I applied for teaching jobs when I was 55, which is about the age that most teachers retire.In my first interview, the principal asked where I did my degree in education, while looking at my resume.I picked that university because the drive through the countryside was so pleasant. The next alternative would be travelling 2 hours through dense traffic into a large city by public transit.I said UWO (University of Western Ontario). The principal said, “good. We only hire from Western”.It helped.But what helped more was the fact that I only wanted behaviour classes and not academic classes. That is what got me the job.

Here’s where I’m coming from. I’m from a very, very small town in Alberta. I was educated at McGill in Montreal, Quebec, I spent a while overseas and traveled to a lot of big cities and I now live in the GTA near Hamilton.I’d argue that almost everybody outside of Toronto dislikes Torontonians.I love Toronto because I’ve seen the alternative.Toronto is a series of small towns that disproportionally influence the media, financial and government of Canada. Toronto’s problems are different than those of other regions in Canada.I think that some Torontonians view that disproportionate influence as normal and see their interests as paramount and obvious, not as something to be horse-traded. This is added to by a kind of parochialism where folks go to (at the furthest) McMaster or Guelph or UWO for education and never leave the bosom of southern Ontario.This parochial sense of entitlement and grievance has been added to by a high-handed provincial government forcing the city amalgamation, and the reduction in the size of the city council.Torontonians are small-towners that don’t need to know what the next town over thinks. Because of that they’re surprised and offended when the next town over doesn’t like them.

I have lived in both cities. London as an undergrad, KW currently as a teacher. Both are fine cities. London has UWO and Fanshawe College. KW has Laurier U, Waterloo U and Conestoga College.If you have business or family in the Toronto area then KW has the advantage of proximity to TO. KW has a larger and growing high tech industry.London has less expensive housing and better housing availability. KW housing is getting crazy expensive (and hard to find something for sale let alone affordable) as it is in the Golden Horseshoe area around TO. Many people live here and travel into TO to work. Interestingly, more and more folks are living in TO and travelling here daily leading to increasing traffic problems.In effect there is little difference between Kitchener and Waterloo. It feels like one big city with two downtowns. I live in Kitchener two streets south of the Waterloo border. My kids went to elementary school in Waterloo. I work at various locations in both cities. Many public services are integrated. Both cities are undergoing massive development due to the newly opened ION light rail system that currently joins KW and will soon join to Cambridge. Condos are being built everywhere.Taxes are higher in Waterloo. The major Hospitals are in Kitchener. Kitchener has a larger tax base and is more populous. Waterloo is smaller and has the two universities and many student dwelling issues that they are dealing with. Both cities have high tech start ups growing like crazy and all areas of high tech are booming.Waterloo is a bit more expensive and likes to think of itself as a more exclusive area. Kitchener has more grand, older houses and neighbourhoods but also has a bit more homelessness evident. Both cities are changing and growing when other areas are not.
