What are some situations in which you regret being a girl?

I am pursuing Electrical Engineering. It was MY choice to get into this field. I find it very very fascinating.1) The first time I shared the thought of choosing this field with my 'professors' their first reaction was "Why do you want to go into that field? It's a MAN'S field. Ladkiyon k liye nahi hai. IT ya Computer lo. Office job hota hai. AC mein baithna."2)Whenever meeting people, the first or definitely the second would be "Kya karte ho beta?"Me: *proudly* Electrical EngineeringUncle/ Aunty: Electrical kyu ki beta :O ?To which my mum would proudly add almost always "pehle to ye mechanical lena wali thi. Badi mushkil se roka ise."Me: *trying to fake a smile and not lash out at them because I am a girl and it would be inappropriate and lack of manarism becasue "Log kya kahenge"* Because I love it. Computer IT mein nahi jana tha.3) During the 6th semester I went to the training and placement cell of our college to ask about the core companies that come for hiring electrical engineers. What I came to know was truly heart breaking. Core companies like GNFC and GSFC do not hire female electrical engineers job because it is not a girl's cup of tea and they won't be able to do the job. They hire girls from branches like IT and Computer. *WTF moment*4) Whenever I want go out and literally ask for permission *even at the age of 22* the first question my parents would ask is "Ladkiyan kitni hongi? Hum rokenge nahi apko jane se par ladkiyan zada honi chahiye."5) My mom giving me a lecture on how and why not to go out with male friends because "log kya kahenge. Apko koi farak nai padta hoga par baki log dekhte hain or fir sau kahaniyan banate hain."6) Whenever I am sad, and share my thoughts and feelings with my mother, she would say ao many nice and heart warming things. But her last sentence would ruin it all. "Friends banao naye. Main bhi chahti hu aap bahar jao. Ghumo. 'FEMALE' friends banao naye jinke saath aap walk pe ja sako baatein kar sako."*How do I make her understand that most girls I have come across have been bitches. I am not very fond of a girl's company. All they do is stalk boys in the most irritating manner, talk unnecessary things, watch daily soaps, drool over daily soap actors in the most annoying way, don't respect other men and give me stupid advice on how to maintain my ego in front of a man just because I am girl, when there so much other cool stuff to talk about and do!*7) When people keep saying "patli hojao. Warna baad mein shadi nahi hogi." *Yep I am fat*What happened to all that "you judge a person by his or her inner nature" philosophy?8) The fact that whenever I have to go out with a male friend I can't ask my parents because that would be a complete no. So I have cover my face with a dupatta, well because I am a girl and if any of my parents' collegues or friend saw me, they would straight away tell them and because log kya kahenge.Ah. I wish I were a boy.PS. Ironically, I have to go anonymous because I am girl and if anybody finds out that I wrote all this, my freedom would be taken away and because log kya kahenge.

What is your review of Ashoka University?

