When faculty hire postdocs, they are usually very strategic about it. Besides the research area which is advertised openly, there is a hidden agenda which is not obvious in the advertisement. An early career faculty might hire a postdoc to get his/her research lab off the ground while she/he works on writing grants. A mid-career faculty might be exactly opposite, she/he has a lot of grant money but needs a post doc to manage the day-to-day activities of the different projects. A faculty who is also an administrator might want to hire a post doc to run his/her lab like a research faculty.Thus, to stand out, your application should not only address how you fit in the advertised research area but subtly mention how you fit the hidden agenda. Sometimes it is easy to guess what the hidden agenda is, but sometimes it is not. In the latter case, you could just ask the PI by emailing (e.g., I know that you are seeking a postdoc for your lab, are there any other specific duties/responsibilities that you want the postdoc to do). Trust me, the PI’s would not mind sharing this information, and sometimes this may work out in your favor; you will standout because you asked.Here are some other thoughts to make the application stand out:Strive to do things which make your application stand out visually. For example, including relevant photos/figures/plots (but not too many) with very descriptive captions that explain your research.Write for the technical audience, but not necessarily the person who is an expert in the field. Keep the writeup short and relevant. My recipe is something like this: a high level view of the research problem, zoom in a bit into the specific part of the research problem that you are addressing, explain the gap in knowledge, and show how your research fills this gap.Emphasize what you can get to the table from your expertise/experiences that helps the PI hiring you rather than emphasizing how the post-doc will help you in your career.A well formatted curriculum vitae including downloadable research papers, cover letter, research statement, etc.Original question: PIs, when you are hiring postdocs, what could make a postdoc's application stand out and make you want to interview them?
