What does it feel like to study in a Sainik School in India?

I studied in Sainik School, Tilaiya (SST) for 5 years ( std. 6th to 10th 2002-07 ). I can certainly say that these were the best days of my life. The basic aim of SST is to prepare boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into defence services. The following are my personal views about this institution (I will try to answer according to the order of questions asked) :1.How it feels :It feels really great because of primarily two reasons:a). Students are selected on the basis of an all India entrance test, which fills in a sense of pride that we are some of the better students in terms of academic performance, just a feel good factor for a child :-) .b). Because of the atmosphere there. People are really motivated and there are a lot of things to learn.2.What I felt and learned :I felt a sense of transformation from an immature, irresponsible kid to someone who started understanding responsibilities.I started understanding that to succeed in life you have to face and endure harsh conditions, and harsher the conditions you endure, better the person you become. So the most important thing I learned at SST was the mental strength. The second most important thing I acquired is physical endurance. Although I do not consider myself physically strong, but there I learned how mental strength plays a pivotal role in extending your physical capabilities. And of course I had to learn different subjects, just like in any other school.3. Academics and other activities:Academics is really good and compares well with best known schools in India. SST boasts of a very high number of qualified faculty members. The teacher to student ratio is also good .I don't have the exact figures to support my claim, but each section, out of four sections in a class, comprised of at most 35 students. Each section had different set of subject teachers.Academic standards are very high and for sure compare favorably with the best schools in India. As far as results are concerned it is one of the best in Jharkhand. Although it is a defence oriented school, academics is considered the most important. So you HAVE to do well in studies as well as do all the other activities (which are mentioned below.)Daily schedule breakdown :Physical exercises in morning, breakfast, classes from 8.30am to 1.30pm ( divided into 7 periods ), lunch, games in evening, prep. classes, dinner, lights out.During prep. class students had to go sit in academic block and do self study. It was mandatory for all students, except for someone with genuine reason e.g, sick students.Whole strength is divided into 12 houses.Hierarchy is strictly maintained, like seniors are above juniors. Just like defence services. This made life little bit difficult for some people. Disobeying a senior was considered a great offence. You had to respect and obey your seniors. There were a lot of facilities provided to help students learn. Students can go study in academic block at any time of the day, 2am -3am whatever you like. Not to mention, a good library as well.During prep. time a lot of teachers visit academic block so that students may clear their doubts regarding specific subjects.Different steps used to be taken to benefit academically weak students, like extra classes, mentoring etc.Discipline is paramount being a defence oriented school. Very rarely exceptions are made. Students are expected to be presentable, polite, well mannered gentlemen.Apart from academics there are seriously a hell lot of co-curricular activites, including, debates, declamations, essay writing, GK quiz, story writing, painting, music, art and craft, prepared and extempore speeches etc.Likewise a hell lot of extra curricular acitivites too, including games, sports, athletics, leadership opportunities ( there was a whole set of 16 appointments to represent students ), NCC, rigorous physical training etc. There are inter-house competitions (which used to be really fierce) in almost all the activities mentioned above. Different houses put their whole and soul to win as many events as they could. Teaching students winning attitude and never-say-die spirit. There are also educational tours and adventure trips like mountain climbing , cycling, camps, kayaking, etc.So overall a student of Sainik School Tilaiya is expected to have a lot of qualities, a sound academic record and physcial strength. As far as defence-related skills are concerned, whole schedule and environment is based on defence academies like the National Defence Academy ( loosely) and then there is NCC which includes daily parades and drills.Daily uniform is Khaki and everything we do is somehow related to defence.Sainik Schools are governed by Ministry of Defence, India and all three top authorities are defence officers. You can consider Sainik Schools as mini defence establishments and that explains the rigorous physical exercises. Some people think that extreme physical training hampers academics but I never felt so, and think that one has to find just the right balance. This much is not enough to describe the exact environment, which to me was AWESOME. I always find anecdotes relating to my SST days and all my close friends are used to this ( often they get frustrated that how I have a story of SST related to every possible topic :P ). I am sure every tilaiyan you meet will be similar in this aspect.I may have left a lot of things, but in short I loved every moment spent in SST and it defines who I am now and what I will be tomorrow.Forward Ever SST.

What are the tips and best books for preparing NTSE?

