PDF Editor FAQ
Why is it not said that Christopher Columbus sailed with many Basques who knew the existence of America by reference to other Basque sailors who fished whales off the coasts of Canada?
Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the mouth of the St. Lawrence RiverMany legends and myths have become a reality contrasted after passing centuries. My theory is that when coincidences have a very low probability of occurrence, we must think that there is some truth, if it is not everything. There are a few legends that surround the figure of the Basque whalers who were the best whale hunters from the 8th century until almost the 19th century. Following the track of the whales, they left the waters of the Bay of Biscay to the Faroe Islands and Iceland, to sail towards the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River.A legend locates the Basque whalers in the American continent, in the year 1375. Exactly, on the island of Newfoundland, more than 100 years before the arrival in the New World of the Genoese admiral. But they were not conquerors, but fishermen with a reputation as corsairs or pirates. They did not kill Indians but whales for their sustenance and in their factories the whale oil used in the lighting of European houses and cities was produced.Other historical sources indicate that a score of men departed from the Bay of Biscay and Bayonne in the year 1412 where they later arrived in the territory of Newfoundland. And it is that there are data that corroborate the existence of Basque whalers already in the year 760 of our era. Others are related to the Vikings, especially by their matching naval constructions. Unfortunately, there is no archaeological evidence of all this.Perhaps the most outstanding piece of the site of Red Bay, Canada. It is the Basque whaling ship that has become one of the greatest jewels of underwater archeology. It is the San Juan galleon, a whaleboat built in Pasajes that sank in Red Bay in the summer of 1565 when, loaded with whale oil, it was preparing to return to the Basque coast.According to the version of a legend or a myth that circulated among the Basque sailors, they arrived in Newfoundland around 1375 and decided to keep the secret to avoid sharing with other fishing fleets the prodigious fishing grounds of the area. Between the myth and the reality, it is related that when the French explorers came into contact with the natives of the Island of Newfoundland, they greeted them with the formula "Apezak hobeto!"("The priests are better!", In Basque), that the Basque sailors used as a response if someone asked them about their health. At the same time, there is an undeniable huge trace that the Basque language caused in the languages of the inhabitants of the Island of Newfoundland since the 16th century. During the two centuries of splendor of the Spanish Empire, a pidgin was spoken in Newfoundland, that is, a rudimentary language that mixed Basque and the local languages of the natives. The same thing happened in Iceland where a Basque-Icelandic Pidgin language was spoken in order to understand each other and where they presumably had to talk about the land that the Vikings discovered in the western seas. Also, many of the current names of cities and other places in Newfoundland are of Basque origin. As an example, the city Port-aux-Basques is present in maps of 1612; Port-au-Choix is a disfigurement of Portutxoa,"small port"; and Ingonachoix which translates as"bad anchoring."On the other hand, Marq de Villiers and Sheila Hirtle are the authors of 'Sable Island', a book that collects the history of this sandy island located 150 km southeast of Nova Scotia, Canada. At present only two people and a hundred wild horses inhabit this unstable strip of 50 km long and one kilometer wide, which for more than 400 years was known as the 'Atlantic Cemetery', causing more than 500 sinkings of ships when the ships ran aground against the changing sand dunes.Although the official discovery of the island was carried out by Portuguese sailors at the beginning of the 16th century, the book echoes the possibility that in fact the first ones to arrive at Sable Island were Basque fishermen, in their whaling expeditions and in their constant search for new cod fishing grounds. Some researchers support the theory that the Basques came to North America, specifically to Newfoundland and the coast of the Labrador peninsula in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. These theories abound in the possibility that the Basque fishermen came to the area regularly, and perhaps even had small colonies of sailors working there, before Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 or that John Cabot arrived in Newfoundland in 1497.According to the authors of 'Sable Island',long before these 'discoveries' the rumor was already running around Europe that Basque sailors had found land on the other side of the Atlantic, maybe an island, maybe something else. Some Breton sailors apparently tried to follow the Basque sailors, without success. At the beginning of the XV century —the book continues saying— a history was known among the European sailors according to which two ships of the Western Baskonia, one commanded by Juan de Echaide and the other by Matías de Echeveste, would have reached earth beyond the Atlantic, at the end of the 14th century, although there is no documented proof of this. Recently, remains of important Basque whaling centers have been found on the coast of Labrador and in Newfoundland, but they date back