every case like those asymptomatic NBA players too) And they track where someone got infected and where has he been. (It’s very common in Asian countries to track their routes)(TREAT ALL) They built two massive hospitals with 6500 negative pressure wards to treat people with severe symptoms.(ADMIT ALL) They build countless temporary hospitals using stadium etc. to put ALL the patients with mild symptoms. So they won't be self-isolated at home. (potentially infect family and the society)(QUARANTINE ALL) They got lots of hotels to quarantine people who had been to hot spot like workers for the hospital in Wuhan, medical staffs working on the frontline (hospitality and food are all delivered and free). And everyone has been contacted with confirmed cases.(STRICT STANDARDS FOR DISCHARGE) Patients need to be tested negative TWICE to be discharged. Even after they are sent home, they're still required to be quarantined at home for 14 days. And they are still closely monitored health conditions by community workers.(FREE) Testing and treatment are all FREE, paid by the government. So everyone are willing to be tested and treated.For non-patients:(POLICY) They ordered all the people to stay at home. Especially in Wuhan, you are not allowed to step out of your house, food will be delivered (without any contact) to your door. All public transportation is stopped. At some point, it’s compulsory for all the people to wear masks to get out of the house. Before you get in anywhere, grocery store, pharmacy, your apartment, your temperature will be tested. If you bought any drug for cold/flu, you will be monitored.(COMMUNITY) In some provinces, community workers will knock your door, test everyone’s temperature once or twice EVERY DAY. Everyone lives in like an apartment complex (like a little community), in my province, you are not allowed in if you don’t live there, and your temperature needs to be tested every time you enter your apartment complex. If your temperature is abnormal, you need to be tested for covid-19, it’s compulsory.(AWARENESS) Everyone really stays at home, and they wear masks to go anywhere mostly the grocery store, pharmacy etc., only very few people are allowed in the store at the same time, and they are apart at least six feet when waiting in line to get in. And the store checks your temperature before you get in. They pay by their phones scanning QR code(Alipay, WeChat pay) no cash, no card, no contact. And lots of people if they went outside, they don’t take their clothes in their house. Most people won’t walk their dogs or take a walk. Their dogs are quarantined with them too! (Some places community workers will walk your dog for you, so you don’t need to leave your house)(MEDIA, EXPERTS AND OFFICIALS) Media and medical experts educate people well how to protect themselves. And people’s awareness is well raised. Everyone is exaggeratedly careful. Like if you brought some groceries to your grandparent, she won’t open the door for you.(INFORMATION) Information are clear and up-to-date. How many cases are conformed, how many in your community, where have they been are all disclosed to public. So everyone could closely monitor their own situation at home with precautions and without panic.(HEALTH CODE) In some cities, health code has now been applied to track people’s health, and help people back to work. You will be given green/yellow/red code based on your data. Green means you can travel/take subways etc. Yellow means you need to quarantine for 7 days, red means 14 days. If you leave your house without green code, related authorizations will be notified.Medical resources:(MEDICAL STAFF) Thousands of doctors and nurses volunteered to go to the hot spot in the Hubei province(where Wuhan belongs to). Every other province takes care of one city in Hubei. So they have enough doctors.(EXPERIENCED SIMILAR OUTBREAK) They have been through SARS in 2003, so they responded very fast to this similar outbreak, they’ve adopted similar measures used in 2003, like building massive hospitals for infectious diseases in a very short time which are taken over by well-trained, disciplined army.(CLINICAL EXPERIENCE) They have lots of cases, and medical staffs share all their experiences of treating covid-19. So when they face new patients, they know what to do.(MANUFACTURING) At that time, it was spring festival in China (like Christmas, new year, thanksgiving combined) everyone traveled back home, so it spread very rapidly and all the factories are closed. After the outbreak, lots of factories manufacturing medical supplies are back to work. They hired workers with a higher price and expanded their manufacturing to suit the frontline’s need. And all Chinese people from mainland China and overseas are donating supplies and money. At this moment, they are no longer short of most supplies and I heard they started to help some other countries as well.(Using drones to tell people stay at home)(you need to scan the QR code to fill some information lots of places like if you’ve been to Wuhan)(Taxis has protection film between drivers and passengers)(On the map, you can see where those confirmed cases have been)(Detect abnormal temperature using AI image recognition and infrared sensor at the stations)I know lots of Americans see this number suspicious especially those who already have a bias against the Chinese government.But everyone in China is fighting for this battle, and everyone is watching closely to this. If the government covered up anything, 1.3 billion people are the first to notice and judge them. Trust me, we are mean as hell. Everyone literally stays at home for two months, they've experienced how the government/everyone handles this problem. The virus has been the only thing they care about for a few months now. (THEY KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON)In the meantime, the government really wants to build trust among Chinese people who apparently very judgmental and strict. They judge everything not perfectly done by the government. So the government is under lots of risks to cover this up. Especially the internet is fast nowadays, with 1.3 billion people staying at home on the internet monitoring the whole situation. And their families are working on the frontline telling them what’s happening. It's safe to say, people know every information they want to know. 1.3 billion people’s anger is horrible. The government’s priority is not looking good internationally, but to satisfy its 1.3 billion population who live on its land. Chinese government is to serve its people. It’s well recognized in Chinese