PDF Editor FAQ

What are some common assumptions/misconceptions people have about your profession?

I’m a teacher. People think I teach.Ha!About 50% of my job is teaching. Tops. The other 50% is administrative work. Things like calling parents, going to IEP meetings, grading, staff meetings, making copies, professional development, and of course, planning lessons. I’ve been doing this job for 20 years now, and you might think I’d be pretty much done with planning. But alas, no. The students keep changing on me, and so does the subject matter I’m asked to teach. And so it’s fresh to the drawing board anew every year. Here’s something to make you scratch your head: should I give participation points next year and, if so, how should they be allotted?I’ve spent weeks contemplating this one, and I’m no closer to an answer. I’ve had years with no participation points, and years where I’ve assigned it in a variety of ways. Which works best? None of them. All of them. Who knows? I don’t. It’s very taxing! The teaching part is easy. It’s the rest that keeps me up nights.

What are the disadvantages of working at Google?

We were essentially rewarded for either dreaming up totally new wildly innovative things, or improving existing things with hard metrics. This lead to imaginative unmaintained nightmares, frequently based on discarded shells of other platforms nobody maintained. We had four internal-only official javascript libraries. Why? Because writing an innovative javascript library could get you a promotion! My product was built on a bastardized version of what one day became Google App Engine (GAE). It worked sort of like GAE, except without a lot of stuff implemented, and nobody was maintaining it at all.It also meant that many other things were maintained longer than they should have been. You could campaign to have the whole system rewritten, or you could get a bonus this quarter for twirling up some side metric that didn't matter a whole lot. What would you do?This also meant that any improvement not based on a hard metric was flatly not a respected use of time. Usability? Number of bugs? Nobody cared. If you couldn't measure it, nobody was interested in it.Server provisioning was terrible. You were suppose to have your stuff in enough zones that you could withstand a planned outage, but people were often lucky to get it up in one. Then they get mad at you when you need to take it down for maintenance. There was a very clear policy saying have it in more than one zone, but a lot of the little projects couldn't get the resources. And, as Keval mentioned as well, people feel justified asking you why you left or if you still work there, insist that everything must be perfect. They don't want to hear anything less than total enthusiasm for your luck getting into Google, and how much you want to stay. If you left or have anything other than rainbows and ponies to talk about, nearly everybody from my mother to my cab driver pretty much demands you explain why you'd be anything less than thrilled to work at Google. I think that's the marketing campaign that employees at Google have everything they could ever need to be happy is one of Google's most impressive products, when in reality, their perks are not unusual for a company of its size in Silicon Valley at all, and the majority of the features are replicated in the smaller companies too. [2018 edit: while a warm lunch remains fairly easy to find most anywhere, Google’s healthcare is phenomenal and something too many companies here skimp on. Google was my first industry job, so it was easy to see their shortcomings, including on health issues. However, as the years have passed I have realized more and more how horrendously most employers here skimp on healthcare. I commend Google for all of the places it has bucked this trend. On a great many health issues, they really put their money where their mouth. On a great many health issues, they really do take care of their employees in the ways which matter most.]You watch many of your coworkers get weird and dependent at Google, and realize the Google lifestyle has made them basically unemployable anywhere else. You secretly start wondering if you could cut it on the outside too.

How is the life of a Grade B officer in DEPR different from that of a General Grade B officer at RBI?

I presume the question refers to the nature of work, rather than life style of different cadres in RBI, which is same. Having said that, here is a small description of work profiles of DEPR and General Cadre Grade B/C officers:First, the General Cadre:Since RBI has several functions, ranging from Banking/non-banking regulation and supervision to financial markets regulation to currency issue etc., the nature of work of a General Cadre officer varies widely depending on the department (s)he is posted. It also varies quite significantly between a regional office posting and central office posting. The main difference between the regional office vs central office posting is that in regional office, the emphasis is more on “operational” aspect, while in Central Office, the emphasis is more on “policy” and “analysis” aspects. Now, if we assume that one is posted in a regional office, say, in Banking Department, then the nature of work could include maintaining accounts of commercial banks, doing/authorising certain transactions (inter-bank), maintaining state government debt accounts, etc. In Issue department, the nature of work is mostly on ensuring currency distribution, maintaining accounts of currency distributed, implementing clean note policy, etc. On the other hand, if one is posted in supervisory departments (such as Banking Supervision/Non-Banking Supervision/Co-operative Bank supervision, etc), the work profile largely deals with inspection of the financial entities supervised by the respective departments. Then in Financial Inclusion and Development Department, the nature of work is more geared towards monitoring Priority Sector Loans targets and compliance, monitoring Annual Credit Plans of Banks, and Financial Inclusion related work, etc. In addition, there are “support services”, like establishment, estate, human resources, information technology, etc., where the nature of work relates to doing operational transactions internal operations of RBI, or, providing IT support (purchase of hardware, implementation of software, etc).Central office has lot more departments than a typical regional office, though for each regional office department, there is a corresponding central office department. Rather, for some central office departments, there is a corresponding regional office department. In central office, the nature of work can be broadly divided into regulation, supervision, markets, and support services streams. Here, regulation focuses more on analysing various regulatory issues, emerging developments, etc., and suggesting policy to meet the emerging challenges/requirements. Supervision focus is more on ensuring that the regulatory policies issued by RBI are implemented appropriately by the regulated entities (banks, non-banks, etc). Markets focus is more on regulation of financial markets, while there some departments also “operate” in financial markets (both domestic and ineternational), with a view to managing domestic public debt, managing RBI (India’s) forex reserves, etc. The support services departments frame and implement internal policies (like HR, budget, IT, etc). Nevertheless, please note that this classification is a broad one, and doesn’t cover some important departments like Payments and Settlement Systems (which formulates policies for payments and settlement systems), and Secretary’s Department, etc.In addition to the above “general side departments”, there are also several “specialist” departments in the central office. These include, among others, the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR), Department of Statistics and Information Management, Legal Department, Rajbhasha, Security, Premises, etc. All these departments carry out some specialised functions, though they do interact and work together with other departments. Now, for DEPR: The primary nature of work of this cadre is to carry out research and analysis on various macroeconomic aspects of Indian (and also international) economy. The work involves a large amount of data analysis using statistical techniques (econometrics), data compilation, contributing to RBI’s regular publications (including annual report, monetary policy report), etc. The focus of work is more towards carrying out research/analysis with a monetary policy focus. Here, the work is broadly divided into real economy (agriculture, industry, services), fiscal, monetary policy and banking, and international economy. These sectors have corresponding operational departments as well, and there is regular interaction with these operational departments and DEPR officers on matters of policy issues, etc. In addition, DEPR officers can also get placed in sister departments like Monetary Policy Department, International Department, and also other supervisory/regulatory departments as well. But in supervisory/regulatory departments, the number of DEPR officers placed is quite small. Sometimes, regional office placements are also possible for DEPR officers as usually there is one DEPR officer in most regional offices. In regional offices, the work of DEPR officer will be to support the work of other departments through analysis, and also carryout research/analysis on regional economic issues, or as directed by central office. So overall, the work profile depends largely on placement. As one goes up in the organisational hierarchy, the nature of work between general/special cadre merges gradually, and tends more towards analysis/suggesting policy options, etc.I hope this helps.
