My absent mindedness helped me clear Maths Olympiad.The only thing common between me and Albert Einstein is the absent mindedness.My mum scolds me, my friends scold me, my colleagues scold me, my business partner scolds me. You can only minimize the damage!This incident tops my list:In 9th standard, I had applied for Maths Olympiad. Someone has told my Mum about it and I was forced to apply. The exam was on a Sunday! I can drag till 80 easily and then make some silly mistakes (absent mindedness maybe).Anyway, so I applied and reached on time for the exam.I sat on my seat, got answering sheets. Received question paper. Glanced it from top to bottom. Many concepts were familiar (nothing unusual yet).Started answering. Things were going rough. Maths Olympiads are usually tough and hence I felt happy to be able to understand the questions. In-fact, I felt that I knew which formula to apply but was not remembering the exact formulas. Trigonometry and arithmetic in particular (something unusual now).The person sitting in front of me asked me some question with an intention to cheat. I couldn't find the question in my paper. We both concluded that the question paper will be shuffled/different for adjacent candidates (something more unusual now).For almost every answer I could only do half the solution. This was not the usual me. Nevertheless, attempted the entire paper. Time's up. Came out. Not many of my friends were there for exam so I left the venue and went back home.Next day in class started discussing with friends about the paper. Few had written. We started discussing each-other about the possible answers. And to my surprise I found that my paper was different from everyone else's. I was flabbergasted. I checked the paper's year. It was correct. I checked if the paper had some versions but there was only one version. Couldn't figure out. It was a classroom discussion for quite sometime! (very unusual)Days passed. Since this was not an important paper, I had not bothered much. However, one evening I just took out the paper to see it again. And to my surprise I found that the Question paper was for 8th standard!!! I HAD ANSWERED 8TH STANDARD PAPER. And that was the reason I could answer most of the questions!Never discussed with my parents about it. And I had lost all hopes of clearing my exam. I was sure that my paper would be disqualified.Months passed. One morning, in the assembly hall they announced the list of people who had cleared Math Olympiad for that year. The list was short. Suddenly my name was announced. Whoa!We were asked to collect the certificates. I had scored 65 of 100. 60 was the eligibility cut-off!Collected the certificate like a boss. Went home, showed it to parents. Got a treat that evening. Ate till neck.Not told about the gimmick to anyone. Until today!
