Do democracies tell history more accurately than non-democracies, or is this a fiction? What are the factors that lead to an accurate recording, and interpretation of history?In my Australian schooling I had three subjects that investigated historical perspectives…Modern History, which mainly concentrated on the federation of Germany & Italy, WW1 & WW2, the USA war of independence & its civil war.Economics. That investigated the rise of unionism & the Australian labour movement, comparison to similiar events in Europe, Russia & the USA, impacts of WW1 & the USA’s policies instigating the Great Depression and support for Nazi Germany which led to WW2, which led to the inflationary periods there after.French. In this subject we explored the French revolution and its impacts on society and therefore language. Ditto WW1 & WW2.My education was in the 1950s & 60s, so WW2 and its social impacts were still very close to the heart. Here in Oz, we had a major influx of European refugees, and the life stories of the people I encountered conflicted with the official historical narratives, which tended to be aimed at lifting the national morale rather than presenting facts.Formal history is largely a political mechanism for sanitising or omitting the truth to make reality palatable for the masses.In my day, when reviewing USA history, we weren’t taught about the “Trail of Tears”, “The Missouri Massacre”, “The Nuremberg Defense”, etc etc etc, or the fact that the founding fathers of the USA were 100% against democracy and formulated the USA Constitution so that democracy would never prevail in the USA, or that the USA Presidency was designed to have more executive power than King George, and the USA presidency is modeled on European monarchy as Caesar.Do democracies tell history more accurately than non-democracies, or is this a fiction?It is a fiction. You only have to read & compare the books written in the 1950/60s and those written in the 1990s/2000s when classified documents began to be released. All histories are fabrications, with “the facts” made to fit social/political needs.What are the factors that lead to an accurate recording, and interpretation of history?Access to original documentation: personal diaries, film, photos, letters, recordings of peoples testimonies, media reports, old newspapers, advertisement bochures & other print, de-classified government documents & other day to day trivia.When my eldest son did his HSC, a question on the exam paper surprised me: An English translation of a personal advert in a German newspaper was given, and the question asked the student to explain the advert. My son explained to me that Hitler had a program to encourage young Ayrans to replicate quickly, by offering them home loans to newly weds. For each child they produced, the loan debt would be cut in half. My son also told me the Nazi also had centres (free brothels) where good Ayran girls were expected to volunteer to copulate with good Ayran boys and produce nice Ayran babies. When pregnancy ensued the girls went to health spas, and after giving birth they went back to their lives, the child being raised by the state (bit like the arrangement that later ensued in certain Kibbutz in Israel).Now what does that trivia have to do with the history of world events. Imo, it demonstrates the machinations of government, and how popular policies can corrupt an entire nation. Now that is history we can learn from, more so than being revolted by the Dresden conflagration unjustifiably enacted by the allies, or the Coventry conspiracy conducted by the British.Governments of all persuasions lie, and the authorised histories are manipulated and largely censored by all persuasions to placate a populace.The only safe guard we had to get near the truth was “the free press”, now we have the confusion of the internet.As the Indian mystics will advise, “Everything is Maya, an illusion”. Believe nothing unless you can personally prove it to be true, and with access to original documents on various websites that is getting easier, but always be skeptical of your sources. One witness is never enough.
