I’m going to brag about my daughter here.Before I do that, I’ll answer from what I remember of my college application days. I was accepted at ECU, DePaul, and UNC-Wilmington. I was rejected from UNC-Chapel Hill. I don’t remember if I applied anywhere else.But my daughter… she was accepted everywhere she applied: UC-Boulder, Augustana, Purdue, WI-Madison, Loyola Chicago, and U of I Champaign. She got no less than a $10,000 academic scholarship from each of the private schools on the list, but, even with that, U of I - Champaign is the best choice.It’s good to be a female who is good at math and wants to go into engineering these days. Colleges love that.

One.I repeat, do not be like me.Apply to your top school and at least one backup school, just in case (if attending college is that important to you).I was pretty confident I would get in to UNC (Northern Colorado, not North Carolina), so I didn’t worry about my other applications. Not a bright idea, but it worked out for me.Most people I know applied to anywhere from 3–10 schools, depending on where they planned to go.Apply for a reach school, your ideal school, and your backup school. So you think IQ is a good predictor of graduate success, yes?It isn’t. Neither are GRE scores, grades, or anything else quantitative.Does a decent predictor exist?The predictor that emerged as most powerful in both the UNC study and the UC San Francisco analysis was letters of recommendation from applicants’ undergraduate teachers—in other words, subjective assessments from people who presumably knew both them and their subjects well. What does?, Science, 11 January 2007.In fewer words, if you want to succeed as a graduate student (regardless of your IQ), start doing graduate-like work with mentors who know what that means.That comes with an important caveat: if you’re only an average student in a particular class, you’re probably not going to get much traction trying to do more difficult work in that area. I do think you need to be above-average in an area to succeed in grad school. That may not be reflected in your grades, and it may not be reflected in your IQ results, but it needs to be there.
