No.I am a computer scientist in Germany, I do not own a decent house. I actually own no property. I pay a rent which is quite common in Germany. Most people rent a flat. If you cannot afford a rent, the state will pay for a small flat which is about 45m^2 for a single person and take care than you can afford to pay for food and energy. So you’re not struggling even if you have absolutely no income. Of course it’s not luxury, but even then some people also drive cars.But what is a cheap car? You can get one for 500€ which is driveable. But you have to pay insurance and taxes and you have to pay for gas. Cheap cars are usually old, so they are polluting the environment. Due to this they are expensive in taxes.In order to drive you have to have a driving licence. Therefore you must take lessons and pass two exams. I paid 650 Euros (770US$) for my driving licence. You have to show knowledge for all signs and challenging traffic situations in theory and, after that, you will be tested in driving a car in urban areas, the city, on country roads and on the Autobahn. If you do something dangerous or need any help, you failed, have to take more expensive lessons and repeat until you succeed. I passed both exams at the first try and today you have more mandatory lessons to do. This was very cheap at that time. I am allowed to drive cars with trailers and small trucks with trailers (up to 18 tons). And it is 20 years ago. He has to pay 1947.11 Euros (2306.83US$) for an partially comprehensive insurance at the cheapest insurance company for one year if he pays once all at once. If he pays every month it is 173.89Euros (2086,68 for one year).So we have 500 Euro (600$) for the car, 300 Euros (355US) Taxes per year, 1700 US$ for the driving licence and 1950 US$ for insurrance. I go to the city train station (10min), take the city train to the train hub (20min) and from there I take the InterCity Express train to Berlin. That’s about 5 hours of very relaxed traveling, sitting on a reserved place at a desk with power supply, wi-fi, service, a free newspaper and some candy from time to time. I pay less than half of the price of driving my car for a first class train ticket including an optional upcharge for regenerative power. I can work, relax and I am faster.I am struggling first class compared to driving a cheap car.In the big cities you don’t even want to have a car. If you need a car, you just rent it. Not having or using a car is no sign of poverty in Germany.Same for not owning a property. German properties are quite massive, reinforced, isolated buildings and not just some concrete with a wooden shed on top. ;) So it’s quite more expensive to build a house in Germany than in the US.Having a German house in Germany is more a question of wealth and not having a house is not a question of poverty.And yes.There are people who are really struggling. Usually the state helps, but if you’re illegal in Germany you cannot ask the state. As a refugee you’re legal, of course, but even then your life is harder than the life of German citizen without an income. If you’re legal in Germany maybe you don’t want to ask for help. Or you cannot ask for help because you’re alcohol or drug addicted and don’t accept any help from people who help you to get help.We have children living with parents who prefer to gamble instead of buying food for their kids. But you have failed people in every country.And there are people who don’t want to live like most Germans do. Poverity is not a crime. It’s also a right to choose to live with very few money. And the lack of money is not a problem for all people. These people live with very little money, but they don’t struggle. They also haven’t failed. They have just chosen not to participate in the way most people live in Germany.
