PDF Editor FAQ

Without PCs and smartphones, how was the daily life of a BITSian in the 80s and 90s?

I was at Pilani Campus from 2001-2005, so have heard about the late 90s atleast and been in the middle of the transition. (We got mobile connectivity in my second sem and lan connection in our rooms in my fourth year). In some ways we had it worse than the 80s and 90s because we were stuck while the world outside had moved on.Here are some things which I guess have gone out of fashion.1. Gate calls: When girls had to call guys out from their rooms, they would need to hangout outside the bhavans, waiting to find a helpful soul going inside to call out the room number. It would typically be in the format of "106 gate call!". For guys visiting MB, there was a public address system on which the chowki would announce the room number. So everyone would know when a girl got visited!!! Sms, whatsapp and missed calls have killed this culture I guess.2. RAF movies: I heard these have stopped, not sure though. We used to have 12 english and 12 hindi films shown typically 3-4 weeks post release (once they were off from Delhi screens and the reel could be brought to Pilani). One of my most unforgettable experiences was watching Lagaan in the Audi.Everyone showed up and there were people sitting on the Audi floor, aisles. And the whistles and cheers during the climax made it seem like an IPL match was taking place (although none of us knew about IPL in those days - it didn't exist you see)3. Phones calls from home and back: We had one landline phone in each block of MB (3 in ninth block) and one phone in each guys Bhawan. These were for receiving calls. You had to fix a time with your parents/friends back home and pray to Shiv G or Sarawati Ma that the phone would be free then. It was a task for those with rooms close to the phones, because they were often disturbed by calls at odd hrs and then would either shout for the recipient or just put the receiver out (on permanent hold) if they were feeling particularly mean.So of course it was very difficult for our parents to reach us and it made more sense for us to call home. Almost every shop in C'not had a STD booth (some with rigged meters -I swear). There were also two phones inside MB usually used for post 11 pm calls when the call rates were one-third. For guys the phones were at S9 (Does S9 still exist, next point).4. S9: Located at the entrance of S block (or FD III) this was (does it still exist - in what form??) the hub for phone calls, printouts, xeroxes and Wait for it - Graphical Internet Access. So in those days all the comps in IPC were unix based. While we used a technology called telnet to access mail and read text on webpages it was all just lots of green text on black screens (think the matrix). You could not see any images or even the layout of a web page properly. This made things really difficult especially for fourth yearites apping to US univs (where a lot of stuff had become online already). So there were 4-5 comps in a room which you could book, a mini cyber cafe (Rs 5 per 30 mins). Priority was given to psenti semiites. The real use in the 2001-2003 era (before we got lan in the rooms) was to use yahoo messenger!5. Post office - 333031: We used snail mail. It worked.6. ATM or rather lack of it: In the years before net banking and debit cards we would make frantic calls home when we ran out of cash (after standing in queue at the STD booth for an hour). Parents would go to bank and get a DD made (usually mine sent one every month). DD would take a week or ten Days to arrive. Then you had to go to the bank to deposit it - this would entail at least an hr in the queue. Then you had to go back the next day to withdraw cash (again one hr queue). This is the reason for the 'Baad mein' culture at redis, Sky, C'Not. Made much more sense to run up debts and pay them at the end of sem. Will think of more and edit post later. Would love comments from current students.

Who do you think is the forgotten cricketer of the Indian team?