[Update: I wrote the original version in my first year. I have now updated the answer wherever required, since it seems to have helped a lot of my juniors. Also, a lot of people asked me this question on personal messages: I am NOT paid by my University to write this answer. They probably don’t even know of its existence.]Aha!Its that time of the year again when so many parents and students ask such questions on Quora, and wonder whether or not Ashoka is a good place to be in, and more importantly, a good place for them to be in.I am a first [edit: second] year undergraduate at Ashoka University. And unlike a lot of others here, I know what my major is going to be - Computer Science. I joined Ashoka after a lot of research, and even a lot more apprehension because most people I spoke to hadn’t heard of Ashoka. But now that I am here, I will try to write the most honest answer I can, resting aside all biases.ProsThe Student Body - The admission process to Ashoka is very stringent, and a student requires not just good academics, but also decent co-curriculars to get in. The Admissions team has been doing a wonderful job too. And so, the quality of students at Ashoka is simply great! Every student is intimidated by the amount of talent around them, while being extremely talented themselves. The Faculty - You probably know that one of the USPs of Ashoka is its amazing faculty. We have faculty members who are alumni of Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and other such prestigious universities around the world. But apart from all that jazz, the administration takes student feedback very seriously. Visiting professors, even if they are from Institutes as prestigious as IIT Delhi (and we have regularly had such professors, especially for CS), are not employed for subsequent semesters if student feedback for them is not good. Our Campus/Infrastructure - We have a world class infrastructure. Really. No kidding. I swear. Our hostel rooms, our classrooms, the indoor sports complex, our library, open fields—everything. The maintenance teams have a huge role to play in this, and they constantly do a wonderful job.(New point added) The Model of Education - This is something unmatched, at least in India. In my 2 years at Ashoka, I have never had to rote learn, not even once. I was made to write a research paper in my very first semester. Our grading is through essays, research papers, creative projects, individual and group presentations, class quizzes, assignments and exams. After two years here, I feel this is the best aspect about Ashoka—the way we are taught.Other Stuff -Even though we are a bit away from Delhi, we don’t have transportation problems. There is a free of cost shuttle service which drops you to the nearest metro station (Jahangirpuri, yellow line). We have a lot of clubs and societies. So many that it becomes difficult for us to decide which ones to join. Further, each student has his/her right to start a new club or society whenever they want.Student-teacher interaction - We often find ourselves sitting and having meals with our professors and we talk about much more than just academics. Apart from that, the Masters students, YIFs and the UGs share the same facilities. So, we are in constant touch with them, and sometimes have great conversations with them too.We regularly have a lot of talks and speeches by eminent guest speakers. There are times when it becomes difficult to decide which ones to attend because they coincide. The different centres we have. Centre for Writing and Communication, Centre for Entrepreneurship, Trivedi Centre for Political Data, Centre for Sexuality and Gender Studies and other such centres work closely with the students and help us with the much needed experience of working with professionals.Other than the mess, we have many other (very reasonable) food outlets on campus. So you’ll find yourself not knowing where to have your meals on a daily basis.I could go on and on. But the cons now. Oh and it could be possible that some other universities would quickly ask me to delete this part of the answer. But (as cheesy as it sounds) I am at Ashoka. ;)ConsThe size of the campus - Our campus is not very large, its just 25 acres in area. And so, it does not give us a feel of a University. But then, it makes us a closer family, so its not much of a problem. Edit: with the batch of 2020 coming in, common spaces have now started feeling a bit crowded. The Popularity - Lets face it, all of us want to go to popular universities, and fairly so. Ashoka is not very popular among the masses right now. But the rapidity with which its gaining popularity is surprising. Being just 3 years old, its doing very well on that front and we believe that it’ll be one of the best in India very very soon.No Placement Record - We do not have any placement record for the undergraduates, since the founding batch is currently in its third year. Since we have an option of the fourth year for them, we might not have proper placement data until 2018. But, we are expecting good placements, going on the YIF placement record. Edit: out of 136 or so students graduating in 2017, around 120 are staying back for the optional 4th year. Out of the rest, 2 got placed in Citibank, 2 got admission into prestigious Grad Schools in Europe and 1 got into IIM-A.Being a new university, things are yet to be in place, its a work in progress. There are things that go wrong, but we learn from our mistakes (by “we”, I refer not just to the students but to the Ashoka Family as a whole). Personally, I don’t consider this a con, because we are able to be a part of the all important process of laying the foundation of the University. Edit: Personally, I got the opportunity to be able to ideate on and organise the first inter-varsity sports fest of Ashoka this year. I’m sure most students here have had similar experiences. The fees - Ashoka is undoubtedly quite expensive. But it does not give up on student quality in favour of money. The University offers need based financial aid. This means that the fees is never a hindrance for a student to join Ashoka. If a student is good enough to be here, he/she is given financial aid upto 100%. I know people who are on 100% scholarship. In fact, more than 50% of us are on some percentage of financial aid.All in all, I am extremely happy to be here, and don’t regret my decision one bit. If not Ashoka, I would have been in some engineering college in India, and I am glad that I didn’t go to any. I have friends in the most prestigious engineering colleges, but they aren’t enjoying studying there.Don’t hesitate from contacting me for any kind of help (especially CS majors will likely have a lot of questions about the degree and all. I have researched on that enough).Hope this helped! Hope to see you at Ashoka soon :DEdit: If you have been accepted to Ashoka’s UG batch of 2021, please join this Facebook group to interact with seniors and other applicants—Log into Facebook | Facebook
