Turkey is always blamed for this, however a close examination of the early 20th century nationhood creation finds this phenomenon in many places in Europe, the Middle East, Caucasus, Asia etc. In fact, the very people that normally blame Turks for changing names, were the ones practicing the same thing at home at a more rigorous pace (remember, just one city in Armenia - the old Turkic Gümrü became Alexandrapol then Leninakan, then back to Kumayri, then became Gyumri again, Armenian pronounciation of Gümrü).The truth is that name changes occur every time a new nation state is declared anywhere in the world or when new territories are acquired (German Königsberg bacame Soviet Russian Kaliningrad after WWII). Name changing practiced by humans most likely can be traced back to the cavemen as a way to ‘mark my territory’. It is nothing new in human history and there is nothing particularly Turkish about it. Nonetheless, there are few reasons for name changes in Turkey and they did not occur at the scale some ethno-nationalists of the opposite camp would like to believe (after all Van is still called Van and Istanbul was really the Greek nickname of the city since the middle ages). But the main reason for name changes were the following:Breaking away from the old Ottoman pastCreation of a Turkish ethno-nationalist secular republic with its new borders, administrative unites and new governing systemsAfter the collapsed of the Ottoman Empire and massive loss of territories, the new republic had to reorganize. The old sanjak system, the administrative divisions utilized by the Ottomans was obsolete. Some sanjaks found themselves being split in half - the new halves now part of completely different nation states. So new administrative divisions fitting the new borders of the Turkish Republic were introduced. Along this came the new names that were more fitting to the republic and had less of an association with the Ottoman past. Turkey was declared as a ethno-national republic, aka a nation state for Turks. Hence, the new place names had to be either republican or Turkic or at least be pronounced in a Turkish way (Izmir is the Turkish way of saying Smyrna). Names that were monarchic, or Ottoman, or were reminders of Ottoman multiculturalism, the millet system had to be erased and replaced - the old Greek and Armenian names were part of the Ottoman past, majority had to go. Diversity became something associated with Ottomanism and the Anatolian Greeks and Armenians were the last of the Ottomans.Bottom line, the reason why the Turkish Republic changed the names is the same reason the newly established Armenian Republic changed its city and town names from Turkic to Armenian. Same reason why Hamamli became Spitak, Karvansaray became Ijevan, why Basarkecer became Vardenis, why Barana (actualy an ancient Armenian name) became Noyemberyan, why Karakilise became Kirovakan during USSR then Vanadzor after 1991 independence and why many other small villages lost their Turkic and Persian names and acquired completely new Armenian names, names that never existed before, names that were simply new made up names. The same name changing occurred in other nearby ethno-national states as a result of their respective ethno-national state building.
