I recently reviewed 17 of the most popular options for backpacker travel insurance and was surprised what I found.The cheaper policies were actually some of the best, with better coverage than some of the most expensive options!When searching a good backpacking travel insurance policy will include;Medical and dental cover ranging from small prescriptions to major surgeryBaggage, electrical and documents cover also covering things like bicycles, outdoors or camera equipmentLegal cover and advice paying for lawyers’ fees to political support if there is civil unrestCover if you cancel or change your trip also includes transport delaysHome visits if you need to return home during your tripHostage cover everything from ransom fees to paying for negotiatorsNatural disaster cover hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires etcComprehensive sports and activities coverBackpacking insurance differs from regular insurance as it’s aimed at travellers to multiple countries and for varying lengths of time. It also has a much more comprehensive cover for sports, activities and things you’re likely to come across on a backpacking trip.Things to look out for when buying travel insuranceMedical, cancellation and curtailment, legal, liability and repatriation are the most important aspects – find the policy that has the best coverAlways read the policy wording and small print so you know what is includedMake sure you’re covered for all the destinations you’re visiting and the activities you’re doing (sometimes they’re an add-on)Check all of your baggage is covered and that gadgets cover isn’t additionalIf you’re travelling with expensive gear or equipment make sure the single article limit is high enoughA 24-hour emergency helpline is very useful to haveIf hiking or climbing make sure you don’t go above the height or altitude covered, for campers check your baggage is covered whilst in the tentFind out how much cash you are covered for and try not to carry more than thatSee what the excess is and decide what you would be able to paySome insurance policies won’t cover periods of voluntary or paid work – check the policyAge restrictions may apply and if you have pre-existing medical conditions then make sure you state themIt’s great having the option to return home – some providers include thisThings which are generally not covered – cruises and winter sports, alcohol or drug related accidents, failure to declare medical conditions, stolen items which weren’t reported.In my research I was really happy to see that many of the cheaper options were actually much better than the most expensive ones. The worst were some of the most expensive and most publicised.World Nomads, STA and World First are highly recommended online and come with a super high price tag but there policies were often worse than many cheaper options.As an example for the same search (1 male 28 yo travelling worldwide for 1 year) World Nomads was £467 whilst Alpha was only £180. And, for most areas the cover was actually better with Alpha!Altogether looked at:- Alpha- Big Cat- Boots- Cover 4 Insurance- Cover for You- Direct Line- Explorer- Globelink- Go Walkabout- Holiday Safe- Insure and Go- Insure with Ease- Outbacker- STA- True Traveller- World First- World NomadsIt was Alpha, Go Walkabout, Cover for You and Holiday Safe (my current insurance) which all had some of the best cover and were cheaper than competitors.Thought it might be helpful as you don't need to shell out loads of money to find a decent policy.
