PDF Editor FAQ

Under what circumstances would someone be rejected from MIT early action rather than merely deferred admission until following rounds of consideration?

Assuming your essays and recommendations are OK, you will not be rejected in the early decision round. MIT would only reject an EA applicant if they see that this student has no chance to be admitted at all. Look at this stats for 2015 Admissions Statistics | MIT Admissions : from 6519 EA applicants 625 admitted and 4535 deferred. If you don’t mess up something in your application or essays - and I’m sure you won’t - you will not be rejected. You don’t have to wait until your project is complete and the paper is ready for publication. You can write about your research in the special research supplement to the MIT application. My son applied and was admitted EA least year. I think this research supplement was a big factor in his admission. Please see Irina Kitova's answer to Does publishing a research paper and getting a patent (without any parental involvement) guarantee undergraduate admission to MIT?In case you are deferred, you will have time to add an update on your research and accomplishments. Don’t hesitate to apply early action, but prepare your application very thoroughly. September-October: write the essays for the main part and research supplement, order the test scores, line up recommendation letters, make sure your school guidance counselor sends all the stuff that s/he is supposed to send. Don’t leave it till the end of October, you really don’t want to rush it. Double-check everything, take a deep breath, and click “submit”. Good luck!

Is there anyone who is poor in countries like Germany? By poor, I mean struggling to afford next-to-basic stuff like a decent house and a cheap car.

No.I am a computer scientist in Germany, I do not own a decent house. I actually own no property. I pay a rent which is quite common in Germany. Most people rent a flat. If you cannot afford a rent, the state will pay for a small flat which is about 45m^2 for a single person and take care than you can afford to pay for food and energy. So you’re not struggling even if you have absolutely no income. Of course it’s not luxury, but even then some people also drive cars. But what is a cheap car? You can get one for 500€ which is driveable. But you have to pay insurance and taxes and you have to pay for gas. Cheap cars are usually old, so they are polluting the environment. Due to this they are expensive in taxes. In order to drive you have to have a driving licence. Therefore you must take lessons and pass two exams. I paid 650 Euros (770US$) for my driving licence. You have to show knowledge for all signs and challenging traffic situations in theory and, after that, you will be tested in driving a car in urban areas, the city, on country roads and on the Autobahn. If you do something dangerous or need any help, you failed, have to take more expensive lessons and repeat until you succeed. I passed both exams at the first try and today you have more mandatory lessons to do. This was very cheap at that time. I am allowed to drive cars with trailers and small trucks with trailers (up to 18 tons). And it is 20 years ago. Today you should go for 1300 to 1700 Euros (~1400 to 2000US$) for a driving licence without trailers and no trucks over 3.5 tons. Therefore you need extra training. But that’s the driving licence. You do this once and then it’s done. The main problem is the car insurance. It depends on the car you drive and on the risk your car represents. If you drive something Pontiac Aztec you’re not a speeder, no one steals your car, rather someone gives you an additional one for free. So the insurance is cheap. If you drive a Golf GTI, a fast car which is preferred by younger inexperienced drivers, the insurance is expensive. Younger people make more mistakes and young people sometimes steal cars they like.Let’s say you just got your driving licence and buy a Golf GTI (150hp). I calculated a Golf GTI from 1993 for you for a young man who bought the car and drives 12000km (7500miles) per year at max. He has to pay 1947.11 Euros (2306.83US$) for an partially comprehensive insurance at the cheapest insurance company for one year if he pays once all at once. If he pays every month it is 173.89Euros (2086,68 for one year). So we have 500 Euro (600$) for the car, 300 Euros (355US) Taxes per year, 1700 US$ for the driving licence and 1950 US$ for insurrance. So we’re at 4605US$ to get to the point where we legally start the engine for the first time. We haven’t driven one single mile. (Okay, licence plates and so on… let’s say 4700$)Old cars use more gas. Here is a page that gives you the current gas prices in Germany. It’s more than twice the price like in the US.Ruben Schönefeld - Gas PricesThat car uses about 10l/100km, we want to drive 12000km, so we need 1200l of gas which is 1671,6 Euros (1980 US$) for driving. We have a cheap car of the age of 24 and if nothing is broken and we forget the driving licence we are about 4535 US$ for one year of driving plus 600$ for the car. There are no “cheap” cars in Germany. And you don’t get a car for that price from a dealer.I have a quite cheap car, 20 years of driving experience, I calculate 30€ct per kilometer (57$ct per mile).Especially the younger generation often does not ask for a car anymore. They know the public traffic system. Everybody uses buses and trains until the age of 18 when you’re allowed to drive. You can easily travel through absolutely all main cities by train and even the small city I live in has four train stations of the city train that connect you to two big cities on a direct route, one of them has an internal airport and both are good start places for travelling with the federal train system. Also we have independently of the city bahn a “Bundesbahn”-Railway station which connects you on the one site to the close by main city terminal like the city bahn and beyond and to the other side several other big cities of Germany. Additionally we have bus routes across the whole city. It’s nice to have a car in Germany, but you don’t struggle if you’re nearby a city.I am going to Berlin next month, which is about 400miles, so I let my car at home. I go to the city train station (10min), take the city train to the train hub (20min) and from there I take the InterCity Express train to Berlin. That’s about 5 hours of very relaxed traveling, sitting on a reserved place at a desk with power supply, wi-fi, service, a free newspaper and some candy from time to time. I pay less than half of the price of driving my car for a first class train ticket including an optional upcharge for regenerative power. I can work, relax and I am faster.I am struggling first class compared to driving a cheap car.In the big cities you don’t even want to have a car. If you need a car, you just rent it. Not having or using a car is no sign of poverty in Germany.Same for not owning a property. German properties are quite massive, reinforced, isolated buildings and not just some concrete with a wooden shed on top. ;) So it’s quite more expensive to build a house in Germany than in the US.Having a German house in Germany is more a question of wealth and not having a house is not a question of poverty. And yes. There are people who are really struggling. Usually the state helps, but if you’re illegal in Germany you cannot ask the state. As a refugee you’re legal, of course, but even then your life is harder than the life of German citizen without an income. If you’re legal in Germany maybe you don’t want to ask for help. Or you cannot ask for help because you’re alcohol or drug addicted and don’t accept any help from people who help you to get help.We have children living with parents who prefer to gamble instead of buying food for their kids. But you have failed people in every country. And there are people who don’t want to live like most Germans do. Poverity is not a crime. It’s also a right to choose to live with very few money. And the lack of money is not a problem for all people. These people live with very little money, but they don’t struggle. They also haven’t failed. They have just chosen not to participate in the way most people live in Germany.