Here are some forgotten cricketers of 90’s who contributed to indian cricket and faded away.1.Abey Kuruvilla :-He is India’s tallest fast bowler of 6ft. 5 inches height. Kuruvilla lead the pace attack on the tour of the West Indies in 1997, when Javagal Srinath was sidelined with injury. While he returned adequate figures from that tour, and bowled decently in subsequent Test matches on flatter pitches, he was dropped from the team. He announced his retirement from first-class cricket in April 2000 during the quarter-final of the,at the age of 31.source:- wikipediaNow he is India’s selector from west zone.2.Hemang Badani:-The Chennai-born Hemang Badani was a fluent left-handed batsman, who played for India in a fair number of ODIs and four Tests. At his best, Badani could play eye-catching drives in the 'V'. He though, couldn't cement his place in the Indian side as he was let down by inconsistent form. In fact, it was in the backdrop of match-fixing scandal that broke out in 2000, Badani made his ODI debut in a game against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup.Badani then played his first Test against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2001. Interestingly, he played as an opener on his Test debut. After not being able to convert promise into runs, Badani finally seemed to have come of age when he amassed a brilliant ton against the World Champions Australia in Pune in 2001, only for Mark Waugh to crack an elegant hundred and take the game away from India's grasp. With a slew of younger players coming through the system, Badani then found himself in the wilderness. As he signed to play for the ICL in 2007 he was banned by BCCI, too. It was only when he left the ICL in 2009 and decided to agree to BCCI's 'amnesty offer' that he was given the chance to play in domestic cricket again. He even got a contract with Chennai Super Kings during that time. He played his final game in First-Class cricket for Vidarbha against Punjab in 2013.source:- crickbuzz3.Hrishikesh Kanitker:-Hrishikesh Kanitkar's name will be reverberated for generations to come for being the man who cracked that memorable boundary to help India win against Pakistan in a tri-series final held in Bangladesh in 1998. In a cauldron of bubbling tensions, Kanitkar smashed Pakistan's famed spinner Saqlain Mushtaq for a four as India registered a famous victory with just one ball to spare.Unfortunately though, Kanitkar had a checkered international career. The left-hander, who also bowled off-spin was pushed up and down the order, and that didn't help his cause. In fact, he amassed only one fifty in his ODI career and that came against Australia in Kochi in 1998. He played in a couple of Tests in Australia by the end of the millennium. However, he found Australia's pace attack too difficult to handle.Kanitkar was a prolific run-getter for Maharahstra and later on in his career, he captained Rajasthan to a couple of Ranji Trophy triumphs. Kanitkar retired from the game by the end of 2012-13 season with over 10,000 runs and 74 wickets in First-Class cricket.Source:- crickbuzz4.Praveen Amre:-He is stylish right hand batsman comparable to great Gundappa Vishwanath. Also he is co trainee under Ramakant Achreker along with Sachin Tendulker, Vinod Kambli.Only a few have made a hundred on debut in a Test match on foreign soil and for many it is a dream come true. Praveen Amre was one those rare breed of players who achieved this by making 103 against South Africa at Durban in 1992-93 under difficult conditions, for a struggling side and against an attack that included Donald, Pringle and McMillan. But then what more could one expect from a stylish right-hand batsman who hails from the 'Achrekar family' - a coach who had players like Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli under his tutelage. Amre played just two seasons between 1992 and 94 before being dropped unceremoniously. He first represented Bombay for one season in the Ranji Trophy in 1986-87 before moving to Railways, Rajasthan and Bengal in turn. He was a prolific scorer in domestic cricket. His 246 for Rest of India against Bengal is still the highest by any batsman in the Irani Trophy. He also scored runs aplenty along with a series of tall scores in the Duleep and Ranji Trophy, proving that he was the player best suited to the longer version of the game, displaying grit, temperament and determination. He was at his most prolific in the 1989-90 Duleep Trophy when he had scores of 106, 240 not out and 113 in the three matches he played. In the 1999-00 season Amre played on the South African domestic circuit representing Boland and had an impressive record. Several people asked why he wasn't in the Indian team. "All I could tell them was that I gave it my best shot each time. The rest was not in my hands"source:-cricinfoHe is now coach to Delhi Daredevils IPL team.5.Saba Karim:-Syed Saba Karim was a surprise choice for the tour of West Indies in 1989 but being the reserve wicketkeeper, never got to play a single international game. He was forgotten for some time but came back into the Indian side during the 1996 tour of South Africa. He made his debut in that series at Bloemfontein and scored a useful 55, which incidentally remains