It would depend on the disposition of your deployment and the billet you are filling.Normally, you deploy with a unit that has a particular rotation schedule and disposition. Basically, you are part of the whole endeavor…moving in, and moving out…together.However, if you have a sort of unique or individual deployment order, and you get into a billet where there is a bit of discretion…both for you, or your commander (both in theater, or your stateside garrison commander), then yes, you could possibly request an extension.

Yeah. Twice.The first time was after my first divorce. I was seriously cash strapped, had moved out with basically nothing, had to quit the startup that was really taking off, it was a complete reboot. I managed to hang on to two custom 1911s, but everything else was sold to fund day-to-day operations.That wasn’t terribly painful, it was necessary.The second time was just before I married my current wife. She had a bunch of ground rules for “no X around the kids” and guns were square in the middle of that.I wound up selling everything, down to the bare walls, including ammo and accessories.At the time, it seemed like the right thing to do. At the time, it might have been the right thing to do. It certainly added a large amount of gravitas to the relationship, signs of commitment on my part that couldn’t be ignored.Looking back, I’m less persuaded that embracing a knee-jerk “no, just no” position was the right thing to do. There was room for a dialog, for gun safety education, for me parking the safe with a friend…Didn’t seem so at the time, though.No lasting regrets over the disposition of the arsenal, just over the thought process that made it possible.

A call we laughed about for months.A couple were having an affair. Were doing it, as he drove, on a back road, too fast. She was impaled on him, squeezed into his lap, between the wheel and him. When he came, he lost control of the car, rolled it.It crushed the car in on, around them, canning them up in place, very explicitly together. Yet amazingly, did not cause serious injury.The car was so crushed, despite using jaws of life, air bag, metal saws, it took some time to get them out, with out hurting them in the process.This was not a one unit response, but multiple squads, many EMS personnel turned to. A mutual aid call, as our Squad was already fully committed, other than my unit.Now these two were notorious in the county for thinking, they were better, smarter, more good looking then every one else. And they treated their spouses horribly.They had snuck around for years. Now they were literally nailed. The accident photo ended up in our local paper, front page.. Both names included as victims in the accident.And of course the back story, not Included in the article, how the car went out of control, was supplied by all the spectators, and EMS to friends and family, who gathered, as we worked to extricate the lovers.Small county. Everybody came from families that had arrived in the 1600 to 1700s. If you didnt arrive then, your progeny were branded, “Foreigner.”I was a “foreigner”, arriving in the early 1970s. But being female, and in emergency medicine, and saving their family members, and friends, I was accepted fairly readily. “Foreign” men were never truly accepted, merely tolerated, and held at arms length.It was this kind of really tight community. Every one was cheering inside, even publically, that this smug couple was caught.Maybe God was a little sick.of them too. Horrid accident, but no real injuries. It aimed a spot light on what had been hidden in the dark.It was hard not to laugh. They weren't really hurt. And we took pains to cover their naughty bits, from gawkers. But karma bites. Oh, it was so good!.Their long suffering spouses finally divorced the pair, and went on to find really good people, to marry later.Both of the cheats left the county. I moved out of state later myself. So do not know their final disposition.But boy, couldn't have happened to better pair.