Being an NTSE scholar of 2017, I think I am eligible to answer this question. One more that I would like to mention. This is a no BS answer (like some of the ones on Quora). I am not promoting my website, YouTube channel or coaching institute. All this is my own experience and observations.Let us begin then. The answer, for convenience, is divided into 2 parts, for Stage-1 and for Stage-2.Further more I'll categorise students into 3 categories-A - Those who have excellent fundamentals and have qualified (or could have qualified) exams like NSEJS (or above), RMO (or PRMO).B - Students who have been consistent toppers of their respective classes (in school) and are willing to go the extra mile.C - Those who don't think of themselves as especially bright or have heard about NTSE just a few weeks back.STAGE-1A - Just buy your State Board Social Sciences book and read History and Geography very seriously. Moreover start practicing MAT on daily basis. Solve previous year MAT papers of other states. That's all. No need of RS Aggarwal (MAT one) as of now. Just make sure you are not overconfident and maintain at least 16/20 marks in Maths and 35/40 marks in science.B - You now may have realised that you have really awesome competitors (A) and it would be a challenge to beat them. The State Board Social Sciences book and MAT strategy is the same for all (even C). However you should work on your Maths and Science part. For this you should start by clearing your basics. For Science, read books by MTG and solve them. For Maths, solve the good questions of RD Sharma (normally the solved examples and HOTS. The Exercises usually don't involve new concept).C - Just forget about A and B. Get the State Board Social Sciences books and read. Just read. Highlight important points. Solve back exercises. You must have realised that beating A and B for Science and Maths is difficult. Wreck those A guys with your SST knowledge. Give extreme emphasis on MAT. Target at least 45+/50 in MAT. Follow the same strategy for Maths and Science as B and make sure you are scoring at least 13/20 in Maths and 30–33/40 in Science.STAGE-2It's high time that the level of knowledge and problem solving aptitude needs to be increased. The questions, even Social Science, require logical approaches. Now for the tips.MAT - Solve incessant amount of questions. Now is the correct time to get RS Aggarwal. But wait there's more. Don't straight away start practicing from it. First do 3–4 mock tests and identify your weak areas. Practice only those parts from the book. Rest of you MAT should be strengthened by giving mock tests regularly.English - Nothing required.SST - Read all the chapters of IX & X NCERTs with rigour. Try to maintain the exact order as the chapters are interconnected sometimes. Assimilate all the information you read.Biology - Study the topics of IX/X NCERT in greater depths. Read from XI Biology and X MTG.Chemistry - Read the first 3 chapters of XI NCERT and solve the exemplars. If you have started the PCM/B preparation, solve mole concept from RC Mukherjee. If you have opted for Commerce/Humanities then solve XI NCERT Exemplar for Mole, Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding.Physics - Try to cover topics. Don't go for depth now. Just know the basics formulas. Learn the derivations and satisfy your mind later.Maths - Here's a little secret. Solve AHMSE papers. They are available online as Contest Problem Books. They will increase your problem solving skills. Moreover cover Algebra, especially theory of equations and Series and Sequences. For A - Now's not the time to get cocky. Read SST and Biology properly. Solve MAT papers daily. For B - SST and Biology marks are more easily obtained than PCM. Focus on them. For C - Having qualified Stage 1, you now belong to B.Few general tips -Try to know the basics of everything. Be the Jack of all trades before trying to be a Master of one.Don't go for TMH, Arihant, coaching packages. Most of them are made unnecessarily thick, just to appeal the buyer. I have already mentioned all that is needed.Buy a GK book, around a month before Stage 1. The one by Arihant (costs ₹30 something, by Manohar Pandey ) is enough in my opinion. Don't read unnecessary stuff. Read/revise the relevant part of Biology, Geography, Civics and Economics from it.There would be times when you have to choose between NTSE and 10th Class. Set your priorities. In Stage 1, attempt all the questions in the end. In Stage 2, maintain ultimate accuracy. I know a guy with 76.33 score in Stage 2, cutoff 77.Target 140+ marks for Stage 1. You should end up getting at least 135. Target 100+ marks for Stage 2. You'll end up getting 85+ for sure. Please, please don't make silly mistakes and fill the OMR along side. The preparation would be wasted otherwise. I personally know a friend, who didn't qualify only because he couldn't fill the OMR completely.Take care of your health.Bhai pe bharosa rakho :) (trans. Have some trust on me) What all I said is 100% correct. Please it’s my humble request, follow my tips. I gurantee that their proper execution would be sufficient for your happy faces, smiles on the result day.TL;DRRead SST and solve MAT very properly for both the stages.Thank You!P.S. MTG books refer to the Foundation course books for classes IX and X of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, NOT Maths . RD Sharma for IX & X is sufficient for Maths.P.S. I think that the strategy of Stage 2 preparation is pretty clear. For tips for Stage 1 preparation, check out my other answer. Kartikeya Mayank's answer to How can I clear NTSE Stage-1?

France and the UK gave us the Concorde. Why was the USA never involved with this? Can the USA with its technology develop or maybe better the Concorde?