his best till date. Thereafter he never really got a chance to cement his place in the side, mainly due to the presence of Nayan Mongia. Even after Mongia's dismal 1999 World Cup campaign, Karim could not find a place in the squad as the selectors preferred MSK Prasad and Sameer Dighe. But with the two failing to capitalize on their chances, Karim who is also a useful late order batsman, got his due during the South African tour of India in 2000. Just when he seemed set to consolidate his position in the team, he received an untimely setback when he was injured on his right eye while keeping to Anil Kumble during the Asia Cup at Dhaka. He had to undergo surgery and the injury ended his playing career.Source:-cricinfoHe is now a commentator6.M.S.K.Prasad :-He is the first player to be selected from Andhra Cricket Association to international arena. It is never easy to force yourself into the Indian team when playing for one of the weaker state sides in the country and it is to MSK Prasad's credit that after coming through the ranks, he made it to the national squad on merit. The dapper cricketer from Guntur was interested in keeping wicket from a very early age and working himself up from state juniors to the Ranji Trophy squad, Prasad made the India A team. He first came into national reckoning on the India A tour of Pakistan in 1997-98 and coach K Srikanth spoke highly of his capabilities. All the time he was improving with the bat and before the season was out he had made his international debut for the senior squad in one-day games. The injury to Nayan Mongia, following the 1999 World Cup gave Prasad his big chance and he grabbed it with both gloves. In the 1999-2000 season he played in six Tests, three against New Zealand at home and three in Australia, acquiring himself creditably, besides playing in many ODI's. He was preferred to Mongia even after the latter was fit. Following the Australian tour however he was dropped after averaging just over eight with the bat. He played seven more seasons for Andhra in the Ranji Trophy, and captained in side in his final season, before deciding to call it quits. The 2002-03 season was his best as he scored 754 runs, including two hundreds and five half-centuries, and effected 32 dismissals from 11 matches - it was the only time in his career he averaged over 40 with the bat. In 2015, six years after his final first-class game, Prasad was appointed to India's selection panel and in 2016 became its chief.7. Sadagopan RameshHe is dashing opener from Tamil Nadu.Sadagoppan Ramesh made the grade after coming through the ranks. A string of notable performances with the India A team, culminating in a brilliant century against West Indies A pitch forked him into the national senior side. India A coach K Srikkanth strongly advocated his inclusion and the selectors, searching around for batsmen, decided to give the left-hand opener from Tamil Nadu the big break in his hometown of Chennai against Pakistan in 1999. Displaying two qualities that should be uppermost in any opening batsman - courage and big match temperament - Ramesh was an instant success. He played the pace of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akthar and the spin of Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed with equal felicity, ran up a series of consistent scores including a couple of hundreds and suddenly India had unearthed a world class opening batsman. But even as he ran up a Test average of 50 plus in his first half-a-dozen Tests, there were the cynics who pointed out to his faulty footwork and awry technique. Then there were the detractors who said he would never get runs away from the subcontinent and he would come up a cropper against the Australian pace bowlers on the faster and bouncier pitches. Taking up the challenge, Ramesh proved that he could get runs in any conditions and while he did not exactly set the Yarra river on fire, he did enough to prove his detractors wrong. But he struggled to convert good starts into big scores, and after a reasonable series in Sri Lanka in 2001-02, where he passed 30 five times in six innings but made only one fifty, he was discarded.source:-cricinfoHe is now actor who acted in 2 tamil movies8.Debashish Mahanti:-It is never easy for a cricketer from one of the weaker states to break into the national side. And on this count, Debashish Mohanty deserves credit for forcing himself into the Indian team on merit. Another who has come through the India A ranks, Mohanty's bowling impressed coach K Srikkanth who advocated his early inclusion in the senior side. A medium pace bowler capable of achieving quite a bit of movement in helpful conditions, Mohanty's tragedy has perhaps been the fact that the selectors have not known what exactly to do with him or where to fit him in. In English conditions for example Mohanty would be an obvious choice in the playing eleven. And as he proved in the World Cup, the selectors were right in picking him at the last moment, even though he was not in the original list of probables. In Indian conditions however, given his bowling style, Mohanty is bound to be less successful, except perhaps at centres like Calcutta and Mohali. He had few chances to cement his place on the tour of Australia