society. Therefore they need to be extremely careful, responsible and reasonable. They need to do what people want them to, and the whole Chinese culture is really emphasizing what’s ethically right. And It’s very strict (I hate it sometimes, but in this circumstance it can be a good trait)For example, their standards for going back to work is: after national alert lifted, this city has no new cases for 14 days. One or two weeks ago, my province(100millilon population, next to the province had the outbreak) has no new cases for 12 days, the capital of our province (10 million population) has no new cases for 19 days. All of a sudden, a new case appeared. Everyone and the police were so confused, wondering where did he get that, where has he been. He wouldn't tell, he said he just stayed at home, went to work and everything, but apparently his city is almost virus-free at that time. Until the police pulled out his travel history. He went to Europe to watch a soccer game a few days ago. He had been to Abu Dhabi, France and Italy. Everyone in our province was so angry at him, he definitely became famous on the internet. The government quarantined all the people he contacted with and shut the city back down. Lots of people are very mad at him because of the financial loss. Every major earthquake or wildfire since I was born. Here are two possible reasons: 1. Chinese people are very united. And they are willing to sacrifice. (Traditional culture) 2. The government has the ability to assign all resources from the whole country. They’re fast and responsible.As all public transportation has stopped. Some villages even dig up the road to prevent entrance.(which is not praised by the central government, but well praised by the internet, because it’s so hilarious)But every community’s entrance is under control by whoever is responsible. It’s really a team effort by everyone in China. Right now I live in a huge student apartment in the US, and US currently has more cases than China at that time, but the management team they don’t care who is in and out everyday. In China, they will be testing everyone’s temperature, and only allow the residents in.Chinese people sound over-reacted. But it worked. It probably won’t work that well in lots of other countries where they don’t have the culture, capacity and the ability to act like this and suffer so much of economy loss.Not all people from all cultures are rule-followers and willing to strictly stay at home. Some people are more liberal and have a strong willing to get out of the house and socialize. It can be a good thing at most of the time, but not this moment when facing a very contagious virus.As you can see, most people in US wearing masks are Asian people. Not because they are sick, it's because they're told to do so, and they listen.The cases in US are gonna top China’s overall number in 3 days. And it's still growing exponentially, has no sign of slowing down. I really hope at this moment the government could do something, and people could stay at home to contain the virus. It's never a one-man’s job, it's everyone’s responsibility. If the curve couldn't be flattened, at some point, the health system is going to collapse. The death rate will raise. It has been three days since the first time I answered this question. Today US’s cases surpassed China’s as I expected. This is very very sad. New York seems to experience the exact same thing happened in Wuhan, maybe even worse. Just based on the data, I don't think it would stop in April. Trump’s beautiful miracle seems very less likely to happen.I’ve been strictly quarantined myself for two weeks now. Among these days, a few people asked me to hang out(none of them are Chinese), some even said:”I’ve literally been out everyday for the past three months, nothing happened. I’d rather go outside, have some exercise everyday, it’d make me healthier.” He had his point, but if everyone thinks this way, it would be a disaster. Nothing happened could just be nothing happened yet. This is survival bias. I feel the main difference between China and western countries is people’s mindset.I just had a phone call with my mom, I used her credit card, so she knew I went to the grocery store(I usually do delivery). She was very nervous, she asked me:”Were there lots of people in the store? Did you wear masks? Did everyone wear masks? If there is getting worse, please come back China.”There weren’t lots of people. I live in a college town, as school closed, the city is half-empty now. No, not everyone wears masks, all Chinese are wearing masks, but no Americans were wearing masks. (For multiple reasons, Americans don’t believe in masks.)My parents has been back to work for two weeks. My city hasn’t had any cases for more than a month now. But my mom told me, people are still following strict rules, everyone is still told to wear masks, she went to an government agency one day, she ran into a guy without a mask, the security didn’t allow him in, because he didn’t wear any masks. My mom also told me, she and my dad’s companies gave every employee two boxes of masks for free, they have to wear them to work. I kind of feel they are a little over-reacted, but maybe over-reacting helps the virus from spreading. Better than downplay it.In the end, much respect for people working on the frontline. Had family members worked frontline both in 2003 SARS and 2020 COVID-19. I know as their family, how worried we were. Especially at this moment, I heard doctors and nurses in New York don’t even have enough protection. Medical staffs in the nation working under huge danger some already got infected. They have family too, under the white coat, they are just normal people like you and me, they are just a bunch of kids pretending they’re not scared, because they need to save lives. I hope Donald Trump or whoever is responsible can really do his job to protect those people who are protecting him, protecting us, protecting this country.

Unlike in Western democracy, where different parties take power, the Chinese probably sees the government as THE ‘Leadership’ with the mandate to rule the nation. The CCP is controlling a meritocratic bureaucracy that runs the nation. They know there is factionalism within CCP, but most would not think they know better about the complex business of governance nor the ability to choose the leaders needed. Perhaps apolitical, but what the people respect and expect would be for the 90 million strong party to choose the right cadre of leaders with strength, competence and effectiveness - and to deliver good results, and fairly for the whole nation.
