What schools accepted/rejected you (April 2020)?

I am a first gen student who immigrated from a small country in 2008. My race counts as White and Asian. I went to a magnet public high school where my magnet, or major was in Business. Here’s my stats and what schools I got into:STATS:SAT- 1470, 730 M, 740, R & WNo subject tests taken or submittedGPA - 3.88/4.0Rank- 2/26414 AP classes taken; got a 5 on six of them, 4 on one of them, and a 3 on one; I have not taken an exam for the rest of them yetEXTRACURRICULARS:SGA Vice PresidentVolunteer at local mosqueInvolved in FBLA, Environmental Club, and NHS, and held leadership positions in all in junior or senior yearRegional Student Council Board member for 3 yearsRegional Student Council Co- Committee Chair in senior yearState Student Council Workshop PresenterSUMMERS:I was visiting my home country in the summer of freshman & sophomore yearI held a summer job at our mall in the summer of junior yearHONORS:4x regional competitive event 1st place in FBLA1x state competitive event 1st place in FBLAESSAY:I talked about what advocacy meant for me. Immigrating here at a young age, I had to learn English quickly and I became an advocate for my parents as they did not know English. This advocacy carried on with me in high school where I was actively involved in student council. I said I hope to continue this advocacy in the future by helping those in third world countries, like the one I come from.REJECTIONS:UPENN (applied through QuestBridge early action )YALE (applied through QuestBridge regular decision)GEORGETOWN ( regular decision)WAITLISTED:JOHNS HOPKINS ( regular decision)ACCEPTED:UMD COLLEGE PARK (early action)UMBC (early action)PRINCETON UNIVERSITY (applied through QuestBridge regular decision)OVERALL THOUGHTS:I was honestly really down after not getting into Georgetown and JHU. But I’m so thankful that I got into Princeton. I think the fact that Princeton has been trying to increase their diversity and their pool of low income students definetly helped me get in. I think having a theme that ties in all your extracurriculars and your essay can make your application stand out. My common theme was business and student council, and my essay was about advocacy, which was on point with my message that I am a student who has been interested in advocacy and will use my privilege that I’ve gotten from immigrating here in order to help those in poorer countries through business practices such as micro financing , empowerment though entrepreneurship, and sustainable local business.

Who is the most impressive Ivy League applicant you've come across that still didn't get into any Ivy League school?

Over my long career as a high school calculus teacher, I’ve taught many students who were accepted into Ivy League schools. But there were three students who were just as impressive whose lack of admission mystified me.Female, black, born in America. She applied to Stanford and Johns Hopkins (not Ivy League schools but equally prestigious), and a few backup schools. She scored a 1580 on the SAT and developed two apps during her senior year of high school. Both her father and grandfather graduated from Stanford. And yet, Stanford turned her down. She’s now a senior at Johns Hopkins.Female, middle eastern, born in Syria. Her family escaped Syria and legally immigrated to America. She is without a doubt the most talented calculus student I’ve taught in the past 30 years. She made perfect scores on BOTH the ACT and SAT! Her resume was impeccable. She was turned down by Cal Tech and MIT. She was accepted by Vanderbilt and is now pursuing her PhD.Male, white, born in America. He applied to only three universities; Harvard, Princeton, and Duke. He scored a perfect 36 in all four ACT sections, was president of the school’s student council, the National Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, and the Drama Club, and was fluent in Mandarin Chinese, self-taught. He was turned down by Harvard and Princeton, and accepted by Duke. He now works for NASA.You might also be interested in:The most tragic student I ever witnessedWhat happened to my high school bully who didn’t take his education seriouslyThe reason so many teachers are bad teachers

How do I start student council in university?

It’s very important for my college application.Really? Is this what is all about? If you don’t show genuine interest for your school and your classmates, people will perceive you as a fraud, and nobody will vote for you. Perhaps, if you REALLY care about your school and how you can help your fellow students, your classmates will appreciate your effort and vote for you to represent them.
