The term "angel" came from the Broadway theatre, when wealthy individuals gave money to help launch theatrical productions. The term "angel investor" was first used in 1978 by the University of New Hampshire's William Wetzel, founder of the Center for Venture Research. Wetzel completed a study on how entrepreneurs gathered capital.Presumably when he coined the term “Angel” he was reflecting on the deliverance quality ascribed to Angels. An angel investor can save the founder/business from (corporate) death…..by writing a cheque.

Well, like anything, I think you mostly get out what YOU put in. When my parents were paying for my tuition and room and board at the Durham campus, I was more interested in applying myself to “extra-curricular” activities. Later, when I was paying for everything myself, I got much higher grades.There were things the school could have done better in some instances: hire actual professors instead of TAs to teach the introductory level classes; order enough text books for each class; encourage students to form study groups.My education at UNH was split between the Durham campus and the Manchester campus. I also studied for a year in Oregon, so my four year degree was a patchwork quilt comprised of five full-time years of schooling.A few conclusions I came to about my college journey:I much preferred the smaller class sizes at UNH Manchester.I like being taught by professors.For undergraduate, a small school was a better fit for me.Alcohol is a poor advisor.I currently have a son getting his PhD in Econ. He chose a very large school. I’ve heard that’s kind of a rule of thumb… the bigger schools will have more choice for your graduate level studies, if you choose to go in that direction.Another thing to consider is cost. UNH has the second highest tuition in the United States for a state university system. Is it that much better than other state schools? Probably not. This extra cost is more a function of New Hampshire’s insistence on remaining the only state with neither a broad-based sales tax nor an income tax. Which is great so long as you never: go out to eat, stay in a hotel, register a new car, drive on the interstate, own property, or go to college.Finally, it depends what you want to study. If you want to go into business, I can tell you that you will learn more by just starting a business, or working for someone who has a business similar to the one you would like to start. Learn by doing. Formal education is great, but it is expensive, and not always what you need. Do you want to write? Create art? Just do it. If, on the other hand, you want to be an engineer or a doctor, then by all means matriculate.