where Ajit Agarkar was given more opportunities. But Mohanty was dropped in 2001 and slipped out of the international reckoning, remaining a capable performer wherever conditions help swing bowling.source:- cricinfo9. Nikhil Chopra:-He has got the tag of a one day specialist and is one of the first choices as a spinner in limited overs cricket. But watching Nikhil Chopra bowl one gets the distinct feeling that given a chance, he can be a success in the longer game too. For he has all the attributes of a good off spinner. He maintains good control over line and length, gives the ball plenty of air, turns the ball a fair deal and has a telling faster delivery. But Chopra's biggest assets are his aggressive outlook and the fact that he is a thinking bowler. Everything about his game - from the manner in which he bowls to his penchant for all out attack whenever he has been sent as a pinch hitter - has an attacking ring about it. Moreover, he is always thinking of ways to get a batsman out with his varied bag of tricks. He certainly has proved to be an asset to the one day side and this makes his non selection for even one match in the Carlton & United Series in Australia during the 1999-2000 season all the more baffling.source:- cricinfoHe is now cricket expert and commentator10. Salil AnkolaAnkola, a tall, good-looking and athletic fast bowler, made a dramatic debut for Bombay in 1988-89, grabbing a hat-trick and scoring 43 against Gujarat, and following up with a six-wicket haul against Baroda. He was almost immediately drafted into the Indian side, taking 6 for 77 in the tour-opener in Pakistan in 1989-90 and making his Test debut - against Pakistan at Karachi- where he took 2 for 128. But injuries - not helped by an extremely long run-up - took their toll and he didn't appear again in that series - in fact, the Karachi game was to be his only Test appearance. In 1990 he worked with Frank Tyson on remodeling his approach to the wicket, and returned with a shorter run, less pace but much-improved control. He returned to the Indian one-day side in 1993 but was again cast aside the following year, his place not helped by his reputation as a poor fielder. He was recalled to the side for the 1996 World Cup, and played in one subsequent series before again being dropped. Within a year, aged only 28, he had retired to pursue a career as an actor. He appeared in a TV serial - Sshh... Koi Hai as well as several film rolls. He subsequently turned his attention to film production.source:- cricinfoI remember another one: Amay Khurasia. I saw him play only once, and then he disappeared. He started batting by sending the first ball straight out of the boundary, and even scored a half century in that match!

Can someone who speaks Arabic or is a Muslim explain what Taqiyya is?

This term is spelt variously; “taqiyyah”, “takiya” or “taqiyya”.“Takiya (A.), caution, fear (see glossarium to Tabari S.V. T-K-A) pr kitman, “disguise” is the technical term for dispensation from the requirements of religion under compulsion or threat of injury.” [1]“Taqiyyah (From the root word waqa “to safeguard”; “self-protection” and hence “dissimulation [in order to protect oneself]”).” [2]So, taqiyyah (takiya, taqiyya) is concerning dissimulation due to force – i.e. when an individual is forced to conceal.Sadly, Islamophobes – in order to obtain an unchecked platform and/or demonise Muslims – have misapplied this term in their exaggerated claims of “Muslims are allowed to lie to the unbelievers”.At what level of force is Takiya (Taqiyyah, Taqiya) justified?“But an individual is not justified in takiya nor bound to hidjra [emigration] if the compulsion remains within the endurable limits, as in the case of temporary imprisonment or flogging which does not result in death” [1]So, this make a mockery of the Islamophobes’ general suggestions of “Muslims are allowed to lie to the unbelievers” as even under threat of imprisonment and flogging Muslims are not justified in takiya. The level of force which justifies oneself in takiya is that of an unbearable level.Takiya (taqiyya, taqiyyah) and the type of lies…One may ask, what type of “disguise” is allowed under takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya)?Let’s be clear about takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya); “The principle of dissimulation of one’s religious beliefs in order to avoid persecution or imminent harm, where no useful purpose would be served by publicly affirming them.” [2]So takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya) is not used to convert folk to Islam nor is it used in Islamic text books or anything of such a nature. It is simply a form of concealment used to avoid persecution! For further clarity, we are not talking about general, everyday fibs here, thus the ethical question of dishonesty is bypassed:“The ethical question whether such forced lies are nevertheless lies, such a forced denial of the faith nevertheless a denial, is not put at all by one “who conceal himself” as he is not in a state of confidence which would be broken by lies or denial.” [1]Sadly, our Islamophobic counterparts attempt to convince the gullible that takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya) allows Muslims to lie (or conceal) about aspects of their faith (Islam) as well as lie in general.Famous case of Taqiyyah (Taqiyya, Takiya)A common example of takiya (taqiyyah, taqiya) involves a Muslim (Ammar B. Yasir, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, p) being forced to worship idols and insult the Prophet of Islam. [1] [3]The level of force the polytheists applied on Ammar bin Yasir can be imagined by Amr bin Maymoon’s statement, “The polytheists tortured Ammar with fire”. [3]“Abu Ubaydah bin Muhammad bin Ammar bin Yasir said: The polytheists seized Ammar and they did not let him off until he was forced to insult the Messenger of Allah and say good things about their deities” [3]Ammar bin Yasir told Prophet Muhammad (p) of what he was forced to say.