to 1530. Only three decades later, the Basque population at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River would have reached 2,000 people. The Basques in the discovery of AmericaIt is no coincidence that the work done by the famous Basque cartographer Juan de Lacoza, and by the Basques in general, in the discovery of America was more effective than striking, more useful than agitated and more silent and modest than lucrative. I do not think it's any coincidence, the enormous participation of the Basques in the discovery of America. Is it that Juan de Lacoza knew something about the Basque whalers who had come to lands located west of Iceland? Why did he abandon his own business by accompanying Christopher Columbus from his first trip and then in the second, as a pilot of the Santa Maria caravel, of which he was the owner?Other Basques, also traveled in the expedition and, therefore participated in the Discovery of America, as assistants of Lacoza, the Basque sailors Juan Ustobia, Pedro Bilbao, Juan Lequeitio and his brother Txomin. For his third trip, Christopher Columbus, who was no longer with Lacoza, had four Biscayan captains of the six who were in total, and other Basques such as Lope de Olano, who had already gone on the second trip; Pedro de Arana, brother-in-law of Christopher Columbus and brother of Diego Arana, Pedro Ledesma as senior pilot; Martín de Arriaran and Fernando Ibarra, secretary of Christopher Columbus, who distinguished himself by his culture and was a personality in the letters, in addition to the sailors Diego de Portugalete, Martin Arrieta, Domingo Vizcaino, Gonzalo Salazar, Diego de Mendoza, Pablo Ledesma, Gregorio Zaldua, Pascual Luzuriaga, Machin Vizcaino, Martín Fuenterrabía and those of the second trip Domingo de Arana, Miguel Larriaga and Juan de Quijo.Seven trips in total made Lacoza to the newly discovered lands, in all of which he made many explorations and investigations as well as important discoveries. In the last of these trips the intrepid Basque sailor died on February 28, 1503 in Cartagena de Indias crossed by more than 20 poisoned arrows fired by the aborigines of that place after he came to support Alonso de Ojeda, provocateur of the fight with the Indians and who as soon as possible could flee the place leaving only Lacoza. The result of the voyages of this exceptional sailor was his famous map of the world, which he elaborated after his third voyage in the company of Alonso de Ojeda, in Santa María, in October of the year 1500 and which is the first cartographic document on America and the most important of the time. A fact that nobody has ever heard but that, nevertheless, is a fact that is well demonstrated. If this information is hidden in history, will not other more important data have been hidden about the reason for the great participation of the Basques, and, especially, that of the cartographer Juan de Lacoza, in the discovery of Amárica?Among the great lies of History, we find the fact that it was the Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan or the English corsair Francis Drake, the man who gave the world for the first time sailing, when it is fully proven that he was the Basque sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano. But we already know, "a lie, a thousand times repeated, becomes a truth" and in history there are many lies. Magellan died in the Philippine Islands, halfway, and the one that he gave for the first time round the world was the Basque Juan Sebastian Elcano on September 6, 1521 and the English Francis Drake made them in December of 1577, some fifty and six years later.
Is it worth it to live in Jersey City and commute to Manhattan for work?
I’m 33 and was raised in Jersey City. I’ve worked in Manhattan since 18 and lived there from 19–30. There are a few things to consider because the value of something, especially the place you reside, is so subjective:The PATH train. For the most part pretty clean unless you’re riding the train past midnight during homeless hotel hours. The ride to 33rd St is about 22–27 minutes depending on when you take it; World Trade Center is even quicker with a 12 minute ride from Journal Square. Federally mandated construction withstanding, PATH is reliable with its schedule. You’ll pay the same price as the NYC subway, $2.75/ride. The NYC metrocard may be used and can be loaded at any PATH station. You may only use a cash loaded metrocard as the unlimited option cannot be used. PATH does have its own swipe/tap card called SmartLink. They can be preloaded automatically or loaded at any station. They run in 2/10/20/40 trip loads or 1/7/30 day unlimiteds. The 40 trip is $84 and the 30 day unlimited is $89.Rush hour service isn’t too awful before 7 and after 8. The 7–8 hour can be pretty cramped at times. They do run frequent enough if you aren’t running late so that you can wait for the next train to get a seat. The PATH’s schedule does get a bit more blah late night running once every 30 minutes vs it’s 5–7 minutes during rush hour and about every 10 -15 minutes normally. So if you just miss the train and have to ride to Journal Square, you are easily talking an hour just to deal with the PATH. Around 11pm until 6am on weekday evenings and all day on weekends, PATH combines the lines servicing Journal Square and Hoboken to and from 33rd street. This adds one additional stop of Hoboken in between Jersey City’s Newport stop and the first stop in NYC, Christopher Street. The one stop however adds sometimes as little as 3–5 minutes or sometimes 