Why do many liberals think Obamacare is a success?
The US healthcare system is fucked. I have some very personal experience with it, and with the Canadian healthcare system. On December 22, 2011 I was skiing at Kicking Horse Mountain in Golden BC, Canada. I had a high speed fall. My brother in law took this photo of the ski patrol checking me over before taking me to the bottom of the hill and an ambulance. I am on a spinal board. After a difficult and painful 3 hour ambulance ride to a University hospital in Calgary Alberta, a CT scan confirmed that I had crushed 2 vertebrae in the middle of my back. Luckily I had no spinal cord damage. However I was in extreme pain and was bed ridden and in hospital. I stayed in hospital for 6 days, and received a clamping style back brace I had to wear at all times except when prone. I had great care while in the Canadian medical system. A short 12 days after the accident I was able to return home to the US. Once home I received a $25,000 bill for my hospital stay. The cost was $4000 per day, all in. There were no additional bills from doctors, no Xray or CT scan bills, and no bills for toilet paper or Kleenex. If you have stayed in a hospital in the US, you know this is much much cheaper then in the US.I contacted my Anthem health insurance to cover the $25,000 USD. Anthem had been informed the day I arrived in the hospital. Anthem refused to cover the hospital stay. Then they demanded itemized lists that Canadian hospitals do not provide (flat rate of $4000/day CAD). That is where it started screw with us, but there were many more issues and roadblocks they put in our way. It took countless phone calls and regular support from our insurance broker to help deal with the deflection, avoidance, busy work, mis-quoting of plan terms and generally passive aggressive resistance to any forward movement of the claim. Getting the claim paid became a second job for my wife. It took 5 months to get it paid, and there was something done on that file 4 out of 5 days each week. We paid $700-800 per month, had a $2500 deductible per person and a $5000 deductible in total for the family. In the 7 years we lived in the US we paid approximately $63,000 in premiums plus all yearly costs below $2500 per person up to $5000, plus other user fees. We only reached $5000 in 2 out of the 7 years. Health insurers and US hospitals definitely represent one of the worst parts of our experience living in the US. We did meet some great health practitioners there, but the system is fucked. As a Canadian, if I had been living in Canada at the time of my accident, I would have been covered under Canada’s Universal Healthcare. My hospital bill would have been $0. Our insurance PITA hassle factor, 0, the healthcare received, great. You Americans are lied to by your doctors, your for profit hospitals, your congress, your big pharma and most of all your health insurance industry. I can buy 2 epi pens in Canada for $100, the exact same product costs Americans $400 to $600. Why? A Radiologist reads a CT Scan in Canada for 20% what a Radiologist charges in the US, why? A stay in a modern Canadian hospital is $4000 per day, in the US it is $12,000-$25,000 per day, why?The massive massive profits from healthcare in the USA are derived from the suffering of your fellow Americans. There is a reason why no other modern nation has a US style healthcare system. Because your system is fucked.Update: A commenter asked what this has to do with ACA, good question. If you look at the dates, you will notice my accident happened before ACA came into place. By the time ACA website was actually working I had been back in Canada for 5 months. All of Canada was cheering for ACA because we thought it would help our neighbours to the south, and it did. The US had 50 million uninsured before ACA, and now there are less than half that number. That is good for the US population. But the ACA did not solve the root problems. All the people insured are stuck with the same bullshit system I dealt with, except many don’t have the resources we did to fight it. US Healthcare is a for profit system where the motivator is not service, it is greed, and it is personal. We have seen with the CEO 4x the price of an epi-pen and when Martin Shkreli increased the price of an AIDS drug by more than 5,000%. This simply does not happen in other countries but this behavior is rampant in the US. This is a behavior that is promoted in the US by the way the US system is structured. Change the system and you get different behaviors. ACA helped, but it just brought more people into a fucked system. The solution? That’s pretty easy since most of the rest of the world is already doing it.Create a single government payer system, impose a single fee for services schedule, impose a fee for pharmaceuticals schedule (govt buys all pharmaceuticals, distributes to pharmacies), impose $300,000 salary caps on doctors, and legislate caps on medical litigation awards. Perhaps buy Kaiser or whichever is the insurance company with the best service culture and leverage their domain knowledge to help implement operations in the single payer system. Start with the smallest state and do 50 roll outs from smallest to largest. As each State became single payer, insurance companies would find something else to do, like supplemental plans for travel, dental, etc. Many would shut down. After the states had been on a single payer system for 2 years we’d then roll out Lean for Healthcare. That’s how I’d do it.

Do Canadian permanent residents get the same healthcare as Canadian citizens?
PR holders in Canada have exactly the same rights as a Canadian citizen and get the same healthcare, pay the same taxes, etc.The Canadian Health Act guarantees access to healthcare for every citizen and permanent resident who spends more than 6 months in a given province. However, this guarantee does not cover tourists and visitors.Healthcare Options for Temporary ResidentsUsually, visitors and transients can receive free care for emergencies. As a temporary resident of Canada, the type of coverage you can receive will depend on the nature of your temporary status. Refugees are generally eligible for healthcare under the Interim Federal Health Program. This program provides healthcare coverage for individuals whose residence status is pending and are not yet eligible for provincial or territorial insurance.Temporary residents who are in Canada on a Work Visa should ordinarily have health care insurance provided by their employer.International students attending school or university in Canada may or may not qualify for public healthcare, depending on the province. Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan all offer healthcare coverage to international students. Specific conditions and requirements vary between provinces. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island and Yukon do not provide coverage for foreign students. In these cases, you may want to look into private health insurance. The only difference between a PR and a citizen is that PRs can not vote or hold sensitive government jobs that require citizenship. One should note that Canadian permanent residency is a misnomer since it is not permanent. However, a PR can get citizenship in only three years of residing in Canada, provided certain conditions are met such as residing in Canada for 3 years out of every 5 years or risk losing their PR status. Additionally, a PR can also have their status stripped from them and deported if they commit a serious criminal offence.A Canadian citizen can seek protection and assistance from the Canadian Embassy/Consulate when they encounter emergencies overseas as well as to seek help from other Commonwealth country’s embassies such as the UK and Australia. A PR will not have this assistance from the Canadian government.
