The ending of Oblivion (2013) is going to lead directly to a massive Tom Cruise orgy, or possibly a bloodbath.In this film, Cruise plays an engineer (known as ‘Tech 49’) who is responsible for securing and protecting equipment in a designated area of earth.It later turns out that 49 is actually a weaponised clone, and many, many versions of him were created by an alien invader in order to conquer the earth. 49 has had his memories wiped, however he has frequent flashbacks of a woman.When investigating a crashed pod, 49 finds the woman from his dream. She tells him that she is Julia, the wife of the original Cruise, and explains about the aliens. They later come across another clone named 52, who promptly gets knocked unconscious.49 and Julia fall in love. 49 eventually teams up with some rebels and destroys the aliens, but dies in the process. Julia moves to a picturesque cabin which 49 secretly built years ago. A few years later, 52 manages to find the cabin, explaining that he’d been drawn there because he knew 49’s mind. It’s implied that they live happily ever after.But…… for the clones we meet to be 49 and 52, that means there must be at least 50 other Clone Cruises wandering around out there. There are probably many more than that because it’s implied that the aliens were guarding the entire surface of the earth - even with superfast alien ships you can’t do that with 52 men, therefore there are probably thousands of Cruises out there, all having visions of Julia, all being drawn inexorably to the same place because they all ‘know’ 49’s mind just as well as 52 did, all bound to fall hopelessly in love with her when they finally get there.What happens when you put thousands of genetically engineered super soldiers in the same place and make them all fall in love with the same woman? I don’t know, but I’m assuming either a massively complicated ‘rota’ system or a horrific fight to the death.Either way, being converged on by thousands of horny, laser rifle wielding Tom Cruises is not my idea of a good time.
