As an American, having lived and worked in VC in Germany, I feel I am in a unique position to answer the question.From an investor's perspective:Rocket Internet is by far the largest player in internet investing in Germany. They are invested in 6/7 billion dollar startups in Germany, and have 4x the capital of the 2nd largest player.Rocket Internet has €1.7b cash and cash equivalents on its balance sheet, €420m that it manages as part of its ECP fund and another €650 in Global Founders Capital. Together the Samwer brothers control €2.8b.Rocket internet has participated in 16/20, or 80% of funding rounds over €50m. This is partly because they participate in more capital intensive businesses.The valuation of rocket companies is 3x what a normal company is raising at in Germany. (anecdotal) You could argue that this is justified because of the fundraising support, marketing support, tech and sales support they receive.Rocket is extremely dilution sensitive. They start out owning 90% of their businesses, and only sell small pieces at high valuations to outside investors.Rocket is mainly an eCommerce player. When you have over a billion dollars of capital to deploy, you can use that to your advantage in eCommerce. For example, if you were starting a messaging service, you simply wouldn’t need that much cash.Most of Rockets startups are in Asia and Africa. They have 6200 employees in Europe, 4300 in Russia & CIS, 5700 in Africa & Middle East, and 13,800 in Asia Pacific.Most of their growth comes from food related businesses. One major US VC investor recently described this to me as “…they [Rocket] have polluted the waters”It is, however, remarkable what Rocket Internet has done. I know of no other company in the world that has achieved this level of dominance in a diverse number of industries and product categories.My hope is that Rocket can build infrastructure in emerging markets (that would not happen otherwise) and that people will benefit from its products and services in that way. For example in Africa/India- there is no DHL, UPS or FedEx. Having a well capitalized, experienced player building a business there can be transformative for a local economy.Hope this helps!
