No question - it’s the F-16. It has been the workhorse of the US Air Force, even today. Introduced in 1973, it flew over half the missions against Iraq & ISIS in Syria.Originally conceived as the Light Weight Fighter, over 4,500 have been built, over a 40+ year period, and it’s still in production today. Bahrain just bought some that have yet to be delivered, and the US Air Force has ordered upgrades to keep F-16s in service until 2048. It’s the plane that won’t die.That’s about 75 years of cost effective air superiority, but then who’s counting?It has a thrust to weight ratio of greater than 1:1, (1.25:1 with 50% fuel). It can pull 9+ Gs, will do Mach 2.0+, has the signature frameless look-down bubble canopy, and it introduced fly-by-wire integrated servo-actuators and carbon fiber control surfaces.Because the airframe had to endure high-rate turns, it has very good wing loading capability, which makes it quite useful as a bomber. Without all 11 hard points loaded, per design, is an air-to-air superiority jet fighter that can survive more Gs than the humans that fly it.In the F-16, it’s the pilot (not the airframe) that causes the most binding constraints to be loaded into the fly-by-wire flight control system. Learning that was when the Air Force got excited, and started talking about human-less drones.In a fly-off competition with the Northrup F-17 back in the early 70’s, the F-16 was the one picked as the main jet fighter by not only the US Air Force, but also by 4 NATO partners (Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, and Norway). Today, about 25 countries fly the F-16. FYI: The Norwegian version has a tailhook for icy runways.Oh, did I mention, the F-16 has been the plane for the Air Force Thunderbirds for decades? The T-Birds have been around for 66 years, if you include the subsonic F-86 they started with. The F-16 has been their ride for the last 36 of those 66 years.NASA took an early F-16 for a program called CCV (Controlled Configuration Vehicle) to introduce composites (for weight reduction), canards (for additional pitch & yaw limits), and a high-acceleration cockpit (to tilt the pilot back in high-rate turns, addressing blood flow beyond that which normal humans in g-suits can survive).The Air Force took that to the next level with the AFTI (Advanced Fighter Technology Integration) program to introduce a bendable barrel 30mm Vulcan cannon (vs the fixed bore-sight 20mm), and the IFFC (Integrate Flight Control/Fire Control) system whch put those 2 black boxes on a 64-bit bus so that the missie radar weapon system could fly the plane.With all that, the F-16 proved that a supersonic jet fighter could also pitch much more up & down, and yaw much more left & right, turn the cannon into a what’s effectively bad-ass shot gun pattern, let the missles fly the plane, and get bigger target circles on the heads-up display, just waiting for the pilot to pull the trigger. Killer stuff. Air-to-air, or air-to-ground runway/hangar straffing.After the 1974 fly-off competition, and the 1975 Paris Air Show, and the 1976 NATO sales, the General Dynamics F-16 was nicknamed “Falcon”, and the Northrup F-17 was nicknamed “Loser” (by us at GD).Per Wikipedia “Although it [the f-17] lost the LWF competition to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the YF-17 was selected for the new Naval Fighter ... The F-16 is not as stealthy, and it is not as loaded with electronics, but the F-35 proponents in the Air Force (and Lockheed/Martin) still had some egg on their face.That brings up the issue of price/performance. Yes, the F-15 will out perform the F-16 in speed, ceiling, loading, range, etc. but, it has two (did I say 2) of those Pratt & Whitney F100 engines, and cost aproximately twice as much. The F-15 is pure Air Superiority, and sometimes that’s what you need, but the F-16 is very close to F-15 performance in a number of measures, and is Multi-Role, and cost about half as much.Greatness comes in all forms in supersonic jet fighters, including speed, ceiling, maneuverability, range, payload, uptime, price/performance, etc. While the F-16 did not necessarily have the record in any one category, it was damn close in several categories, and that might explain why there have been over 4,500 built, vs. 1,200 F-15.Just for fun, here’s a diagram of the F-16 which reflected how we prepared the bid, follow-on bids, and how we managed production.