5–10 minutes to the commute. The Hoboken PATH station has only one entrance so the conductor and operator must walk to the other side of the train to drive it back out.Would you need to take a train/bus once you arrive in Manhattan?Yes? So an average of 10 rides/week at $2.75 each. That’s $27.50/week or typically $110/month (except for the 5 week months). An unlimited pass is $116.50. Let’s just say you buy the unlimited because you might go to the city on the weekends. Is the apartment within walking distance to a PATH station? No? I’ll assume you have no car or that you also wouldn’t want to pay for parking.. Ok so there’s the bus. They are on average $1.60/ride. So that’s $16.50/week or $66/month. Or you could purchase the monthly bus pass at $59.There’s also the light rail if the apartment is a bit further away. $2.25/trip = $22.50/week=$90/month or you could get the monthly pass at $70. A light rail pass is considered a multi zone so you can also use it on the bus if needed at no additional cost.Rent in Jersey City is starting to get pricey, almost comparable to some parts of NYC.And the closer one lives to a PATH station the higher the rent gets. Not to mention that NJ does not have some of the same tenant laws as NY such as the landlord’s responsibility to pay for heat, hot water, sewage or sanitation. They may have to supply the facilities but have the right to state these as charges within the lease.Jersey City is a city that still has town vibes. Many stores and delis close no later than 10pm and even earlier on Sundays. So you’ll definitely want to plan ahead before arriving home. Night time is typically quiet; not an eve in the field with the cows quiet however you’ll hear birds in the morning and the insects at night, sounds that get lost in NYC. Jersey City is still run on a lot of mom and pop shops. So you still get to support local businesses that aren’t Walmarts or Amazons. There’s plans for new public plazas and housing. New restaurants are popping up allowing better inner city options.Space to Stretch.I cannot speak for any of the newer construction within Jersey City but you will typically get more space than an apartment in NYC at a slightly lower cost. While there are several apartment buildings many people rent out one/two family houses at decent prices. There are other commuting options. There is an NJ Transit bus and there are commuter vans that will take you to Port Authority. The NJ transit bus 119 rides through Bayonne, Jersey City, Union City and Weehawken as it barrels towards the Lincoln tunnel en route to Port Authority. Within traffic restraints they typically arrive on time but are not scheduled frequently as one would desire. As such they can get cramped. They’re also a whopping $6/ride (to get to the City) or a 4 zone $100 monthly bus pass that could be used on all local buses and also the light rail. The commuter vans are cheap. I believe they’re $3/$4. They also run very frequently. Being that the vans have no official route, they will sometimes deviate to avoid pockets of traffic and will almost drop you off anywhere on their path. However they only typically service the area from Journal Square to the heights. There is a van that runs along Kennedy Blvd south of Journal Square but it only runs from the morning to part of the evening. These vans might not have heat or a/c during their respective seasons, seat belts may not be there and who knows what kind of rig job might be under the hood or your seat. Both busses may take an hour or more just to reach Port Authority during rush hour depending your location on the route. But you won’t be cramped on the PATH.There are also a few ferry routes that can be accessed if you live downtown. The ride is pretty quick and I guess it’s cool/relaxing/scenic to ride the water to work. The ferry is the most expensive of your transit options outside of an Uber or cab. Depending on the ferry the price will be different. $6-$8/trip on weekdays and $6 on weekends. Just to travel to work for a Mon-Fri worker, it would be $60-$80/week and typically $240-$320/month. The monthly pass is a no brained here at $196-$274.50.Inner city travel. There’s lots of ways to commute around Jersey City if you do not have a car. As previously mentioned there are buses, light rails and the PATH train. There’s also been an influx of bicycle users as such bike paths have been developed and CitiBike has invested in their bike rental program throughout certain parts of JC. Just be aware that the PATH train and a handful of bus lines operate all night long. So cabs/Uber will be your best bet during those times.Personally, time and convenience were the biggest factors while evaluating the pros and cons on which city was “better” to live. I worked a night job so if I were going to be on a train late night and for 30 minutes to an hour, I’d rather be on the one train that takes me there. Additionally, I’m a single male. I don’t have a family for which to provide nor do I have a house filled with furniture and lots of possessions so there was no need for lots of space. Furthermore if the rent that I’d pay is only about $300–$500 cheaper than something that I can find in the City but will incur the “savings” as additional housing or commuter costs, then it’s not really worth it. Lastly I see a lot of people complain about income tax. Sure you pay more income tax in NYC because you pay city, state and federal but I found I still got a lot back at the end of the year with my return. For my experience, I found it more valuable to live in NYC.
