Being a student of LPU, I think I can provide you with an honest opinion. Though I'm not pursuing my BSc (Hons)Mathematics, I do have my friends who are pursuing the same.Here are some highlights of B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics at Lovely Professional UniversityThe programs of mathematics aim to develop potential of students to meet new challenges and to lay the foundation of versatility and innovative thinking, which they need as a mathematician.The department offers 3-year Bachelor’s program (Honors) in Mathematics, 2-year Master's program (Honors) in Mathematics and 2-year Master’s program in Statistics and Data Analytics.Department also offers a Ph.D. in various thrust/research areas of mathematics.These programs have been designed with the aim of fulfilling the demands of experienced human resource in the fields of academia and industry.The department has adopted UGC model, international curriculum and pedagogical tools for the different programs.These programs enable our students to be absorbed as mathematicians in various institutions in the country as well as abroad.Group discussions, seminars, project work, mock interview etc. are made essential components of various courses, to enhance the understanding of the subject in depth and to understand problems independently.The curriculum is supplemented by offering minor courses in business, economics, computers, or statistics for increased OPportunities.Apart from the course curriculum, guest lecturers, workshops, and interaction with expertise are other important activities of the department.Successful students become professionally skilled and are capable of being placed in academics, R&D and industries.Highly Qualified and Experienced faculty: The department has 60+ highly qualified and motivated faculty members having a passion for both teaching and research. I might digress or rant a bit. This might be construed as an overview of DSE from an engineering background student.Current Status, Research, Teaching and Options:True, the quality of the institution has been deteriorating every year as far as economic theory is concerned. The current HoD and director do not have an adequate research output either. The website is obsolete. The faculty/student ratio is too small. There isn't an active alumni/student-driven community job postings Google group.There was a public Academia Google group where the PhD students shared their application process but that also fizzled out. There aren't many summer programs other than the Krishna Raj fellowship which involves data collection and analysis at best. There aren't any formal professor-led reading groups and sub-institutions for research other than the C.D.E. These are common hurdles which a motivated and resourceful student can surpass during his stay at the D-School.All of the above flaws can be attributed to it being under D.U., therefore, less autonomy, more foundational/traditional, more common university rules and bureaucratic red tape. I think Sudhir Shah is due after the current HoD though- he is genuinely interested in the quality of the institution and things might change after that.Teaching is excellent though. It is a good place to digest ideas rather than produce any new research. A place of learning should be at the forefront of current research, which it isn't. Teaching can be enhanced with online login, college ids and submission portals. Students should be encouraged to submit assignments online using Overleaf/LaTeX in every course, with assignments counting towards the grade.Some of the old professors really teach outdated topics/research. The new generation of professors are somewhat competent though.But, the landscape of economic research is changing every year. To cite a few, there is no Market Design or Asset Pricing or ML econometrics or Economic Networks or Bounded Rationality/Behavioral Economics optionals.Once Hal Varian, Chief Economist at Google came for a lecture at DSE. He gave a expository/introductory lecture on data mining and big data: new tricks for econometrics. Even Sudhir Shah was opposed to his ideas and asked a counter-question as to why people just cannot stick to what was taught in the econometric theory classrooms in the 90s. Our faculty isn't that open to new ideas other than a few perhaps. Whereas, the Age of Big Data beckons.I don't know if it is the policy of D.U. or not, but there is no inter-departmental research. There is some really interesting research happening at the overlap of game theory, graph theory, data mining, and machine learning in the US. If you are from a CS background, that could be comparatively advantageous for you in the app process.Though, the best place for pursuing research in economic theory in India is at ISI-Delhi under the supervision of Debasis Mishra (a professor from an engineering background) and Arunava Sen. If you can work as a RA for them, that's a sure-shot route to go for a US-PhD. Or, Mausami Das (DSE) and Tridip Ray (ISI) (if you're into macroeconomics). Or, recently heard about, environmental economics/engineering, health policy, then Anant Sudarshan of UChicago Delhi. (to cite a few options)I haven't heard of anyone trying for it but the engineering/math background students can opt for a PhD in Financial Engineering, Financial Mathematics or Operations Research post-MA in Economics. Schools like Courant-NYU, Stanford, Berkeley and CMU are famous for it. (For people reading this post, has anyone done it?)Placements:Some professors treat companies as if they are violating their private and sacred place of research/learning. Ironically, the non-innovative professors only understand the value of an active placement cell and diverse exit options.For an engineering background student, it can be advantageous if you're from an IIT. The brand value works as far as placements are concerned, but most likely in the investment banking domain, where prestige matters. You will most likely end up with an Analyst role, unless you apply off-campus.For a non-analytics role, yes, engineering students are at a disadvantage unless you have a previous relevant internship or a suitable undergraduate project under your belt. That's the way it is. The companies come to the campus for diversity and since more than 60% of the batch is female and non-engineer (unlike the IIMs), it serves their need.DSE shouldn't be compared with two-tier B-schools as it is an academic institution. There is a 100% placement record for the non-ER students. The profiles offered are different here than B-schools.The companies that I can remember which visited in recent years:CEPA, OUP, IRRAD, J-PAL. Goldman Sachs for the GIR (Global Investment Research) and MRMA (Market Risk Management and Analysis) profiles, Nomura for the GMD (Global Markets Division) profile, PwC DIAC (Decision Innovation Analytics Consulting), PwC Banking Services and Capital Markets Practice, Accenture Digital – Advanced Analytics practice, Deloitte- Actuarial Rewards and Analytics, JP Morgan, American Express, Barclays, Dunnhumby, Citibank, HP, Dell etc.