Q: France and the UK gave us the Concorde. Why was the USA never involved with this? Can the USA with its technology develop or maybe better the Concorde?A: This is not just a technical issue, but also an economical, political and practical issue.Sure, the US had the technology to build huge supersonic aircraft. Just look at the North American XB-70 Valkyrie – it is basically a passenger cabin away (rather than a bomb bay) from being a supersonic transport. So why didn’t they?XB-70 managed to get in the air because the project was started before ballistic and cruise missiles became the dominant means of dropping nukes on the enemy, and even when missiles started to dominate, the project was so far underway that there was a point in finishing it as a research aircraft. So two prototypes were built.XB-70 ValkyrieBut what about supersonic transports? In the 1960s, it was generally believed that the next step in passenger aviation was supersonic. The idea was to scale up a supersonic fighter and put passengers in it. It sounded like a commercially viable at the time, so everyone looked into it.State-owned Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale and Airbus) worked on one project (Super-Caravelle), and Bristol Aeroplane Company worked on another (Type 223). They realised that they were very similar and that they did not have the resources to do it alone. So the French and British government agreed to enter a joint project, which became the Aérospatiale/British Aircraft Corporation Concorde. The deal between France and Britain made it unlawful to pull out, and also a matter of national prestige. So by law and prestige: they had to finish the project, no matter what.Concorde limited its speed to Mach 2, because that was as much as regular aircraft materials could handle. And even with this, Concorde needed to compensate for thermal expansion, so to the point that the entire flight deck is separated from the airframe, and the instruments of the flight engineer moved forward from the bulkhead by several inches in flight. There was a Concorde painted in Pepsi colours as a commercial stunt, and its blue paint absorbed so much heat that it could not fly faster than Mach 1.5.Also, far into the 1970s, it was still believed to be commercially viable.Aérospatiale/BAC ConcordeThe Soviet Union also entered the race for supersonic transport, and handed the task to the Tupolev design bureau. Their job was to deliver a supersonic transport before Concorde, no matter the cost. They kind of succeeded: the prototype for Tu-144 flew about half a year before Concorde, and that was basically all that the Politburo had asked. They did cut corners enormously to do it – the Tu-144 was loud, noisy, inefficient (it didn’t have supercruise) and was plagued by technical problems when in operation. But since all it had to do was to fly before Concorde and be a supersonic passenger jet, that didn’t matter very much. The Tu-144 was never commercially viable. It was a prestige project that could only be successful in the Soviet Union, and only if you defined “successful” by the key performance indicators set up by the Politburo.Tupolev Tu-144, when used by NASA as a supersonic research aircraftThe United States also had an idea of a supersonic transport. But by political mandate, it had to carry twice as many passengers as the Concorde and fly at Mach 3.Here it was a matter of national prestige and federal grants, combined with commercial viability. The contenders entered the project hoping to make a profit in the end, thanks to backing by the government. However, in the light of Concorde and Tu-144, and because it was the cold war and there was a lot of dick-waving about, the government stipulated that the SST, Super-Sonic Transport, must have twice the passengers of its competitors and fly 50% faster.Remember that Concorde was on the edge of what was possible with regular materials; SST wanted to go 50% beyond that.Sure, as the XB-70 and the SR-71 showed, it is technically possible to go beyond that, but only using exotic materials and very complicated technology. One design involved swing wings, and the Boeing engineers eventually made it clear to the board that they could choose between swing wings and passengers. Problems like that made the different SST projects way more expensive than the Concorde, and the only way they could succeed was with government funding. And eventually, government funding dried up. Unlike the Anglo-French treaty which made it illegal to withdraw, all it took was a stroke of the pen to stop the SST project as Congress scrapped funding. And then there is one more nail in the coffin for the US SST project:Boeing 747 prototypeYep, the Boeing-747. It could fly more passengers than any other aircraft, for a cheaper cost per passenger-mile, with more room, and more importantly, fast enough. Why cross the Atlantic in three and a half hour when you could do it in eight but with more comfort and a piano bar?The 747 was not just one paradigm shift in aviation, but two:It broke the trajectory towards faster and faster planes. It made international air travel available to everyone. In short: the 747 completely transformed the economics and availability of air travel, and democratised it. As soon as it set to the air and was available to the air lines, the only way that Concorde could succeed was as a luxury item. It was very successful in this way, especially for British Airways. But it also meant that the market for Concorde was severely limited, and eventually dried up to only BA and Air France. The other airlines pulled out, and went for the cost per passenger-mile paradigm instead. And it also meant that there was no interest whatsoever in the US SST project.Does that mean that the Concorde a failure? No, I don’t think so. And this is why:Even though the Concorde no longer flies, it is still the national pride of both UK and France.Questions like these show that there is a Concorde-shaped hole in our collective minds, even for non-Anglo-French. And we’re trying to fill that hole, even if it can only be done by formation flying. That’s the impact of Concorde.
