How do I judge good medical college?

The counselling fever is on, and here we welcome much awaited ( XD) 2020 batch ....The rank inflation disaster of 2020 is well known to all, getting a medical college is getting tougher and tougher in the country even though the seats increase but the synchrony is very lessRegarding the Choice of college at the respective rank, many Quorans have written fabulous answersSo I’m not gonna repeat regarding the same old points, here I have some points which are rarely discussed on which I wanted to really point out :1. Batch strength: This is something which can be controversial and which I think is one of the crucial points one should keep in mind before joining the college .A batch of 250 students or more than that, according to me is not at all feasible except in some very good colleges having a very good facility ( MAMC, UCMS ,BJMC,JIPMER) who can manage. And efficient learning cannot happen in a crowd of students right from the first year at the anatomy table to the second-year microbiology labs to the third year CFM (PSM) postings. What is the value of student in such a big crowd ?The medical colleges of other countries don’t have such a huge batch strength.Government runs propaganda of increasing the number of MBBS seats even though they don’t have that much faculties and facilities to run ,they just have to show in the data, that’s it.That’s where AIIMS , BHU etc stands apart. With optimum and state of the art facilities along with Less number of students means individual care and no overcrowding and efficient learning.( spacious LT at AIIMS P)We are basically divided in small groups even at Pathology, biochemistry ,physiology etc. tutorials where professors,SRsteach us and there is bonding and effective communication. This system can never be as efficient in colleges above 200 students. Now a guy over quora gave a very sugar coated answer that “ we get to learn a lot from the other 249 batch mates, its an opportunity” . These people don’t understand actually and blur out any reason to defend their college even though “unki lagipadi hai”So pls, keep in mind the above factor2. Hostel facilities : now many newbies over Quora who have secured good rank in 2020 are mulling over an issue of academics ,City life etc.of collegeBut they don’t discuss the much underrated issue of the hostel facilities as much. Man! you have to spend 5.5 years in a college and have to make a lot of memories with your friends!A proper hostel facility is must for that.Academics of a college won’t matter that much some time because as we all know its an individual approach how they study. A sound and steady environment will help you a lot in long run. Individual rooms are a bliss , that too from first year of college(in AIIMS Delhi and Patna)!.Aiims have an upper edge here again than any great state govt. collegeRecently KEM College, said that they don't have hostel to accommodate. At least they confronted.Mind you there are many “ great colleges” with “great alumini” having shitty hostel facilities and to be top of that they don’t accept it . Moreover they ,push 4 to 5 students in a single room or dorm like school kids for the entire Academy carrier .especially State collegesI don’t know how they manage.3. Aiims selection rule : AIIMS D > AIIMS 2012 ones ( all are equal)> AIIMS 2018 ones> AIIMS 2019onesChoose the college which is nearer to homeRather than indulging in the debate OF which in this is better ?I’m literally tired of proving that all the 2012 AIIMS are equal in terms of facilities that an MBBS students want. There are literally minor flaws in every AIIMS which is strength of other ones which is not gonna affect uSo rather than categorising on the basis of old notions ( victims are especially RAIPUR n PATNA) , be prudent and grab the one nearer to home. You will thank me laterNow there are many spaces regarding every aiims which provide you insights, you can follow that but do remember the above rule.Best of luck for your counselling guys!Thank-youP.s: who all are planning to join AIIMS P , do comment( one of my juniors room)Thankyou Atul Kumar Vaibhav for the pics

What are some of the best scuba related blogs on the web?

I follow:Scuba Diver Life (Scuba Diver Life)Underwater Times (news of the underwater world)Aquaviews (SCUBA Diving News Blog from Aquaviews)DAN (Scuba Diving Medical Safety Advice — DAN)Diver Magazine (DIVER magazine)Dive Photo guide (Underwater Photography & Video: DivePhotoGuide.com)PADI (PADI BLOG)PADI TecRec (TecRec Blog)Steve Lewis (Doppler's Tech Diving Blog)Among others. As a shameless plug, I also periodically publish on my own blog (Blog - Ashley Hauck Photography - Underwater Photography), which profiles wrecks and interesting sea creatures, with a sometimes humorous (I think) slant.

Can I become a scuba diver if I start learning it in my forties? Anybody here with such kind of experience in life who can share it?

Yes, you can learn to SCUBA in your forties. In the bad old days there were significant physical fitness tests, distance swims, breath holding exercises, and even hazing by senior divers. Those stories came from the military beginnings of the training and skill sets. There are tales of people having to do a one mile swim, or free dive to 10m and put on their dive kit while blindfolded, or having their air supply turned off at 30m as a “test” to see if they would panic. Those were the bad old days. SCUBA is taught in a much more gentle way now and in my opinion, as a result of that, it is now much safer than it used to be.In a modern SCUBA class, you are very safe. Your instructors should be fully supportive and helpful and cooperative and reassuring and teach you how to be safe, comfortable and deal effectively with every situation you encounter. You will be exposed to new situations and learn techniques to deal with new and unexpected situations.SCUBA training is all about safety procedure and attitude training. The physical skills will come easily with experience. The procedures and attitudes have to be first. Checks, double checks, good habits, caring for your self and buddy.By my observation, some maturity is helpful in being in control in new situations. That is important in SCUBA training and diving. To learn SCUBA from a recognized program (there are many) you should see your doctor and ask if you are fit enough. You may have to sign a form saying you have done that, or your doctor may have to sign that you have been examined for various conditions and found fit to dive.Disqualifiers? Uncontrolled blood pressure problems. Inner ear problems. Heart problems. Asthma. Bronchial or lung problems. Circulation problems. Epilepsy or blackout or fainting problems. Diabetes. Colostomy or hernia problems. History of heart attack or stroke. History of embolism or previous pressure related trauma. There are a number of obvious - and some not so obvious - reasons some people just shouldn’t dive.PLEASE, don’t fib on that form. No one wants to see a buddy in danger or be part of a catastrophe. Catastrophes and trauma are no fun at all.I live in Bermuda. We have a LOT of visiting divers, many are beginners acting on a life long dream or working their way through a “bucket list” of things and SCUBA happens to be on that list. A few times each year our dive operators have diving emergencies that require visits to the hyperbaric chamber. It is policy to be conservative in treating diving related problems. Almost ALL of those emergencies are health related by divers who did not take their fitness to dive seriously. Most survive. Occasionally our hospital or emergency teams have a bad outcome. The most popular dive program in the USA is PADI. See the PADI medical declaration for details about what medical conditions preclude you from diving.I am a member of the Bermuda Sub Aqua Club. It is a branch of the British Sub Aqua Club, which very popular in the UK. Here is the BSAC medical declaration. Some of the disqualifications are age related but none of them are age specific. If you are healthy and are comfortable in the water and can swim, and do not have any of the disqualifying health conditions, you can learn to dive.In my time with the club (dating from 1987 or so) we have taught many adult people to dive. In fact, we had one woman in her late 30s who couldn’t swim. We taught her to swim and then to dive. She was also a special case. Being a “mouth breather”, she had particular difficulty clearing her mask. The BSAC training methods are very good with special cases. She still dives twenty years later. All that to say, I have associates who still are in the water breathing compressed air and enjoying the underwater world in their mid-70s.SCUBA can be a great sport. It opens a new world to explore and enjoy!Good luck!
