Is it normal in most apartments for maintenance guys to just come in without notice to fix things?Depends on the tenancy laws where you live (you did not identify a country, province, canton, state, etc.)In BC, Canada, landlords are required by law to provide 24 hours WRITTEN notice to enter a rental property for ANYTHING. A tenant can invite the landlord or agent into their residence at any time - for example to fix something broken.

Can a landlord let themselves into an occupied property unannounced if tenants are late on rent and don't respond to calls?Not in BC.We have to give 24 hours written notice to enter an occupied apartment, unless there is an emergency situation (first responders needing access).

Not a dinner at home, but a large 40th birthday party held at a banquet hall. We were offered food, but definitely not dinner. A friend threw herself a large bday party (about 100–125 people). Invite said the party starts at 7:00 and will go until midnight. Because she’s a wedding planner, she’s “in good” with many vendors, including the banquet hall. Plus she received some things free since she was giving them free advertising to so many people that night. She does everything completely “over the top” so we were all very excited to see what she had planned and expected all this and more. As we entered the place, we saw there was a division set up. We assumed they’d open that area when dinner would be served. There were 2 bars on each end of the room, a backdrop area to get professional pics with the birthday girl, and many people serving hor d’oeuvres. We ate a few, but didn’t want to fill up before dinner. A few of the same waiters would return to us numerous times, yet we refused each time. Finally one told us that THIS was dinner!! I asked what was behind the partition and they said that was for dancing and dessert. So at this point, we’re now desperately trying to flag down any waiter with food. We didn’t think that soup in shot glasses, meatballs, small skewers of chicken, “cups” of flavored popcorn, and mini fruit salads served in martini glasses would be our meals. By the time we realized that this was our dinner, they had stopped bringing out food…and all the guests hadn’t even arrived yet…knowing it would be a dinner and late night of dancing, many people came late and got nothing!The bday girl then held a raffle to win gifts from the many vendors she had there (DJ, photographer, videographer, “caterers”, decor company, and even some clothing/jewelry vendors). She then opened the partition where she first went to a large table to blow out her candles on her 4-tiered cake (after she put her tiara on). We all had been standing/walking in high heels for 3 hours at this point and there were still no tables to sit at to eat cake or ice cream that was self-serving. There were 2 round sofas that everyo fought to sit at to give our feet a break. We literally took turns. So many didn’t eat anything bc they were expecting a full dinner. Women may love cake and ice cream, but not enough after taking hours getting ready, driving there, standing in our heels for hours and not getting a meal at all. Barely anyone danced because they were so hungry or in pain. Most of us all left right after that and went to the nearest McDonald’s. I’m sure they were shocked to see so many of us, all dolled up in our beautiful dresses, and over half of us were in bare feet at this point. Of all the big bday parties, this was the one that everybody anticipated and expected an over the top dinner. Sadly, the host truly didn’t see or notice how we all felt. She wore her tiara, loved the attention, constantly got on the mic to thank over and over again all the vendors, and took a million pics (and posted EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. on Facebook). If you plan to not serve dinner (whether it’s appetizers or nothing at all), you should say so on the invite. It’s easy to say: “please join me for cocktails and cake to celebrate my bday”. It’s polite and tells the guests what to expect. At least we all would have eat at home before going.EDIT: WOW!!! I don’t write as much as I’d like to on Quora (due to my health), but it’s a great outlet for me to vent and “write” since I love to write and “talk” about things I normally can’t do.