How do you think Donald Trump should handle the Covid-19 pandemic?
Well? Let’s see. This is a better question than a lot of questions I’ve read because instead of pointing and complaining about what has been or has not been done, it examines what could have been.We can look at what has happened in the US, and argue, or we can compare it to what has happened in South Korea, and make a comparison between one country which took this seriously from the start, and another which … well… didn’t.One more thing. Yes, I know the United States has a larger population than South Korea’s. Every time I talk about numbers in South Korea, I’m going to then multiply those numbers by 6.3 and show you the “US population equivalent.”Looking at today, in order to account for the larger population, the comparison is 793K cases and 42.5K deaths in the US vs 68K cases and 1,506 deaths in a South Korea, 6.355 times as populous. Make sense?Let’s get started. The United StatesThe United States in 2018 and 2019 slashed more than 2/3 of its staff at the Beijing office of the CDC as part of a larger pullback of US-funded health and science experts on the ground in China. (Exclusive: U.S. slashed CDC staff inside China prior to coronavirus outbreak.)On May 10, 2018, Trump Fired Rear Adm. R.Timothy Zeimer, the administration’s senior director for Global Health Security and biodefense, the official responsible for leading US Response in the event of a Pandemic and the global health security team he oversaw. — Note: The date on that linked article is May 10, 2018, so you understand it’s not a criticism in hindsight. That article was saying “WTF” a year and a half before this virus first showed up in Wuhan.ChinaOn Dec 31, 2019, China reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, Hubei Province. (This is why it’s a good idea to have a fully staffed office in China.)On January 20, the first case of COVID-19 was detected during a screening at Incheon International Airport in South Korea. The Republic of Korea Government updated its infectious disease Alert National Crisis Management System from Blue to Yellow. News & Welfare Services > Press Release View ContentOn January 21, all individuals traveling to Korea within 14 days of visiting Wuhan were required to submit a health Questionaire and report fever or respiratory symptoms to a Quarantine officer. The United StatesOn January 21, US Officials in Washington State confirmed the first Case on US soil, one day after the first case was detected in South Korea. On January 22 - Asked by a CNBC reporter if there were any worries about a potential pandemic, Trump replied: “No. Not at all. So it doesn't get out of hand."That same day, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the outbreak as "public health emergency of international concern over the global outbreak of novel coronavirus."On January 31 - The Trump Administration announced it would deny entry to foreign nationals who had traveled to China in the last 14 Days. The ban, which Trump continues to call a “very strong ban” does not include anyone but non-US Citizens or residents or their families coming from China. If you are a permanent US resident or even just a family member of a permanent resident, even if you have been in Wuhan for the last month, you are free to return to the US. The same people would have been sent through an entirely separate Airport terminal in Korea, immediately screened for symptoms, tested for the virus and required to self quarantine for a minimum of 2 weeks. Here, no checks are made on your health, no restrictions placed on your movement. The “very strong ban” only blocks foreigners from entering the country.South KoreaOn January 30 - Approximately 250 people from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of National Defense and the Korean National Police Agency were stationed at Incheon International Airport's quarantine checkpoints. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that the Epedimic Prevention Budget fo 20.8 BillionKRW ($17M USD) would be swiftly executed to “ensure preemptive epidemic prevention.” The Ministry also announced that ROK would be sending chartered flights to Wuhan and surrounding areas to bring Korean citizens back home.On January 31 - The first chartered plane From Wuhan returned 368 people to Korea. 2 tested positive for the virus. It was a risky move, the tests had only been briskly vetted, but they circled back later to spot check effectiveness. All foreigners who had been in Hubei in the last 14 days were banned from entering Korea until further notice. Special screening was added to immigration procedures requiring the rise of a self-diagnosis mobile app.On February 7 - A newly developed test kit capable of producing results in 6 hours was made available at 50 health facilities. The number of screening clinics was increased to 556, up from 288 set up by January 28.The United StatesOn February 10 - Trump spoke at a campaign rally in Manchester NH."Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that's true. But we're doing great in our country. China, I spoke with President Xi, and they're working very, very hard.
