PDF Editor FAQ

Who are some Africans we should know?

Dr. Ameyo Stella AdadevohThe name definitely rings a bell for us in Nigeria. But for many in Africa and the rest of the world, Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh is the name of the Nigerian physician who risked her life to protect the country from a full fledged Ebola outbreak in 2014.She oversaw the treatment of Patrick sawyer, the Liberian national who brought the virus to Nigeria .She vehemently turned down a request from the Liberian government and sawyer to have him discharged so he could catch a flight to calabar, a coastal city 750km from Lagos. Where he needed to attend a conference. (we are left to imagine what would have happened had sawyer been allowed to leave for calabar)From the moment Dr Adadevoh suspected sawyer might have Ebola, even when he denied having contact with anyone that has the virus. (it was later realised that his sister had died from the virus 2 weeks before he traveled to Nigeria and he was with her till she gave up) she quarantined him, made contact with the authorities and ensured protective materials were available. Even though Nigeria wasn't ready at the time for such an outbreak, she helped curb it .A lot of people might say she was only doing her job as a medical professional. But she had various options in front of her when she discovered the first Ebola case in her place of work. She could have just decided not to make it her business and discharge him to avoid contaminating their hospital or to refer him to Lagos State teaching hospital where provisions for an out break was not in place and where he could have contacts with more people. But she chose to put her life at risk to save Nigerians Not minding that she was going to be affected by the virus. As a result of her keen perception, courage and steadfastness, all 20 Ebola cases in Nigeria were traced to a single path of transmission and her heroic effort prevented a major outbreak in the most populous African country.Though she died after 10 days of contact with the Liberian, I/we still see her as our HERO.Rest in peace Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh.

When was the last time that something like the current coronavirus happened?

I would say the ebola crisis. But they have a vaccine now. Though there are various strains of the ebola. But yeah people were falling down dead and with no idea how they got the virus. Though I note with care and especially hydration the american cases survived. The collapse of the Liberian medical system played a part. Sick people literally on the floor. Doctors without borders built a lot of hum, care facilities? And this made a great deal of difference. And the American armed forces built a bunch of care housing.. not a hospital in the sense you find in America. But beds for the sick and the ability to give them saline and cool clothes for the fever helped a lot.

What is an experience with TSA/airport security that you will never forget?

What is an experience with TSA/airport security that you will never forget?A nurse I know was going on a church related medical mission to Africa. This is something I had enthusiasm for as it provided some challenges. What useful items could I provide that would be of great value in a place without much. Each person was taking a duffle bag filled with medical supplies and other things to distribute to those at the clinic. The duffle bag I provided the nurse was one I’d been on deployments with in the Army. It was filled with all sorts of items, ranging from protein bars, to medical supplies and such. I also provided, in this checked baggage, a Gerber multitool. What I did with that one was I worked it repeatedly, adjusted the ‘screws’ so it could be easily handled with one hand and flicked open but it was otherwise new. These things can be incredibly handy when one doesn’t have many tools. The intention was that everything brought would be left behind so this one Gerber multitool was due for one heck of a useful service life!Well, it was, as I wrote, in the checked baggage. A TSA tag was on the bag, in the grommets so the bag wasn’t opened at the airport before customs. When it was opened customs in Liberia they had each person with their bags, and they had to dump out the contents. The multitool was gone! There was NO need for TSA to take out the multitool in checked bags and there’s no prohibition on it but the bastards stole it!Think about that, some TSA piece of shit stole it.At the airport and afterwards, different levels of government, again at the tarmac began the process of telling people to dump the contents, the officials taking what they wanted. The over stuffed bags, originally hard to repack were getting more empty by the time each layer and check point went through it, so the multitool would likely have been stolen by some Liberian official or armed thug with AK credentials anyway. But the point is, the TSA piece of shit is as bad as an AK totting thug at a jungle road block.Worse, actually, the guy in the jungle is living on the edge. The TSA guy is punching a clock for a Fed agency that hasn’t done shit of value for it’s intended purpose and he’s making good money while stealing and he doesn’t need to.How bad was the process of dump the bag’s contents so they can steal? The nurse is about 5′4″ tall, and varies between a size 3 and a size 5, so not a big woman, she easily carried the duffle bag by it’s backpack up through an uphill jungle trail in that heat because there wasn’t that much left after the airport thieves and checkpoint bandits. Now a few interesting points:The Nurse told me that when they complained about the items stolen by the officials, including the TSA theft of the multitool, the locals told them that the Gerber multitool, given away, would have gotten someone killed. It was one thing for those passing through to have things, but day after day, a local having it would have someone covet and be envious of the thing and likely kill that person. The locals were the most interested in not the remaining medication, medical supplies, few canned food items (I sent tinned butter!) but the duffle bag! The duffle bag which served me during a REFORGER around 1989 likely saw good use many years later in Africa. The final note is a tragedy. All the LOCAL medical staff members they made friends with died from helping their patients during the E’bola outbreak which happened a while later.
