PDF Editor FAQ

I’m a convicted felon. Could I join the army (Marines)?

Question: I’m a convicted felon. Could I join the army (Marines)?First things first: The US Army and US Marine Corps are two entirely different branches of the military. And no, you cannot join either one. The Department of Defense will not allow ex-felons to enlist for military service.NOTE: The Department of Defense DID offer “moral waivers” for ex-felon enlistees during a low point in recruiting from 2003 until 2009. However, the terms were so stringent that the majority of applicants were not allowed to enlist and many of those who did were unable to meet the terms of their enlistment.

How do illegal immigrants get to join the army, etc. in the USA?

‘Illegal immigrants’ cannot join the US armed forces. Any applicant must already be either a citizen or a legal permanent resident.

Is the British Army training intense like the USA training, and do you get shouted out the moment you arrive like the US Army?

Can’t add anything to the excellent answers given already. Yes there is a difference, but it might be worth thinking about why the Americans are like that.(and I think this is the main reason) at key periods in its history the US Army has had to deal with a substantially worse type of recruit than the British and this has seriously influenced their training style. One of the worst periods was when they moved from a national service army to an all volunteer force in the early seventies. Some of the trained soldiers in this period were dreadful, so you can imagine what the recruits must have been like. You would have to go back to the 18th century to find a period when ours were as bad, and the British Army at that time had flogging, branding, running the gauntlet and penal battalions - options denied to the modern US ArmyUS Army officers are noticeably more careerist than British ones and attach less importance to Regimental service with troops. This means more responsibility attaches to NCO’s for maintainance of standardsUS Army officers are themselves subjected to a ferocious training regime. Several senior (and tough) British Officers have been very critical of this at West Point (“inhuman discipline”, “more suited to a prison”) and the Citadel is worse. Presumably they regard this as normal so view the other ranks training as perhaps even sedateDespite the iron discipline in training US troops have always been more difficult to manage than those of many other countries which perhaps points to its necessity.Personally I think the type of recruit is the clincher. Training in the old Indian Army was reputed to be less harsh in tone than the British, but then in some Regiments there were 300 applicants for each position and the men drilled each other in their spare time and the harshest punishment would be someone telling your parents you were no good (men who failed the training often did not go back to their village).
