PDF Editor FAQ

Why aren't there more women horse jockeys?

To be honest, horse racing is slowly digging itself out of a tradition of entrenched chauvinism that dominated the industry prior to the end of the last century. For instance, the British Jockey Club only allowed women to compete in races, at all, in 1972 - and racing bodies in other countries often operated similar restrictions until the late 60s and the 70s.Even after these bars were lifted, racing was still resistant to progress. Yards would often either not take on female apprentices, or put in discreet barriers like a lack of female facilities, to discourage applicants. Once they finished their apprenticeship, riders would struggle to find a trainer to employ them, or get any of the best horses to ride, once they were employed. It is telling that many of the pioneering female jockeys came from racing families, and grew up on racing yards, with the necessary connections to get the first step on their way.Things are improving, however, with figureheads like Hayley Turner prompting more and more young women to seek apprenticeships in recent years.

Why are racing horses given such odd names?

Sometimes it’s desperation! The name “Secretariat” was the sixth one submitted by owner Helen “Penny” Chenery when she was trying to register her chestnut colt. The first five—Royal Line, Scepter, Games of Chance, Deo Volente, and Something Special—were all rejected, almost certainly because they were already borne by other horses. The Jockey Club—a misnomer, since most of its members are CEOs, not jockeys—is the governing body of thoroughbred racing, and approves or rejects names. The process is easier now that the Jockey Club has a website where a name can be instantly approved or rejected (previously an owner had to mail in his or her applications). Names that were used previously but are free for re-use (because the former holder of the name is dead or long retired) are listed on the site, and I have a hunch that most of them are snapped up within days.As others have pointed out, a thoroughbred’s name cannot be more than 18 characters, including punctuation and spaces. American Pharoah’s sire is Pioneerof the Nile, so spelled because “Pioneer of the Nile” is 19 characters. The name cannot be that of a horse in the Racing Hall of Fame, which is why there will never be another Man o’War or Secretariat, nor can a close variation be used. Thus, not only is the name American Pharoah permanently retired, so is American Pharaoh.A horse’s name cannot be a vulgarism. If the name is in a foreign language, a translation must be provided as proof that the owner is not trying to slip a dirty word past the Jockey Club.If a horse is named after a living person, that person must give written permission for the use of his or her name. The champion 3-year-old filly of 1974 was named Chris Evert. Her owner didn’t have to go far to get the human Chris Evert’s permission, since he owned a line of sportswear that he was paying her to endorse. There used to be a rule that a horse’s name cannot be misleading as to gender; e.g., a male horse could not be called “Princess.” Since the champion three-year-old filly of 2017 was Abel Tasman, I don’t know if that rule still exists. All North American thoroughbreds must be registered with the Jockey Club, so it’s not possible to give the same name to a horse foaled in the United States and another horse foaled in Canada. European countries have their own equivalent of the North American Jockey Club, so it’s possible for the same name to be given to different horses on each continent. In 1965 the beaten favorite for the Kentucky Derby was Bold Lad, a son of Bold Ruler (sire of Secretariat). A year or so later, a son of Bold Ruler was registered in England and also named Bold Lad. Had the latter been brought to the United States for racing or breeding, he would have been called Bold Lad II to distinguish him from his American half-brother.

What can you do with $500 to make a lot of money in the shortest time?

Find a student who has mobile application development expertise and pay him 500$ to solve a problem for you in the form of an app, and then let people pay for the service. I think this is the least time consuming option after horse races.

People Trust Us

I have worked with CocoDoc for a long time, mostly on the "customer" side of the interactions. I have signed various legal agreements using this software, and always found it very easy to navigate though all the sections of the document, as the software directs you to all the locations where your mark needs to be made, and then gives you access to your signed documents in a variety of ways. Overall very easy to use.
