The astronaut requirements do not include a high school diploma, but they do require a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. Some good answers. Look at it this way: the AF has many, many technical and scientific jobs. There are people who join the AF and would not join another branch because AF has a better quality of life. These people might not have joined any military branch as they could easily find a technical job in civilian life, but the AF offers them a chance to serve their country while making it as appealing as possible to be in the military. Having more perks and nice base facilities helps with that. Now the non tech jobs also needs to be filled, so again nice perks can make it more appealing to enlist for cooks, security police, administrative workers as well…