“The Prophet (p) said: “Say it again if they ask (i.e. force) you to do so”.” [3]So, in order to avoid such torture the Prophet allowed Ammar bin Yasir to use “taqiyya”If Jesus (pbuh) had done the same, our Christian friends would have lauded it as an act of piety and mercy. Instead we see Islamophobes exaggerating this form of concealment in order to demonise Muslims. It’s a crazy old world!Taqiyyah and the Shi’ites (Shia)"It is, however, associated most closely with the Shi’ites who practiced taqiyyah systematically and widely during periods of Sunni domination to hide their beliefs from Sunni Muslims. "[2]Obviously, if these Shi’ites felt they would have been persecuted for publicly announcing their shia beliefs, one can understand why they concealed (used taqiyya) their beliefs. Is taqiyyah allowed in the Quran? Our Islamophobic friends jump up and down in joy whilst proclaiming taqiyyah (taqiyya, takiya) is allowed in the Quran. Let’s analyse (via scholarship) the two Verses they cite.Quran 16:106 and taqiyyah (taqiyya, takiya)?Whoso disbelieveth in Allah after his belief - save him who is forced thereto and whose heart is still content with the Faith - but whoso findeth ease in disbelief: On them is wrath from Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom. [Pikthal translation of the Quran 16:106]The reason for this verse is unanimously said to have been the case of Ammar b. Yasir, whose conscience was set at rest by this revelation when he was worried about his forced worshipping of idols and objurgation of the Prophet. [1]The story of Ammar bin Yassir is relayed earlier (see above).Tabari says on Sura 16:106 (Tafsir, Bulak 1323 sqq.24.122): If any one is compelled and professes unbelief with his tongue, while his heart contradicts him, to escape his enemies, no blame falls him on him, because God takes his servants as their hearts believe” [1]The Quran’s (16:106) allowance of uttering disbelief whilst under extreme force is hardly justification for the outrageous smears the Islamophobes propagate.Quran 3:28 and taqiyyah (taqiyya, takiya)?Let not the believers take disbelievers for their guardians in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying. [Pikthal translation of the Quran 3:28]This Verse instructs Muslims to not take the unbelievers as patrons over the believers but does allow for this in the case of fear. Tuqatan is used here (a verbal noun of taqiyyah). Tafsir Jalalayn explains:“unless you protect yourselves against them, as a safeguard (tuqātan, ‘as a safeguard’, is the verbal noun from taqiyyatan), that is to say, [unless] you fear something, in which case you may show patronage to them through words, but not in your hearts” [Tafsir Jalalayn – 3:28]It is hardly something Islamophobes can latch onto as evidence for their demonization of Muslims as this Verse allows concealment (taqiyyah, taqiyya, takiya) in the case of fear (i.e. to avoid persecution). We are essentially back to where we started as initially stated on taqiyyah:Takiya (A.), caution, fear (see glossarium to Tabari S.V. T-K-A) pr kitman, “disguise” is the technical term for dispensation from the requirements of religion under compulsion or threat of injury. [1]Taqiyyah (From the root word waqa “to safeguard”; “self-protection” and hence “dissimulation [in order to protect oneself]”). [2]Lying about the Prophet Muhammad (p)Islamophobes, in an attempt to obtain an unchecked platform, do suggest Muslims misinform (“use taqiyya”) about the Prophet Muhammad (p). This is an utter absurdity as it is a grave sin for a Muslim to misinform about the Prophet Muhammad as the Prophet stated:“Whoever lies about me intentionally shall take a place for himself in hell” (al-Adhkar (y102), 510-12) [4]In fact, presenting misinformation about the Prophet (p) was considered an extreme offense amongst early Muslim communities:Habib ibn ar-Rabi’ said that it is disbelief to alter his [Prophet Muhammad’s] description and its details. The one who does that openly is an unbeliever. He is asked to repent. [5]So much for the Islamophobes claims of “Muslims using taqiyyah” regarding Prophet Muhammad (p).ConclusionTaqiyyah (taqiya, takiya) is not something to be writing home about. To use this practice to brandish Muslims as untrustworthy (or to demonise them) is unscholarly and unjust. If you do encounter an anti-Muslim bigot on the internet crying “taqiyya” (there are plenty about), please do send him/her to this group to be educatedReferences[1] Article by R.
