Lying by omissionThe WaPo article claims that “…incidents of communal violence — such as riots between religious communities — and has data that shows such incidents rose 28 percent between 2014 and 2017.”This is based on data presented, during Lok Sabha sessions, on communal violence in India.6 Feb 20188 Aug 2017And it is indeed technically true. In 2014, there were 644 recorded incidents of communal violence resulting in 95 deaths and 1921 injuries. The comparable figures for 2017 are 822 incidents (28%), 111 deaths (+17%), and 2384 injuries (+24%).But what about the past?Here is a similar dataset from another discussion in LS on 10 Aug 2010.The figures for 2008, when the INC was in power are 943 incidents, 167 deaths, 2354 injuries. And while we are just randomly selecting years, I choose the year 2014 when the present government came into power. Compared to 2014, the 2008 stats are 46% higher in terms of # of incidents, 78% in terms of deaths, and 23% higher in terms of injuries.And thus I proclaim that incidents of communal violence actually declined during the current regime.They say “half knowledge is dangerous”. And the current shoddy state of mainstream journalism points to that.Here’s a decade worth of data collected from the same source (LS replies) - 7 years under UPA, 4 under NDA.Do you see a rising trend here?Under UPA/Congress, there were on average 760 such incidents every year, resulting in 118 deaths and 2209 injuries. The same for the last 4 years are 730 (-4%), 97 (-18%), and 2223 (+1%).The only statistically significant difference is in the average annual # of deaths in religious strifes and it is 18% lower today than it was half a decade ago. The other two are well within the range of normal deviation.The other aspects of the article are not even worth mentioning.a) Selected examples of mob violenceb) The same old “massacre under Modi’s rule in Gujarat” diatribe despite the fact that an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) cleared him of any complicity in the riots in 2012, and that the SIT judgment was then independently vetted and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2014.It’s both hilarious and depressing that it takes someone with a degree in journalism and a career at one of the leading news portals to come up with such a half-assed article.
