PDF Editor FAQ

If your plane was crashing in the middle of the ocean, would you parachute out and take your unlikely chances of survival or go down with the plane?

Everyone would agree that it is better to ditch with an aircraft then jump.1st: the technical let’s agree we are talking about a civilian plane (military has emergency survival gear, etc) & single, multiple, or total engine failure…. This assumption is due to the nature of force and your ability to even have the choice in the case of spins cause from bad controls, damage, etc….You ditch it….. “Sh*t, lost my thrust, but I’m over the ocean…., could be worse…. I am on radar & my emergency locator transmitter would begin its reporting on impact, on civilian frequency 121.5, allowing search and rescue to triangulate my position. I am over the water, so being law abiding I have a raft on board, along with other survival materials. I don’t have any approach pattern and have as much open distance where the terrain is still OCEAN”Following my checklist for emergency water landing and send out my mayday as I follow a plane for maximum glide distance (losing altitude to keep speed and trim for this setting. Wheels up if possible…. Once completed, I would personally decend faster so I can flare at two points…. Once to fly steady at a level I could examine the currents and then turn so the heading is optimized for water landing based on current. And then begin my approach. If I filed a flight plan, then the authorities have all my pertinent info (make, model, color, and equipment…. Souls aboard, route, departure time, and current time). If not I would announce one last mayday giving position as known, souls aboard, estimated position and registration or “N#”, I would also keep the microphone key down that last message. Why? It’s the emergency frequency. It’s the same your your locator transmitter uses! Now they have the information, and even if my ELT doesn’t go off, I know my signal is being triangulated…. Just because that’s what it is their for. Rescue will find you…. And you’ll make due until they do with your gear. Why not jump…. First, once you hit the water you could die from your canopy, second, no gear. Good luck surviving, water pulls heat from the body 20x faster then air…. 3rd how will anyone know where to find you, they will be looking at the wrong place when the ELT goes off. And 4th,it is much easier to see a downed plane or BRIGHT yellow or orange raft in the water…

For a vehicle purchased from a dealer, how long does it take to get the registration and title by mail from DMV California?

My last purchase, the dealer signed the title over to me, right there, as soon as I handed them the check. (They had already checked that I had the funds in my account.) The dealer was part of some DMV network where they could do the registration process; they were the ones who printed my official registration right there, once it was processed. I don’t know why more dealers don’t use it. They told me they can issue tags too, if they were expired. The DMV sent the new title about 2 weeks later. They did not send a new registration.Later this year, the CA DMV is requiring all dealers and financial institutions to join ELT — electronic lienholders and transfer — so there probably won’t be a paper title for long.

If a private plane (hobby cessna) was flying, how would you contact it by radio if you didn't know the person? How is it's frequency identified?

As other answers have pointed out, correctly guessing the frequency a plane might be listening on is fun, but transmitting from (say) a handheld scanner is illegal, so you’d want to have a very good reason. If you can’t afford a scanner, try Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications and try some frequencies in your local area. I fly out of KEMT (Flight Planning / Aeronautical Charts), on this chart you can see that planes inside KEMT’s E airspace are on 121.2, 125.9 (if on the ground), and the local area practice frequencies are 123.3 (mostly trainer planes) and 123.025 (mostly police helicopters), depending on altitude. The local SoCal frequency is 125.5, which is used to coordinate IFR traffic and usually very busy. There are some other frequencies which are sometimes used by pilots to talk to each other, such as 123.45, or the local CTAF frequency. Around Catalina, pilots use 122.7 to coordinate with each other, but you can also hear other nearby airports that use the same frequency. As you can see, if you transmit, someone will be listening and recording, and you will be noticed.Planes are typically hailed by their tail number, or perhaps just the last 3 digits. If you type it into google, you can find out some information about the planes. Eg, I sometimes fly Cessna 89084. Here’s some data about it: N89084 Aircraft Registration ✈ FlightAwareThere are some websites that track the position of airliners, so you can make a good guess about what a distant jet might be, or where it’s come from.121.5 is the emergency frequency. Emergency location transponders (ELT) also transmit on this frequency, so if you were assisting with a search and rescue operation, you would tune to 121.5 and try to find (eg) a missing plane. Sometimes the ELT is triggered by a very rough landing, so it’s wise to check 121.5 before you shut down. Most ELT calls are for undamaged planes. When the local authorities show up they will break the plane window to turn off the false alarm, which is potentially annoying! If the plane is a long way from an airport, they may not be monitoring the radio at all. If you are in an emergency situation (say lost or broken down or stuck while hiking), it is acceptable to flash them with light reflected from a phone or CD or mirror, or a flashlight - they can report your position on radio. Never shoot a laser at a plane, it can dazzle and/or harm the pilot. If you need visibility from the air, try to use blues and reds and shiny stuff, rather than greens, hiding under the trees. If you think a pilot has done something wrong, you can write down the tail number (you may need binoculars) and report it to the authorities. But be wary of this approach, pilots are generally responsible and law abiding, and causing a huge bureaucratic headache for them will ruin their whole day. Being able to fly private aircraft is a rare legal privilege (the US is almost unique in this) and a way of life that is under threat from a myriad of factors. In many other countries, only the police and military get to fly.
