PDF Editor FAQ

How competitive are cheerleading tryouts?

It really depends on the school. In some places, being in the cheer squad is a big deal and sometimes hundreds of people show up; at other schools that aren't as large in size or cheerleading isn't as popular, maybe only a few dozen. I attend a small private school, so we're very lucky if a couple dozen come to tryouts, although my coach said ten years ago a lot more used to come.It also depends on the skill levels of the girls. Some tryouts attract more All Star cheer girls, whose stunt and tumbling skill levels are usually very high. At smaller tryouts maybe only a few to no girls compete on an All Star team, so it is less competitive for those with lower skill levels.Another factor that draws more competition to tryouts is if the squad competes at cheer competition. Usually if a squad competes, the coach is looking for people with high skill sets in tumbling, stunting, and technique. Some squads take all who tryout, and others take only a cut. As I said above, it depends on the school and squad size, the skill level of the people trying out, and if the team competes. And in regards to the article in the link, no, I don't think every one who tries out should make the squad. Tryouts are just that–tryouts. They show the individual skill sets of the people who wish to be on the team and help determine if they would excel on the squad.

What does it take to get into high school cheerleading?

If you are asking specifically about skills needed to make the team:if all depends on your schools team(s). Typically freshman are required to have the least amount of skills with varsity having the highest level of skills. It will depend on whether or not your teams compete or just do sideline cheering. You best bet is to ask the cheerleading coach what will be required at tryouts.for example at my daughters high school no tumbling is really required for freshman but they do learn a cheer and a chant. While their variety team has gurl what have fulls along with sharp skills during cheers, chants and dance.

What should I do after not making the varsity cheer team? I recently tried out for the varsity Cheer team. After doing varsity this year I was hopeful for another year, but instead current 8th and 7th traders made varsity and I(9th) was put on jv

You can ask the coach to tell you their reasoning for choosing you for jv instead of varsity. Maybe s/he can explain their decision and can give you suggestions on what you need to work on to be on varsity for the next year, or perhaps be moved to the team later on in the year. Work on the things that they tell you and don’t give up! Consistently stretching and doing exercises properly like squats, pushups, sit ups, planks, etc can really help your body in all areas of cheerleading. Ask for help when you need it! In the meantime, keep working on your skills and ask someone if they see any areas where you can improve. If you must cheer on the JV squad, keep working hard and consistently and become a leader for the rest of the cheerleaders. You do not have to be a captain (if you don’t want to) but hold yourself accountable and hold each other accountable for practicing, improving and building their skills. Do what you say you’re going to do, and what you expect others to do. Be a reliable and trustworthy teammate to your cheerleaders. Also, take care of yourself. Make sure you are properly stretched and hydrated, and that everyone else is too. Give your coaches no doubt about choosing you for the varsity team in the next tryouts.
